~Ethan John~

It had been two weeks since that cold, blood-soaked day in the underground compound. The days had dragged on, each one blurring into the next. I had settled into a strange, uneasy routine at the mansion. Dante’s injuries had healed enough for him to move around freely, which meant I hadn’t had another chance to follow him since that day.

I was sitting in my room, going over the map of the underground compound I had carefully mapped out after our last encounter. I had texted Mr. Vince about what I’d seen and heard, and he’d responded with a simple directive, “Look for more, but make sure Dante doesn’t find out you’re snooping.”

I deleted the messages immediately after I texted Mr. Vince the whole information I was able to gather.

I stood up from my desk, stretching when I heard footsteps outside my door. I wasn’t sure if it was just my paranoia, or if I really did sense something was going on.

I opened the door and I was greeted by the sight of Dante, dressed in a black suit, with a couple of his men standing behind him. He was busy backing orders and the dark circles under his eyes showed he hadn’t had enough sleep.

“Where are you going?” I asked before I could stop myself.

Dante stopped what he was doing, adjusting his tie as his eyes slowly lifted to meet mine. He looked like he hadn’t expected me to ask him such a question.

“Business,” he replied curtly, his voice flat and emotionless.

I couldn’t help the curiosity that crept up inside me, this might be another means to know what is going on and I could have enough information to send to Mr. Vince,  “Can I come along?” I asked quickly before I could second-guess myself.

Dante paused and I knew I had fucked up, I shouldn’t have asked that, so I had to save myself and I quickly said, “I noticed everyone’s armed, and… who knows? If there’s an emergency, I might be able to help. I can treat any injuries.”

Dante didn’t say anything but his eyes were on me, it felt like my words had drawn his focus on me, but before he could answer, Luca who was standing beside him with his usual stoic expression, stepped closer to him. I heard his voice clearly, despite the quiet space between us.

“We can’t trust him, boss,” Luca whispered, his tone low, but filled with suspicion. “He’s still new. He doesn’t belong with us. We can’t let him get too close.”

I had expected Dante to tell me to stay back but to my surprise, Dante didn’t respond to Luca right away. Instead, a faint, almost mocking smile played at the corners of his mouth, and he looked over at me again.

“You can tag along,” he said, “But you better keep up, Ethan.”

I barely contained my shock. Since I had met Luca, this was the first time he looked taken aback, I noticed his jaws were clenched but he choose not to saying nothing, Dante gestured for his men to follow him as he walked away and I quickly grabbed my first aid kit. I followed Dante and his men out of the mansion.

The drive was silent. I watched quietly as the car moved from the quiet street around the mansion to a desolated bushy road, we headed into the countryside, away from civilization.

The car finally stopped and I was confused, it had stopped in a secluded area with nothing but buses there were no houses, or people except for a vehicle that had stopped right in front of us. A man stepped out, he was fully covered in tattoos, his face rugged and cold. He had a faint snarl at the corner of his lips.

Dante, Luca, and his other men stepped out of the car “Stay in the car,” Dante had said as they walked away, I looked through the rear mirror and observed what was happening between them, I heard their hushing voices as the gruesome man moved closer to Dante, I couldn’t make out what they were saying, the energy was off and it was obvious they were arguing.

I quickly pulled out my phone, discreetly taking a picture of them, I was able to take a clear picture of the man but each time I tried to take a picture of Dante it got extremely blurred, the movement was quick, the angle was bad and his people too didn’t make it any easier.

I was so focused on taking Dante’s picture and I didn’t notice when Luca turned to look at me, I quickly dropped my phone, he narrowed his eyes at me, and left for Luca I knew I wouldn’t be in this place.

I was shocked by the sudden sound of a gunshot that pierced the air, and chaos erupted. The remaining men in the other vehicle quickly stood up as they racked their guns, I quickly stepped out of the car and ducked below the car, trying to shield myself as the gunfire filled the air.

Then, just as suddenly as it had begun, the gunfire stopped. I slowly lifted my head, my eyes scanning the area. I watched as the opposing group, those men with the gruesome appearance, climbed back into their trunk and sped off, leaving behind a handful of bodies in the dirt.

“Ethan!” I suddenly heard Dante shout “Get over here and tend to my people.”

I didn’t hesitate. I rushed towards his injured members and knelt on the floor quickly attending to them, my hands were shaking uncontrollably, and every movement felt like it was too slow, for someone who hadn’t practiced for three years now, it was hard to focus.

Dante knelt beside me and I turned to look at him, his gaze was cold and calculated as usual, and he had a mockery smile on his lips as he aggressively grabbed my cheeks. My heart pounded fast as I could feel the anger radiating off him, his gaze traveled to my shaky hand and then back to my face.

“You better get used to this, Ethan,” he spat. “This is the reality now. You’re one of us. A member of my family. And you better stop shaking. It seems he never saw something like this,” he burst into a cruel laughter

After a short laughter, Dante let go of my cheek and stood up, looking down at me with a mocking smile. “This is just the beginning, you are going to see more people shot to death, you should get used to it quickly German doll.”

He walked away without another word, leaving me kneeling in the dirt, my hands still shaking. I let out a long, shaky breath, staring at the bloodied bandages in my hands.

Of course, I am used to seeing people get shot, slump, and die, but I had to keep up with the innocence to avoid his suspicions.

  • Under The Mafia’s Grip   9: Distance!

LauraIt had been over a week since I arrived at the mansion, and things between Dante and me were far from good. He had made it clear without words that he did not want me around. The distance was eating me up and the silence was louder than any confrontation could ever be. His sudden habit of spending more time in the casinos made it worse because he deliberately avoided me. He did not even try to start a fight, he just kept himself out of my reach. That alone was enough punishment.Sending me to the East Coast was a well-planned action, orchestrated by Dante himself. All efforts to try and get to know what was going on with him had proved abortive. Each time that I tried, he only grew further away from me. It was sickening. I couldn't keep up anymore. As I walked around the room, trying to ease the tension that formed in my chest, a thought struck my mind. Was he trying to do away with me? I kept seeking answers internally until I started to feel weak in the knees and I collapsed o

  • Under The Mafia’s Grip   8: First Blood!

EthanThe moment I shut Dante’s door behind me, I let out a heavy sigh of relief. My chest rose and fell like I had just walked through fire and somehow made it out alive. "That was some nerve I had in there," I whispered to myself as I leaned on the wall for a second before slowly walking toward my room. Every step felt heavy, not because of exhaustion but because of the weight in my head. What would have happened if it had not gone the way it did? If Laura had not walked in when she did? My mind replayed it like a cruel film. I would have been dead by now or lying on the floor of Dante’s room preparing to take my last breath. That thought alone twisted my insides.I opened the door to my room and stepped inside. The second it clicked shut behind me, I felt a thin layer of safety wrap around me. But even here, the walls felt like they had ears. I dropped myself on the bed and stared at the ceiling. The idea of quitting crept into my mind again, louder this time. Maybe I should tell

  • Under The Mafia’s Grip   7: Spot the traitor

DanteAnger swelled in me as I sat on the edge of the bed. My jaw tightened, and I pressed a palm against my thigh to numb the sting of pain that came crawling through my body from the wounds. The robe clung to me like a reminder of weakness, and I hated that word. Weak. That was not supposed to be me. Ethan had insisted I rest, and for a moment earlier, I had considered listening. But Laura’s presence had shattered that fragile thought. Her arrival was a force strong enough to pull me away from reason. If she were here, I could not afford to stay caged in the mansion.I leaned forward, staring at the floor but not seeing it. My thoughts churned like a storm. How did she know? How did the information reach her so quickly? The East Coast was far, and my men were not careless. Information like this did not travel without a hand pushing it. My teeth ground together as the suspicion pointed at only one person. "Luca!" He had always been a fan of Laura, speaking highly of her, praising he

  • Under The Mafia’s Grip   6: Caught in between.

Ethan’s POVThe knock at the door had been a lifeline. My chest had been tightening under the weight of Dante’s words, the casual way he had described killing his own father. Every second afterwards, silence had filled the room like smoke, suffocating, and I had no idea how to respond to him without stumbling into danger. Relief spread through me when the door creaked open and someone stepped in. Whoever it was, whatever reason they had for coming, it meant I didn’t have to answer him. Not yet.I stood rooted near the edge of the room, caught between my thoughts and the tension pressing down on me, until Dante’s voice slammed against my ears, dragging me back to reality."I told you to stay there. I kept you there to look after the business, who is there now?" His tone was thunderous, charged with a fury that didn’t need explanation. Rage coiled in his words, and the sight of him limping, wounded but still dangerous, only heightened the intimidation. The woman who had just walked in d

  • Under The Mafia’s Grip   5: Story Time!

DanteThe bright rays of the sun travelled through the window and landed directly on my eyes. I squinted in response to the light. I yawned, trying to stretch, and I was suddenly reminded of my health condition as pain travelled through my entire being. Memories from yesterday's event flashed through my mind and I could only chuckle. A thought suddenly crossed my mind. Ethan! He risked his life. That was unusual. I was too weak yesterday to talk about it and today, I made up my mind to talk about it. Just then, a faint knock, enough to jolt me from my reverie, sounded on the door, and I grunted as I tried to sit up. "Come in!" I said, clenching my teeth to numb the pain. Ethan walked in slowly. The expression on his face was the same as always. There was something about him that I didn't seem to understand. Something that always pulled me closer to him. "You are up so early. Did you get enough sleep at all?" He asked in a subtle tone and I could only respond with a cocky smile. The

  • Under The Mafia’s Grip   4: Price And Loyalty

~Ethan John~It was past midnight and I had sent the pictures I took of Dante’s associates to Mr. Vince, he wasn’t happy that I was not able to capture Dante’s face, since he was the main person we were after, I told him not to worry, there is still more time to do that. “Don’t worry, Mr. Vince. I will get his face soon. I have already learned about two of their hideouts, and I’m working on uncovering more. Also, just so you know, Dante’s younger than most think, he’s not as old as people assume. I’ll keep you posted.” I read the message I sent before deleting it, and just as I was settling in bed to go back to sleep, I heard voices from the opposite door. It was Dante’s room, I quickly stood up moved closer to the door and I strained my ears to listen.Luca’s voice came first, sharp and filled with irritation.“You shouldn’t have let him follow us, boss. I don’t trust him. He’s too curious for his own good.”I could hear Dante’s calm response, though it was laced with authority. “I
