Chapter 8

Author: Feather South
I took a deep breath and stepped out. "Hannah," I called her name.

Everyone's attention turned to me. Hannah was stunned by my appearance. Then, her expression turned ferocious.

"Julia York, you bitch! It's all your fault! If it weren't for you, my sister wouldn't have left me!"

I ignored her insults and pulled out my phone. Then, I played the recording in full. Leah's fearful sobs echoed in the hallway.

"Hannah, please, let them go… I don't want to do this anymore. I just want to be friends with Julia and the others.

"You say that everything you do is for my sake, but you've only ever brought me pain. I hate you!"

Hannah's crazed expression stiffened. She looked hurt, and her grip on the scalpel loosened.

"You… hate me?" She muttered to Leah, "Why do you hate me?"

It was the perfect opportunity. I picked up the decorative potted plant next to me and threw it at her with all my strength.

The pot shattered beside her feet. The dirt got everywhere.

The police and an ambulance soon arrived at the scene. Hannah was cuffed and arrested.Leah had passed out from shock. The medics used a stretcher to move her into the ambulance. As a key figure in the case, I went to the police station to have my testimony recorded. I handed all the evidence I had found, including the photos, the diary, and the recordings, to the police. The truth would be revealed soon.Hannah had a history of severe mental instability and violent behavior, so she was sent to another psychiatric hospital with better security. She had a long treatment to look forward to. Even though Leah was an accomplice, the evidence showed that she had been threatened and traumatized, so the police didn't convict her. Her parents rushed over from her hometown. After applying for a leave of absence, they fetched her home so she could undergo therapy. The last time I saw her was in a hospital room. She was lying on the bed and staring off into space. She had fallen into depre

However, I couldn't call the police. Things would escalate if the police were involved. Since Leah was Hannah's accomplice, her reputation and future would be ruined.Leah was already pitiful, to begin with. I couldn't bring myself to make things worse for her.I couldn't tell the lecturers either. The lecturers would want to talk to Hannah and Leah. But doing so to a lunatic like Hannah might agitate her and push her to do worse things. After racking my brain, I decided to fight back with a safer method. I clipped the most important parts of the recording and censored Leah's name. I kept only the parts where Hannah threatened to harm others. Then, I created an anonymous email to send the edited recording along with an explanation to two people. One was the university's Director of Counseling, while the other was our dorm's Director of Residential Services. The email's subject title read, "Danger! Someone is brainwashing a student in Crown Residence Hall."Then, I deleted all tra

I suddenly thought about Leah's earphones. The Ouija board said that the earphones were beside the eye.It wasn't a prophecy, but a fact. If the eyeball was left in the hallway, where were the earphones? Hannah must be using them to eavesdrop on us in our room!I started to act. The door to the rooftop was usually locked, but Emily mentioned that a spare key was hidden in the fire hose cabinet.I found the key and went to the rooftop. After opening the heavy metal door, I could smell moisture and dust. The rooftop was spacious but messy. There were various scrapped furniture and junk. In the corner was an abandoned water pump room.I held my breath and slowly approached it. The door was unlocked and left ajar.I peeked in through the cracks. It was dark inside, but I could barely make out a black backpack. It must be Hannah's!I waited for five whole minutes. After making sure that no one was around, I slipped into the room.I quickly opened the backpack and found Leah's earpho

Leah really had a twin sister. Furthermore, her sister was a patient at Third Cross Psychiatric Hospital. That only made the words at the back of the photo seem much more ominous. As I held the photo frame, my palms began to sweat uncontrollably. A terrifying scheme began to take shape in my mind, but I needed proof, solid proof. My eyes landed back on the locked diary. I pulled out a bobby pin from my drawer and bent it straight. Then, I carefully pushed it into the lock's body. Old locks like this one had a simple mechanism. It was probably easy to pick it open.I held my breath and manipulated the key pins inside little by little. The lock opened with a clack.I eagerly opened the diary. The scent of old paper filled my nose. The handwriting on the first page was neat. It was filled with Leah's anticipation for campus life. But the further I read, the messier the handwriting got. A lot of parts seemed like they had been soaked in water before, blurring the words on the paper

  • Two Faces in the Dark   Chapter 4

My blood froze in my veins. Leah was standing beside my bed, asking me why I hadn't gone back to sleep. However, the Leah who was sleeping beside me just now and whose wound I felt had disappeared without a trace. My mind went blank, and I started spiralling. Was it a ghost? Or had I gone mad? When I stayed silent, Leah leaned in and asked in concern, "What's wrong, Julia? Why is your face so pale?"I stared at her face illuminated by the light from my phone. Her face, her expression, and the way she spoke were just like Leah's.I tried to calm myself down. Being scared wouldn't fix anything. The wound… The way the centipede-like wound felt under my fingers was too real. It couldn't have been a dream. There was also the matter of Leah waking up to use the bathroom.I suddenly recalled that Leah had mild night blindness. She always needed to feel her way to the bathroom if she got up at night, so she was always very slow. She couldn't return quietly like just now.Besides that,
