Carlotta's POV

I couldn't shake the anxious thoughts racing through my head as I hurried home from school. Every step felt urgent, like I was running out of time before something important slipped away from me.

Tonight. Finally tonight.

As soon as I reached Mama's apartment, I rushed to my small room and pulled out the old laptop from under my bed. Dust particles danced in the afternoon sunlight as I wiped down the screen and powered it up.

Please still work. Please.

The machine wheezed to life, and I quickly checked my email. There it was - the message I'd been waiting for from the underground racing organizers.

"Congratulations, Anonymous. Your prize is ready for collection. Pier warehouse district, Warehouse 7, midnight tonight. Come alone. Bring your bike for verification. - Underground Racing Commission"

Fifty thousand dollars. It's really happening.

I checked the time - 4:30 PM. Mama wouldn't be home from the Blackwood mansion until at least 7:00, which gave me plenty of time to

Gabriel’s POVI could finally breathe again. After days in that hospital bed, staring at the same white ceiling until my eyes hurt, the nurse told me I was being discharged. I swear, I almost jumped out of the bed. My body still ached, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to get out of that place. I wanted to feel air again. I wanted to move, even if everything still hurt like hell.I was packing my things when I heard footsteps coming into the room. It was my father and I needed no one to tell me that. He walked in with his arms crossed behind his back, the way he always did when he wanted to pretend he was calm. His eyes scanned the room first like he was inspecting a crime scene, not a hospital ward. Then his gaze stopped on the small flower vase beside my bed.He stared at it for a second, his eyebrows lifting. “Let me guess,” he said, voice deep and sharp, “that is from that girl?”I sighed. I already felt my irritation growing. “It’s from Carlota,” I said. “Not ‘that girl.’ Her name

Carlota’s POVThe moment Paxton left and the door finally closed, I felt my whole body freeze. My heart was beating too fast. My hands were shaking. I didn’t even know what emotion was on my face anymore. I tried to breathe slowly as I walked back into the living room, but Dante was already staring at me the way he always did—like he could see straight through my skin and read all my secrets.“Who was that?” Dante asked quietly. His voice wasn’t loud, but it didn’t have to be. That tone alone made my stomach twist. “The one at the door. The boy.”I forced my shoulders to relax. I forced my voice to sound steady. “He is just… a friend.”I kept my eyes on the floor, afraid that if I looked into his eyes, he would notice the panic hiding behind mine. But it didn’t matter. I could feel him studying me.Please don’t notice anything. Please. He watched me for a long second before he looked away like it didn’t matter anymore. “Forget him,” Dante said. “I didn’t come here to talk about him.”

Carlota’s POV"I'm alright." I replied him. There was a knock on the door at that moment and I went to open. This certainly isn't the best time for anyone to visit. I felt my whole body go still as I stared at Paxton standing in the doorway. I didn’t even understand how he found my house, or why he looked so angry, or why today of all days he decided to appear in front of me. He didn’t even greet me. He just reached into his jacket and pulled out a file. A thick file I had never seen in my life. And he held it out like he was holding my entire future in his hand.“What is this?” he asked. His voice was steady, but his eyes were sharp. My heart skipped. “Paxton… this isn’t the right time. Can we not do this here?”“No,” he said immediately. “I’m not going home until you tell me why you’re married.”I froze. Why does he know about my marriage? I don't understand. The word slapped me so hard mentally that I almost took a step back. “What?” I whispered, my voice cracking. “Who told you

Carlota’s POVA whole week had passed since everything happened. A lot of things within one week that I couldn't keep up with. I kept pretending things were normal, but they were not. Nothing feels normal anymore. This morning, I was in the living room helping mom clean up the breakfast plates. My mind wasn’t even here. It was somewhere far away, thinking of things I didn’t want to think about. That was when there was a knock at the door.Mom sighed and said, “Carlota, check who is at the door.”I wiped my hands quickly and hurried to the door. I didn’t expect anyone. No one ever really came here. So I opened it without thinking. And I froze. I saw the person that I didn't want to see for a long time and the same person I thought was already dead. Dante stood there, right in front of me, holding a bunch of flowers. The kind that looked like they didn’t belong in this small neighbourhood. The kind that looked expensive.I felt my heartbeat jump.“Dante?” I whispered without meaning to

Paxton’s POV The last day of the week always felt slow. My head had been heavy since yesterday, thinking about Carlota and the stupid misunderstanding in the hallway. I didn’t show it on my face though. I was walking toward my locker when my boys spotted me and rushed over. They always came in groups, loud and curious, like they lived inside trouble. Sometimes I don't know what to do with them but I got to love them. “Boss,” one of them called out, jogging closer, “how’s Gabriel doing? Heard he almost died.”I rolled my eyes. “He didn’t almost die. He just broke a shoulder and bruised half of his body.”Another guy exhaled in relief. “So he’s good?”“As good as someone who got thrown across a racetrack can be,” I said. They murmured to themselves, nodding like they were comparing Gabriel’s stupidity to their own. Then one of them stepped closer. “If they’re targeting him,” he said, “doesn’t that mean they’ll soon target you too?”I stopped walking and turned to face them. They wer

Carlota’s POV Gabriel kept staring at the door even after Paxton left. His face was full of confusion, like his mind was running in circles. I could tell he was replaying Paxton’s words again and again because that was exactly what I was doing too.“What did he mean by that?” he whispered, almost talking to himself. “If only I knew… knew what? Why say something like that and just walk out?”I tried not to look too interested. I didn’t want him digging into things he wasn’t supposed to know. My heart was beating too fast, and my palms were sweaty inside my jacket. I hated how anything related to my secret made me feel like this.“Maybe he’s just trying to annoy you,” I said softly. But Gabriel shook his head. “No. I doubt it.” He turned his eyes on me again, searching my face too closely. “Did you understand what he meant?”My chest tightened. Don’t panic, just breathe.“No,” I said, shaking my head. “I didn’t understand anything.” It came out a little too fast. Before Gabriel could a
