I silently pulled myself up from the ground, enduring the stabbing pain in my leg as I limped away one step at a time.

I hadn't gone far when I heard Hunter speaking tenderly to Scarlett behind me, "Scarlett, don't come outside. Stay in the house where it's safe."

"But Olivia left," Scarlett replied, her voice carrying a calculated tremor. "Is it because I came back and stole the brothers' affection? That's why she's leaving so determinedly? But I finally reunited with my brothers after so long... why can't she just let me have this?"

"It's not your fault," Hunter responded immediately. "Olivia is just too petty."

"Then can we decorate the house in red? That's my favorite color," Scarlett asked sweetly.

"Of course we can," Ethan and Mason called out in unison as they followed Hunter outside.

"And those paintings on the walls... can I replace all those things?" Scarlett pressed, her voice growing bolder. "I hate those things so much. They're ugly and tasteless. "

All three brothers agreed without hesitation, not a moment's doubt in their voices.

Red had once been the color we all hated most because it reminded us of blood—of the day we lost our parents. Those decorations she called " tasteless " were items I had carefully chosen for our home.

While my brothers were busy with pack duties and rarely home, I had spent countless hours trying to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere in the place we shared.

The physical pain combined with this emotional betrayal made me dizzy. I struggled to stay upright, fighting not to collapse, when a strong hand suddenly steadied me.

I looked up with effort, taking a moment to recognize Derek, the pack's most formidable warrior. He had also signed up for the secret enhancement mission.

Without a word, he took my luggage from my hands and placed it in the trunk of his car. Mason laughed coldly behind me.

"Is this your mate?" he sneered. "Are you planning to bond with him? Is that why you're leaving home, because you met some wild man from outside? We raised you since you were a child—are we really less important than this stranger?"

Derek looked at my wretched state and angrily defended me:

"What kind of brothers are they? Why do you still recognize them as such? Your parents sacrificed themselves to save them, and this is how they treat you. That Scarlett, she's not even—"

"We're leaving in a few days anyway..."

I hastily cut him off in panic: "Master Derek!"

Derek finally fell silent.

He opened the car door and forcefully ushered me inside.

From the corner of my eye, I saw Mason's face darken instantly:

"Derek, what are you implying?"

Derek looked at him with disgust and scoffed: "What am I implying? In a few days, you'll know."

My heart suddenly jumped to my throat.

Mason stood frozen in place, as if stunned.

After a while, as the car was about to leave, he rushed forward, trying to open my door.

Derek had already gotten in and swiftly locked the car.

Through the window and the curtain of rain, I could only vaguely make out Mason's lips forming the words:

"Olivia, get out of the car!"

His expression was furious, yet seemed to be mixed with other strange emotions.

I couldn't understand it. I only knew that, by now, my departure was probably of little importance to the Paine family.

I closed my eyes, no longer looking at him.

As the car drove away, the rearview mirror showed Mason still standing there.

Derek continued to rage: "They took your healing gem and then threw you out in the pouring rain. I really don't understand why you came back to suffer this abuse."

I turned my head to look out the window at the torrential rain.

After a long silence, I spoke softly: "They used to be very good to me."

Derek didn't believe it.

He had only met me after I joined the Beta Wolf Enhancement program and had never seen the Paine family treat me well.

My eyes misted over, and I seriously repeated: "Really. They used to be very good to me."

I remembered that heavy snowfall from so long ago, the day my parents died. The not-yet-twenty-year-old Mason who had held me tightly against his chest, his own tears falling into my hair as he promised me I wasn't alone."As long as your brothers are here, Olivia, you'll always have a home."Years of memories, looking back, seemed like nothing but a distant dream—the good ones and the painful ones alike."I remember," I said softly, not even sure if he could hear me. "I remember when you three took me sledding at Wolf Ridge. And how you threatened Tommy Walker when he pushed me down at school."Mason's eyes filled with tears. He tried to nod."I remember how you read to me when I was scared during thunderstorms," I continued, the words coming unbidden now. "And how you taught me to drive, even though I crashed your new car into that fence."His face was ashen gray now, his breathing becoming increasingly labored. The nurse hovered nearby, clearly concerned by the numbers on the monito

As I straightened up, I glanced out the window and saw Mason, Ethan, and Hunter had stopped walking and turned back toward the house. They were just close enough to see me placing their gifts on the ground.Even from a distance, I could read their expressions—identical looks of sorrow and dismay crossed their faces before they quickly turned away, continuing their slow retreat.Hours later, as Derek and I were preparing for bed, the phone rang. It was nearly midnight—too late for casual calls.I answered, a sense of foreboding already settling in my stomach."Mrs. Blackwood?" an unfamiliar voice asked. "This is Crescent Moon Hospital. I'm calling about Mason Paine."My hand tightened around the receiver. "What about him?""He's been admitted in critical condition. His brothers asked us to contact you." The nurse's voice softened. "The doctors don't expect him to make it through the night. They wanted to know if you wished to see him one last time."I ended up rushing to the hospital, t

At thirty-seven, Derek and I became mates after years of working side by side in the research institute. Derek had always been protective of me, even more so after we mated. When we discussed having children, his brow furrowed with concern."Olivia, werewolf pregnancies are risky even for younger females," he said one night. "I can't risk losing you. I've watched you nearly die too many times during our missions."His eyes, usually so confident, held a vulnerability I rarely saw. I knew he was remembering the time a rogue wolf had nearly torn out my throat during a weapons test gone wrong."We have other options," I told him, squeezing his hand reassuringly. We visited several pack orphanages before we found her—a tiny newborn with silver-blonde hair and bright green eyes. "She's the one," he whispered. We named her Lily. When Lily turned three, I organized a birthday celebration. Nothing extravagant—just a gathering with other pack children, some fellow researchers, and Derek's fami

How long had it been since my brothers called me "Liv"?I couldn't remember. The people accompanying me saw the situation and left first.Derek gently patted my shoulder: "Olivia, I'll wait for you outside."I nodded.Turning around, I saw Mason, Ethan, and Hunter hastily walking toward me.At about two steps away, they seemed afraid to come any closer and stopped.I looked at them, followed by a long silence.Until Hunter spoke hoarsely: "Have you been well all these years?"I replied gently: "I've been quite well."Ethan struggled to contain himself, his eyes revealing immense pain and regret:"About Scarlett, we know everything now."Olivia, your brothers... we're sorry."My heart no longer stirred with ripples of emotion.I just calmly said: "It's okay. It's all in the past."Mason's face trembled. After a while, he carefully asked: "Could we... have a meal together?"I shook my head: "I'd rather not."The hope in their eyes instantly dimmed.I didn't linger any longer and turned t

I left the research institute twelve years later. The Beta Wolf Enhancement program development was a complete success, with many Beta level warriors suppressing the rogue wolves who had waged war so recklessly. That day, I attended the release conference with my fellow researchers and mentors. Many werewolves came to the venue voluntarily, emotional and tearful with gratitude. That day also happened to be the anniversary of my parents' sacrifice. Now, my efforts could help stop wars and bring peace.Perhaps in the underworld, my parents could finally rest in peace?I accepted the flowers from the werewolves and interviews from the swarming reporters. In the crowded scene, my gaze suddenly collided with a familiar pair of eyes.Across the surging crowd, I abruptly saw Mason in the distance, with Ethan and Hunter accompanying him. After twelve years without seeing them, they had begun to age, just like me.They were all over forty now.Ethan had fine lines around his eyes, and Hunter's

Mason spoke in a daze: "There must be a way."I'll think of something, think of something. I must be able to find her."The director sighed softly: "Forgive my bluntness."Rogue wolves frequently attack various packs, causing massive casualties. This Beta Wolf Enhancement research is extremely important."Security cannot be compromised, which would give rogue wolves an opportunity to strike."This time, until the research is complete, no outsider will be able to find them."Mason, as if his soul had departed, stubbornly replied: "I will find a way."The director couldn't help but remind him: "If you make a big show of searching for Olivia, you might bring danger to her."Alpha, don't forget her parents died saving you."If you truly care about Olivia... respect her choice."Mason's pupils trembled violently. The heavy snow in the deep night had frozen the vast northern city into a silver-white world. It seemed to have thoroughly frozen him as well.He stood motionless, even his fingert
