"Bride? What are you talking about?" I stepped forward, my brows drawn up in confusion.
Her eyes narrowed in annoyance, "You're going to be taking my daughter's place to marry that monster. I went through a whole lot of stress to find you, so you had better be worth it." "What the-" I trailed off, "I'm not just going to marry some guy I don't even know. That's crazy." "You will," her mouth which was painted a bright red pulled into a smile. “You'll do exactly as I say or I'll blow a hole through your friend’s head." Beside me Trisha let out a startled cry and turned to me with wide eyes. "You are prisoners in one of the most dangerous prisons in the country. If you're found dead, it won't come as a shock to anybody. You're extremely disposable. So if I were you, I wouldn't test me," Lucrezia warned, "If you don't do as I say, I'll get rid of you and find replacements. It's that easy." My jaw dropped, horror making my spine stiffen. How evil was this man that she was willing to murder people for the sake of her daughter not ending up with him? "Who is the man?" Before I could blink, her hand rose up in the air and came down on my face with a loud thwack. I staggered back, cupping my cheeks as pain bloomed on my face. "The next question you ask, I'll have my men detach some fingers from your friend," she said, then shifted her gaze to the two men behind us, "Take them away." We were grabbed by our arms and dragged out of the room. At the end of the hallway, the other guard began to pull Trish in the opposite direction. "No!" She cried, "Winnie, help me! " I knocked my shoulder into the unprepared guard holding me and raced towards my friend. The man grabbed me by my air and I screamed as I felt my scalp burn. "Let me go!" I screamed, clawing at his hand but his grip on me didn't loosen, "Trish, it'll be fine. You'll be fine!" I screamed as she was pulled further away and finally out of sight. Tears streaked down my cheeks as the girl I had sworn to protect disappeared from view. "If you obey Lucrezia, your friend will be returned unharmed. If not-" he let out a dark laugh that told me more than words what the consequences would be. A shiver wracked through me and I suddenly felt very cold. He pushed me into a room and I tripped and fell to the ground. "You idiot," someone snapped, "We can't have bruises on the bride." I glanced up in surprise to see that there were about five women in the room, each one setting up in a different corner. One of them approached to help me up and then led me to a small bathroom off the side. "Shower," she ordered before walking away, leaving the door ajar. Clenching my jaw, I took off my clothes and turned on the icy cold shower water. After that, they shampooed my hair and then handed me a robe. My brown hair was cut to shoulder length, with flattering layers and I was given some side part bangs. Face masks were placed over my face and someone even had me open my teeth for a hasty teeth whitening treatment. My eyebrows were plucked and my entire body waxed. They helped put the blue contacts over my grey eyes and then I was helped into a lacy wedding dress that weighed a ton. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I was completely unrecognizable. I looked like the old me. The Edwina from years ago who had shopped in designer stores and flown first class all around the world. Before that bastard had gotten too greedy. I pushed the thought away, not wanting to think about him. The man who had ruined my life. "We're running late, let's go," the hairstylist announced. The door swung open and Lucrezia walked in, eyes pinning me in place. She drank me in silently before giving a sharp nod. "Good job, ladies," she said with a smile, "You'll be well compensated for today. And let me remind you again that you should keep your mouths shut if you don't want to face dire consequences." One of the guard stepped in with a briefcase full of cash and then began to hand out bundles to the women as they walked off. "It's time," she announced with an evil gleam shining in her eyes. A blacked out SUV was waiting outside and we climbed into the back, one of the guards taking the driver's seat. I felt like a completely different person, unrecognisable as the car sped away from that abandoned building. "You'll do whatever your new husband tells you to do," Lucrezia warned me, "You won't give him any reason to end this marriage." "How long do you expect me to do this? I can't just hand my life over to him forever." Her mouth pressed into a thin line, "That was the fate that would have befallen my daughter if I hadn't taken this bold step. But now my poor Sofia will be stuck in hiding for the rest of her days." I raised a brow. So while her daughter would be free to live out the rest of her life, I would be forced to live with a monster. I didn't exactly pity Sofia. "You'll keep your mouth shut and spread your legs for him no matter how many times he demands it. You'll take whatever abuse he metes out without complaint and if you ever think of telling anyone your true identity, just think about Patricia's life first." I smoothed my sweaty hands down my dress as the car came to a halt in front of a church. My eyes widened as I recognised the church. "A-are we in New York?" I asked nervously. I couldn't be here. I couldn't be in this wretched city. Not again. She eyed me with disdain before climbing out of the car. With a sigh of resignation, I opened the car door and stepped down too, knowing that I had just signed my life away.WINNIEI was in mid conversation with Lydia when a knock came on the door. Maybe it was more along the lines of an argument. We were arguing about something ridiculous. She was insisting that I spent the whole day shopping and I found the idea very exhausting.I had more designer clothes than I knew what to do with and I haven't even gotten to wear half of them. But she insisted. Said that it was to make me look less suspicious. I wanted to do something less self imposed. Maybe explore the city. I can't remember the last time I was in a coffee shop.I can't even remember the last time I've gone out to get some flowers or some books but I guess that was the idea behind prison. You never got to leave and you have to come to terms with the idea that you're meant to remain behind those prison bars forever.Something that I struggled to accept everyday.“You need to understand what it'll make you look less suspicious, it was all Sofia ever liked to do. Shop for things until the space in he
WINNIEMy heart raced at the thought. The thought of his intense dark eyes prying into my thoughts, monitoring my every activity. Had he heard my conversation with Russo? Does he know? Could he tell what was happening? Did he know that I wasn't Sofia? Or maybe he was just biding his time.Waiting for the perfect time to strike. Maybe he was a ruthless murderer after all.“You look a little pale. Are you alright?” He finally said. His voice brought me out of my reverie and I blinked in mild surprise because that was the last thing that I was expecting him to ask me.I quickly masked my face into a neutral expression and turned away. If I continued this way, I was definitely going to expose myself and get myself killed. Which was the last thing that I wanted to do. “I'm fine,” the tone of my voice sounded extremely calculated and calm.“I'm alright, why wouldn't I be?” I said. He said nothing in response as he came closer to the pool. In the space of a second, he pulled his shirt ov
WINNIEThe water below my feet felt very warm. I was too bored to stay in the room. I was almost convinced that the walls were beginning to close in. I had to get out and what better way to do it than taking a swim. I was clad in a plain white bikini, my hair was packed up in a messy bun and the sun against my skin felt divine.I was almost convinced that there was a slight chance that I could have been dreaming about this moment. I closed my eyes and sighed as my memory traveled back to the days that I would take a swim with my sister.I could remember our laughter and us acting goofy, drenching each other and pushing each other deeper into the pool. My chest clenched at the memory and I felt a sort of heaviness settle over me.I forced my mind to drift away from the memory and bring me back to reality. I was forced to be married to a Mafia boss and a suspected murderer. This was my reality and I had to face it. The fact that I had been planted into this situation without any means
WINNIEMy shoulders sagged in relief as our gaze traveled to Lydia who was standing a few inches away from us.“Are you okay Miss?” Her inquisitive gaze traveled between the both of us. She knew that I wasn't fine. I could only be grateful that she showed up at the right time. Russo was forced to step back and he shot me a pointed look and then forced up a smile.“I hope you continue to enjoy your stay here,” he said.“Of course. I intend to” the goading was subtle but he was quick enough to catch it. I watched as his eyes darkened with rage and yet he was forced to retreat and walk down the hallway. My gaze lingered on his back for a minute longer. I was going to have to be more careful than ever because I realised that Roman wasn't the only threat that i needed be wary of.“You need to be careful around him. I'm not sure I ever really trusted him” she shot me a worried look.“Tell me something I don't know. Apparently he and Sofia used to sleep together. Can you believe that?” I sai
WINNIEI was convinced that I had stopped breathing at that very moment as Uncle Elliot pinned me with an inquisitive gaze. I realized that it might have been a little bit forward on my part to have picked him out of all the people on the table to start a conversation with.I closed my eyes and sighed, I hoped with everything within me that he wouldn't be able to recognize me.The corners of his lips tilted up into a bright smile. If I hadn't known him too well, I would have been fooled by it and I would have thought that it was genuine.I knew that it wasn't but that didn't stop me from returning his fake smile back.“What could you possibly want to know about me Mrs Moretti?” He raised an eyebrow at me in question. There was an undertone in his voice indicating that he was slightly uncomfortable being the subject of interest. It was too subtle and if I didn't know why better, I would have missed it.“Anything you'd like to share” I lifted my shoulder into a casual shrug. How I was a
WINNIEMy blood instantly ran cold as I spotted Uncle Elliot from among the men that were seated around the table, even though I didn't want to give away the fact that I was staring at him a little longer than necessary. I couldn't help the way my blood ran cold at the sight of him. My throat instantly became dry and I suddenly didn't want to be around him.The air suddenly felt too hot, and I felt I was suffocating and running out of breath. My attention snapped over to Roman who frowned as he stared at me. His brows were furrowed with slight worry as he observed me. I could feel Russo's gaze lingering on our joined hands on the table.“You don't look so good. You are pale” Roman said. His voice was cold and yet it was almost as if he was concerned. It was almost difficult to believe that he was capable of kindness. That he was capable of caring about anyone.“I told you, you could stay in the bedroom if you weren't feeling up to it” he squeezed my hand a little tighter than usual.
