Chapter 1 – The Lonely Bookworm

“Francine, you stupid fool! Did you honestly believe you could defeat me?” Sasha Monroe screamed, pointing her glowing weapon at the wounded woman as alien warships filled the blood-red sky. Behind them, thousands of zombies flooded the ruined streets, while the system displayed a warning that humanity's final shelter would fall within minutes.

“Sasha, you betrayed humanity! You stole our supplies, abandoned our soldiers, and sold our location to the aliens!” Francine Lopez shouted, her hands glowing with the golden light of her Champion System. “How many innocent people must die before your greed is satisfied?”

“Everyone who stands in my way deserves to die!” Sasha laughed cruelly, raising her weapon. “The aliens promised me eternal power, and I gladly accepted! Once I eliminate you, nobody will ever challenge me again!”

Daryl Anderson stepped forward, blood dripping from his forehead. “You monster! We trusted you with our lives, and you repaid us by feeding our friends to those creatures!”

“Save your pathetic speeches!” Sasha fired, releasing a powerful blast that shattered the ground beneath them. However, Francine activated her ultimate skill, creating a golden shield that reflected the attack straight toward Sasha.

“No! My system, activate my emergency escape!” Sasha screamed, but a red notification appeared before her eyes.

[WARNING: Host has betrayed humanity. All abilities revoked.]

“What? No! You cannot abandon me!” Sasha cried as the alien creatures turned against her. Francine watched with cold eyes while Sasha fell from the shattered tower, swallowed by the darkness below.

“Your reign of terror ends today,” Francine whispered as the system announced Sasha Monroe's death.

Sandra Johnson sighed while reading the final chapter of her favorite apocalypse novel in the university library. She shook her head in disappointment, wondering why Sasha had chosen betrayal when she possessed a powerful system that could have helped humanity survive the zombie outbreak and alien invasion.

“Such an idiot,” Sandra muttered, closing the book. “If I had her system, I would save everyone instead of becoming the villain.”

Suddenly, someone snatched the book from her hands.

“Still reading this stupid thing, Sandra?” Vanessa Cole asked, holding the novel between her fingers as if it were dirty.

The rich and beautiful university student looked at Sandra with disgust, while Bianca Reyes stood beside her with a mocking smile and Mark Davis shoved a chair away from the table.

“Give it back, Vanessa. I'm still reading,” Sandra said quietly, reaching for her book.

Bianca laughed and pulled out a chair. “Come on, Vanessa, don't waste your time talking to her. She's just a fat, boring bookworm who probably thinks fictional men will fall in love with her.”

“Hey, loser, we're sitting here,” Mark added, pointing toward the door. “Get out and find somewhere else to hide. My family practically owns this university, so don't even think about complaining to anyone.”

“But this is the library,” Sandra whispered, her fingers tightening around the edge of the table.

“And?” Vanessa sneered, dropping the book onto Sandra's chest. “Did you suddenly become important? Move before I make sure you regret coming here.”

Sandra lowered her head, picked up her novel, and quietly gathered her belongings while the three students laughed behind her. She wanted to defend herself, but the words remained trapped in her throat because she knew nobody would take her side.

As she walked away, Sandra glanced at the cover of The Last Dawn: Rise of the Chosen Survivor and remembered Francine Lopez, the heroine who was loved, admired, and respected by everyone.

Why couldn't I be someone like her? Sandra thought sadly. In that world, people fight to protect Francine, but in this world, nobody would even notice if I disappeared.

Sandra walked home hoping that at least her house would give her some peace. However, when she opened the front door, she heard her parents laughing happily in the dining room, where her younger sister, Sophie, sat enjoying a table full of delicious food.

“Sweetheart, you did an amazing job on your examination!” her mother praised, placing another piece of chicken on Sophie's plate. “Your grades are the highest in your class, and your professors keep telling us how talented you are.”

Her father smiled proudly. “That's my girl! I always knew you would become someone important. One day, you'll get a good job, earn a lot of money, and give this family a better life.”

Sophie smiled sweetly, enjoying their attention. “Don't worry, Mom and Dad. I'll work hard and make sure you never have to struggle with money again. I'll buy you a beautiful house and give you everything you deserve.”

“Oh, Sophie, we're so lucky to have you!” her mother exclaimed, hugging her daughter. Her father joined them, wrapping his arms around Sophie as they laughed together.

Sandra stood silently at the doorway, watching the scene with a familiar ache in her heart. She had dreamed of receiving that kind of love since childhood, but whenever she tried to make her parents proud, they only found another reason to criticize her.

“I'm home,” Sandra greeted softly.

Her parents turned toward her, and their happy expressions immediately disappeared.

“Why are you standing there?” her mother asked with a frown. “Go wash your hands and sit down. Don't just stand around like you have nothing better to do.”

Sandra lowered her eyes. “Yes, Mom.”

She sat at the table and quietly began eating, hoping nobody would notice her presence. Unfortunately, her father soon glanced at her plate and shook his head in disappointment.

“Sandra, look at your sister,” he said. “She's intelligent, hardworking, and knows how to take care of herself. Why can't you learn something from her instead of wasting your time reading those useless novels?”

“Your father is right,” her mother added. “You're already old enough to understand our situation. We're poor, and we cannot afford to carry someone who has no future. At least Sophie knows how to make us proud.”

“I'm trying my best,” Sandra whispered.

“Trying?” her father scoffed. “Where are the results? Your sister gets excellent grades, while you spend your days hiding behind books. Do you think those fictional stories will feed you when we're gone?”

Sophie covered her mouth as she laughed softly. “Mom, Dad, don't worry about me. I'll take care of everything. Unlike some people, I know how to build a good future.”

Her mother reached over and squeezed Sophie's hand. “We love you so much, sweetheart. You're our greatest blessing.”

Those words hurt more than any insult Sandra had received at university. She stared at her food, struggling to hold back the tears gathering in her eyes, while her parents continued praising Sophie as if Sandra did not exist.

Sandra had spent her entire life believing she was a loser. She was overweight, ordinary, and far from being a genius, while society considered her unattractive and unworthy of attention. Their family struggled with money, but instead of treating her like a daughter, her parents made her feel like an unwanted burden. Sophie, beautiful and intelligent, was the child they believed would rescue them from poverty.

“I'm finished,” Sandra murmured, pushing her chair back.

She carried her plate to the kitchen and washed it before walking toward her small bedroom. Nobody asked where she was going, and nobody called her back. Their laughter continued behind her, making her feel as though she were living in a house where she had never truly belonged.

Once inside her room, Sandra closed the door and finally allowed herself to cry. She hugged her apocalypse novel against her chest, wiping her tears with the sleeve of her shirt as she stared at Francine Lopez's beautiful face on the cover.

“At least you have people who care about you,” she whispered. “You have friends, power, and a future. Nobody loves me, Francine, but I wish I could live in your world, even if it meant facing the apocalypse.”
