LOGINEmma arrived at the office close to ten o’clock. Her steps were hurried, her breathing still unsteady as she dropped into her work chair.
“Emma!”
Jenny’s voice immediately snapped at her.
“Where have you been?” Jenny glanced at her watch. “This is a new record for being late, you know.”
“Don’t lecture me,” Emma replied weakly as she turned on her computer. “My head hurts.”
Jenny rolled her chair closer. Too close. Her eyes narrowed, focusing on Emma’s neck, partially hidden by her hair.
“Hey,” Jenny muttered. “What’s that on your neck?”
Emma reflexively pulled her hair forward. “What are you talking about, Jen?”
“Red,” Jenny said firmly. “And that is definitely not an allergy.”
Emma let out a long sigh. “Please don’t make a scene.”
Jenny crossed her arms. “Emma… what did you do last night?”
Emma went silent for a few seconds. Her hand clenched on the desk.
“I got drunk,” she finally said.
Jenny’s eyes widened. “You? Drunk?”
“Yes.”
“Emma, that joke isn’t funny. You get dizzy just from drinking soda,” Jenny whispered. “Since when can you get drunk?”
“Since last night,” Emma answered shortly.
Jenny leaned in even closer. “Tell me the truth. Who did you spend the night with?”
Emma swallowed. “A stranger. I didn’t know him.”
“What?” Jenny’s voice rose reflexively, then she quickly covered her mouth. “Are you serious?”
“I can’t believe it either,” Emma replied softly.
Jenny shook her head in disbelief. “This is insane. You know the risks, right?”
“I know.”
“And you didn’t forget protection, right?” Jenny pressed.
Emma shook her head. “I don’t know. I was drunk, I—”
“Oh my God, Emma!” Jenny smacked her forehead.
“He’s not a stupid guy,” Jenny added confidently. “He must’ve remembered to use protection before doing that with you.”
“So what made you get that drunk?” Jenny demanded.
Emma turned her face away. “I was upset.”
“Just upset?”
Emma let out a heavy breath. “I caught Jonathan again.”
Jenny scoffed sharply. “Cheating again?”
Emma nodded. “The same person.”
“Bastard,” Jenny cursed. “And you’re still staying?”
“I have a reason to stay,” Emma replied quickly. “I can’t back out now. Not before I achieve my goal.”
Jenny looked at her for a long moment. “Emma… don’t be so hard on yourself.”
“I need solutions, not advice,” Emma cut in quietly. “I just need time to think.”
Jenny sighed, then nodded. “Okay. I’ll shut up.”
A few seconds of silence passed.
“Oh, by the way,” Jenny suddenly said, trying to change the subject. “You’ve heard the latest news, right?”
“What news?”
“We’re getting a new CEO.”
Emma raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t Mr. Henry still—”
“Transferred,” Jenny cut in. “His youngest son. He’s been living overseas all this time. They say he’s young and handsome.”
“Today?”
“Yes. He’ll be introduced soon.”
Emma leaned back in her chair. “Great. Late on an important day.”
Suddenly the atmosphere in the office shifted. Several employees stood up. Whispers rippled from different directions.
“That’s him,” Jenny whispered. “Looks like our new CEO has arrived.”
Emma stood as well and turned toward the front—and her heart seemed to stop beating.
The man walked in with calm steps. A sharp suit, an upright posture, a face she knew far too well.
Emma’s breath caught.
No…
The man stopped at the front of the room.
“Good morning, sir,” all the employees greeted in unison, bowing respectfully.
Alex nodded, his face flat and expressionless.
“Allow me to introduce Mr. Alex, our new CEO,” the man beside Alex announced.
Emma lowered her head even further, hiding herself so Alex wouldn’t see her. Her chest tightened instantly, her head buzzing.
“Starting today,” Alex said firmly, “I will be leading this company, replacing Mr. Lucas.”
Applause filled the room. All eyes were on him.
All—except Emma.
Her hands trembled on the desk. She couldn’t bring herself to lift her face.
This is impossible.
Why does it have to be him?
“Emma?” Jenny nudged her arm. “Do you know him?”
Emma shook her head quickly. “No,” she answered shortly. “I… need to go to the restroom for a bit.”
Without waiting for a response, she stepped back slowly, as calmly as possible, away from her desk. Everyone was still busy welcoming the new CEO.
No one noticed her.
Once she was far enough away, Emma turned and walked faster toward the hallway.
“Calm down,” she whispered to herself. “Calm down, Emma.”
But her steps faltered.
Why is he here? Is this a coincidence… or the beginning of a new problem?
Emma quickened her pace and disappeared behind the hallway door, leaving the room without anyone realizing she was gone.
She wasn’t ready to face Alex yet.
Not ready to accept the fact that the man she had been with last night was her own boss.
“Where is Emma?”Alex’s voice sounded cold the moment the door of the Swan family’s grand mansion opened. The servant who had opened the door looked nervous. But before he could answer, a woman stepped out from the living room with graceful steps.“Mr. Alex?”Sophia smiled widely, as if she hadn’t expected the man standing at her doorstep.“Please come in,” she said quickly, her eyes gleaming with calculation. “What important matter would make you come here personally?”Alex looked indifferent.“I’m here looking for Emma. I assume you know where she is right now, Mrs. Sophia,” he said flatly, though his tone sounded far sharper.Sophia kept smiling, though inwardly she felt slightly annoyed that the man hadn’t even greeted her.“Come inside first. We can talk in there,” she said as she opened the door wider.Alex finally stepped inside. The Swan mansion, spacious and luxurious, felt unusually quiet tonight.Sophia walked ahead of him and casually sat down on the living room sofa.“I’l
The moment the hospital room door opened, the sound of sobbing filled the air.“Dad…”Alice rushed forward and wrapped her arms around Henry’s frail body on the hospital bed. An IV line was attached to his hand, and the heart monitor beside his bed beeped steadily.Henry startled for a second, then gave her a weak smile. His hand, still steady enough, lifted slowly to stroke his daughter’s back.“I’m fine,” he murmured. “Don’t cry. I’m just tired.”Alice shook her head, tears falling uncontrollably. “I was scared I’d lose you.”Jonathan stood not far from the bed, his face tight with tension. Lucas stood beside him, calmer, though his sharp eyes carefully studied Henry.Alice finally released her father and wiped her tears quickly. Then she looked at him anxiously.“How could this turn into a heart attack, Dad? What happened?”Her tone shifted—from worry to anger.“This must be because of Emma, right?” she snapped. “Because she ran away from the wedding and shocked you!”“That’s enoug
“Emma!”The shout cut through the late afternoon air outside the hospital.Emma, who had just been about to get into the car, froze. Her hand was still gripping the door handle. Edward stood beside her, ready to close the door once she was inside.William strode toward them, his face flushed red with anger. Shopia and Rose followed close behind, their steps just as hurried.“What do you think you’re doing here, Emma?” William barked without preamble. “Do you think this is some kind of joke? Running off on your wedding day!”Emma slowly closed the car door. Then she turned and looked at her father without fear.“Yes. I ran away,” she answered calmly. “And this time, I won’t let you destroy my future.”“You—”“My life has been ruined since the day you brought them home,” Emma cut in, pointing at Shopia and Rose. “And now I won’t let you control my life anymore. My future is mine to decide.”“You ungrateful child!” William snapped. “Who took care of you all these years if not Shopia? Ros
The Clayton family moved quickly down the corridor toward the intensive care unit where Henry was being treated. Alice’s face was tense. Jonathan walked in front with long strides and heavy breaths. Lucas followed behind, composed as always, though his sharp eyes scanned the situation carefully. But Jonathan suddenly stopped. On the long bench outside the ICU sat someone in a white gown that stood out starkly against the sterile hospital walls.Emma.The wedding dress still clung to her body. Her long veil was folded beside her on the chair. Her makeup was still flawless—though her eyes were swollen.Jonathan stiffened.Emma slowly stood when she saw them approaching. Her face was calm.Too calm.No regret. No guilt. That was what made Jonathan’s blood boil.He stepped forward quickly and grabbed her arm roughly.“You did this on purpose, didn’t you?” he hissed. “You ran away just to humiliate me in front of everyone?”Emma met his gaze.Unflinching.“I will never marry you, Jonathan.
The hotel’s main ballroom had transformed into a sea of white and gold.Crystal arrangements hung from the ceiling like scattered stars. White lilies and pastel roses decorated every corner, forming an aisle lined with a soft ivory carpet laid out flawlessly. Warm lights reflected off the satin-covered round tables, casting a gentle glow across the room.Every single detail had been carefully chosen.By Jonathan himself. He stood near the wedding stage, an expensive cream suit fitting his body perfectly. His hair was neatly styled, his face confident—at least, trying to look that way.Emma would be happy seeing this.He imagined her expression as she stepped into the ballroom. Her eyes would sparkle. Her lips might curve into that small smile she rarely showed. All these colors were Emma’s favorites.Soft white. Warm gold. Elegant touches of pastel flowers. Luxurious, but not excessive.Jonathan had eve
Emma sat upright in front of the vanity mirror. The white gown hugged her body perfectly. Delicate beads shimmered every time she moved, catching the light and scattering it across the room. Her hair was styled into an elegant updo, adorned with a long veil that flowed softly, nearly brushing the floor. Her makeup was flawless—her skin radiant, her eyes brighter, her lips tinted a soft red as if brushed by rose petals. She looked like a bride from a fairytale. And that was exactly what made her chest tighten even more. One hour.In one hour, everything would begin.“You look absolutely beautiful, Emma. Honestly, I almost didn’t recognize you,” the makeup artist said for the umpteenth time.Emma offered a faint smile.A smile that stopped at her lips.“Thank you.”Her hands, folded neatly in her lap, were trembling violently. She stared at her reflection in the large mirror before her. That wasn’t her.It was a doll.A doll perfectly dressed to be displayed at the altar, to be exchange
The out-of-town trip came like an unintended escape.Early that morning, Emma was already seated in the back of the black car speeding away from Jakarta. Edward was behind the wheel, focused on driving, while Alex sat in the front passenger seat with his laptop open, reading reports with a blank ex
Emma’s consciousness returned slowly. Her head felt heavy. Her vision blurred. The faint scent of the room gradually became familiar—aged wood and an overly strong air freshener. She blinked several times. The ceiling… wasn’t unfamiliar. Her body went rigid. This was her room. The bedroom in her fa
Henry fell silent for a long moment after the confession slipped from Emma’s lips. The old man’s face went pale. The hand resting on the armrest trembled slightly. His gaze stayed fixed on Emma—as if hoping she would suddenly laugh and say it was all just a misunderstanding.“You…” Henry’s voice wa
“Let go of me, Mr. Alex!”Emma struggled to pull her arm free from the man’s grip. Her heels nearly slipped against the marble floor of the Clayton residence courtyard. But Alex kept walking without looking back, dragging her toward his car.“Mr. Alex, I said let go!” Emma snapped, trying to hold b
