Chapter 2: The Wrong Crest

"Stand down, healer. We're not here for you."

The man who stepped through the ruined doorway wore no helm, only a leather gorget stamped with the crowned wolf, and he said the words like they were meant to be a kindness.

Behind him, two more men filled the frame, swords still sheathed but hands resting on the hilts in a way that made the threat plain enough without needing steel drawn.

"You're standing in my house," Wren said, "with my door in pieces on my floor.

Forgive me if I don't take that as reassurance."

"We were told there were children here matching a description the House of Vaelith has interest in."

The lead man's eyes moved past her, to where Ashe and Elowen stood pressed against the far wall, Mira half a step in front of them. "

That interest doesn't have to end badly for anyone tonight. Hand them over quietly, and you keep your life. Fight us, and we take them anyway, and you simply won't be alive to see it."

"That's not an offer," Mira snapped. "That's a threat dressed up in manners."

"Call it what you like."

"I'll call it exactly what it is." Wren's voice didn't shake, though everything underneath it did.

"You came to a healer's house at night with drawn steel to threaten children.

There's no version of that where you leave here believing yourselves the reasonable ones."

"Reasonable has nothing to do with it."

The man took another step inside, and Wren felt Mira's hand close hard around her wrist, a silent warning not to move first.

"Lord Vaelith doesn't care how this goes. Only that it goes. The crown's succession law says pure blood or nothing, and if the crown can't produce an heir of its own,

Lord Vaelith intends to make sure no one else does either."

Elowen's breath caught audibly behind them.

"You're not here to take us," she said, and her voice, for a child's, came out steadier than anyone in the room expected. "You're here to kill us."

The man didn't deny it.

"Get behind me," Wren said, and this time there was no room in her tone for argument. "Both of you. Now."

"Mom, you can't, "

"I said now, Ashe."

The twins moved. Mira moved with them, putting her own body between the children and the door, satchel dropped, one hand already closing around the small belt knife she carried for cutting bandages and never, in eleven years as a healer, for anything like this.

"Last chance to make this simple," the lead man said.

"You first," Wren answered, and shifted.

It happened fast, faster than the men expected, judging by the way the closest one's sword only cleared half its sheath before Wren was already across the room, wolf shape unfolding around her like something the kitchen had been too small to contain until that exact moment.

She hit him hard enough to put him through

the table Ashe had been sitting at an hour earlier, splinters and root vegetables, scattering across the floorboards.

The second man drew fully and lunged for Mira instead, correctly guessing she was the easier target  and was wrong.

Mira sidestepped, drove her knife into the meat of his forearm with the same clinical precision she used lancing an infected wound, and shoved him backward into the doorframe hard enough to buy herself three full seconds she didn't waste.

"Elowen! the window, now, go!" Mira shouted.

"Not without Mom!"

"Your mother can handle herself better than either of us right now, move!"

The third man never made it past the threshold. A shape came out of the dark behind him, not wolf, not Vaelith colors, but a man in the crown's own leathers, blade already drawn, moving with the kind of economy that spoke of years spent doing exactly this.

He put the third raider down with a single strike to the back of the knee and a follow through that ended the fight before it started.

Wren, mid shift back to two legs, went rigid at the sight of him.

"Callum."

"You know this one?" Mira's voice was somewhere between relief and fresh suspicion, knife still raised.

"He's the crown's man," Wren said, eyes narrowing. "Which begs the question of why he's here at all, since the crown wasn't supposed to know where 'here' is yet."

"We weren't the only ones tracking you," Callum said grimly, stepping over the fallen raider without so much as glancing down at him.

"Vaelith's had eyes on the border villages for weeks, longer than we have.

I only found out tonight, when one of my own scouts recognized their riders heading this way and I rode ahead of the prince's party to warn you."

"Warn us." Wren's laugh had no humor in it. "You're a little late for that, Captain."

"I'm aware." His jaw tightened. "I also didn't expect to find you handling three armed men on your own before I got here."

"We manage," Wren said, "when we have to."

Ashe, still pressed against the wall with his sister, found his voice again. "Is he safe? Is he one of the good ones?"

Callum's eyes moved to the boy, and something in his expression shifted, just slightly, the look of a man seeing a resemblance he'd been warned about and still wasn't prepared for.

"I don't know if 'good' is the word anyone in this, deserves tonight," he said. "But I'm not here to hurt either of you. That much I can promise."

"Promises from crown men aren't worth much in this house," Mira muttered, finally lowering her knife but not sheathing her suspicion.

"No," Callum agreed. "I understand why you'd think that."

"Do you?" Wren stepped closer, close enough that he had to hold his ground or visibly retreat from her, and he chose to hold it.

"Because from where I'm standing, a crown captain showing up moments after Vaelith men broke down my door looks less like rescue and more like convenient timing."

"I rode two days without sleep to reach you before either of those men did,"

Callum said. "If you think I orchestrated that fight to earn your trust, you're welcome to ask the one bleeding on your floor whether it felt staged."

"Maybe you let them get here first on

purpose," Mira cut in. "Soften her up.

Make the rescue look sweeter."

"I've spent eight years keeping a secret that wasn't mine to keep," Callum said, and something raw slipped into his voice for the first time.

"I'm not interested in playing games with what's left of the damage. I came to warn you. I'm still here to warn you. Believe whatever you need to about my reasons, but don't waste the minutes we don't have arguing about them."

Wren straightened, wiping blood that wasn't hers from her hands, and fixed Callum with a look sharp enough to cut.

"How many more are coming? Vaelith's men, or yours? I want a number, Captain, not a comforting guess."

"Vaelith sent a full raiding party, I count seven still unaccounted for beyond these three, moving in from the eastern road.

My own men are two hours behind me at best; I rode ahead alone once I realized the timing."

Callum's gaze flicked toward the broken door, toward the dark beyond it. "And the prince isn't far behind them. A day, maybe less."

"The prince." Wren's stomach turned over at the words, old wounds surfacing faster than she had the strength to bury them again tonight.

"Theron is coming here."

"He's been searching for you for longer than you know," Callum said. "Longer than even he remembers, if I'm honest, there are things about that search I haven't been able to explain to him yet. Things I should have told him years ago."

"What things?" Wren's voice sharpened.

Before Callum could answer, a horn sounded somewhere beyond the tree line, long, low, unmistakably a signal rather than an accident.

Callum's head turned toward it instantly, every line of his body going taut.

"That's not one of mine," he said quietly.

"Then whose is it?"

"I don't know. But Vaelith wouldn't signal their own position unless," He stopped himself, eyes widening with the shape of a realization he clearly didn't want to say out loud.

"Unless what?" Wren demanded.

"Unless they already have what they came for, and they're calling the rest of the party off," Callum said. "Which means either they think they've already taken the children"

He looked at Ashe and Elowen, both still very much standing in the ruined kitchen.

“or someone else in this village has children who look enough like them to be mistaken in the dark."

The color drained from Wren's face as the same thought landed in all of them at once.

"Mira," she said, already moving toward the door. "The Hollis twins. They're staying two houses down while their mother's away at the healer's exchange in"

The horn sounded again, closer this time, followed by a scream that carried clear across the village green.

Chapter 5: Eyes Across the Fire"Move!"Theron's shout broke whatever had frozen between them, and Wren dropped low on instinct a half second before his blade passed over her shoulder and into the throat of the rider closing fast from behind her. The man fell without a sound. Wren didn't have time to thank him for it."You're supposed to be dead," Theron said, breathless, already turning to meet the next threat. "Or gone. My father's men searched for years and found nothing, how are you here? in a village I nearly rode past without a second glance?""Because staying alive meant staying somewhere your father's men would never think to look twice," Wren shot back, shifting to block a strike aimed at his exposed flank. "It's not a coincidence you found me tonight, Theron. It's Vaelith's men who found me first.""Vaelith." His jaw tightened around the name like it explained too much and not nearly enough. "They're not supposed to know the border village""They've had eyes here for weeks

Chapter 4: The Prince Rides Blind"Get them inside now, both of them, move!"Callum was already moving toward the two Hollis boys as they stumbled into the ruined light spilling from Wren's doorway, the older one still dragging his bleeding brother by the collar of his shirt. Wren, a bit shifted, caught the younger boy before he collapsed entirely, his wolf shape flickering weakly at the edges like he no longer had the strength to hold it."Why are they screaming his name?" Mira demanded, already dropping to her knees beside them, hands moving fast and sure over the worst of the wounds. "Who's Theron to two Hollis boys?""They're not screaming for him," Wren said, understanding arriving a half second before the words did. "They're screaming because of him. Look at the road."Beyond the treeline, torches were multiplying, not scattering the way a retreating raiding party would, but converging, and threaded through the chaos was a new sound, a rider breaking hard from the dark, blade

"I'm not standing here while that happens.""And if it's a trap built to pull you out into the open, you'll die instead, and then whose mother are Ashe and Elowen?" Callum's grip didn't loosen. "Vaelith wants you gone as much as they want the twins taken. You walking into a screaming village in the dark is exactly what they'd hope for.""He's not wrong," Mira said, low, and reluctant. "Wren, think.""I am thinking. I'm thinking about Sela Hollis trusting me to keep an eye on her boys while she's away, and I'm thinking about what kind of woman I'd be if I let them die in my place.""Then I'll go," Callum said. "Alone. Faster, and Vaelith's men don't know my face the way

Ashe stood by the window, hands still trembling, claws only half-retracted at his fingertips, the tips catching the lamplight."I didn't mean to," he said. "It just, it happened, Mom.""It happened? " Wren set down theknife she'd been using to chop root vegetables, harder than she needed to. The blade rang against the wood."Things don't just happen, Ashe. Not to us. Not ever. You know that.""Why not?" Elowen's voice came from the doorway, pitifully, mom why? "Why can't things just happen to us like they happen to everyone else?""Because everyone else doesn't have to hide who they are, but we do. "Then tell us why!" Elowen's shout rattled the shutters.
