MasukI lowered my head, trying to calm myself, but I couldn’t escape the reality that had just been revealed. I never imagined that my involvement in this case could drag David's name into it.
I hoped Harry didn’t know more than he let on. I hoped this was all just speculation. But the pounding of my heart said otherwise.
I stared at my laptop screen, trying to fo
I froze. The words echoed in my mind.'The only key.'It seemed I wasn't the only one. Rose could be the main key. Dr. John as well. Those words made it sound as though I played an important role in this case. But that wasn't the point.Everyone was looking for me.Mr. Thomas was searching for me because I was dangerous to them, yet at the same time, many people were looking for me because I was the "key" to what they wanted."The documents should have been enough to prove how evil Mr. Thomas is," I said. "So why is all of this so difficult?""It all comes back to those officials, Hanna. You know that, don't you?" Rose replied."You're right." I nodded.I stared blankly at the floor. The dim light cast long shadows across the cold tiles. The more I thought about it, the more I hated it.I didn't want to be anyone's key.I didn't want to be the reason people hunted and killed each other. I only wanted to find the truth. But apparently, the truth carried a price far greater than I had ever
I quickly followed behind her. We walked down the corridor and stopped in a dining room. A refrigerator stood against one of the walls.I headed straight for it."Hanna, slowly."I carefully pulled open the refrigerator door. The light inside immediately flickered on. Cold air brushed against my face. There was still some ready-to-eat food on the lower shelf. Several bottles of water. Some fruit.I immediately searched for a bag large enough to carry supplies. After finding one inside a kitchen cabinet, I unzipped it and began stuffing in anything that would last.Behind me, Rose stood with her back to me, gripping her pistol tightly.
Hanna's POV....................................................................Everything had spiraled out of control.I had been here for twenty-four hours now, locked inside the laboratory. I had opened every classified file and sent all of them to Harry. There had not been a single reply.Rose sat in silence, staring at the two remaining vials of poison inside the oven. Meanwhile, Dr. John had left this place twelve hours ago.We were living here without internet, phones, or television. David actually had a bedroom and a television somewhere in this house, and I knew well enough where those rooms were. But Rose had forbidden me from leaving the laboratory, even for a single step.Countless times, I had been tempted to walk out and check for myself.Maybe there was news about Harry.Maybe there was news from the police.Maybe there was something that could explain why he hadn't responded. But every time I stood up and approached the door, Rose's words echoed through my head again.
HARRY'S POV.......................................................................................................“Yes, sir? You wanted to see me?” I stood directly in front of him.The Chief of Police ended his phone call just as I closed the office door behind me. He let out a sigh and motioned for me to sit down.I pulled out the chair across from him and sat. My heart beat a little faster. Usually, if he called me directly to his office, it meant something important was going on.The Chief of Police folded his hands on top of the desk. His sharp gaze studied my face for several seconds before he finally spoke.“How much evidence did you get, Harry?”“A lot, sir. And I caught the suspect in the middle of a transaction.”I shifted slightly in my seat. My heart was still beating faster than usual. The Chief of Police kept his eyes on me before speaking again.“Do not continue this case.”I didn't answer. I simply stared at him, trying to make sure I hadn't misheard.“Let's stop at
DAVID'S POV.........................................................................................................................................Greece was actually a beautiful place.I had spent part of my childhood here with my mother. We once vacationed in a place called Santorini, a cliffside village painted white, with blue-domed churches and the most breathtaking sunsets I had ever seen. I had even learned Greek while I was here.Later, when I returned to America, I deliberately joined Greek communities just to continue learning their language. Not only that, I had once researched the best universities in Greece and seriously considered pursuing my medical studies here. Then something terrible happened.I let go of all those plans and lost hope.“Let me drive. You can come along,” I said to Yohan, the mysterious American.I didn't even know who his family was or what city he came from. My father had dumped him here. He lived as a spy, committing crimes in other people's cou
The words hung in the air, crushing the breath from my lungs. It took only a few words to freeze me in place.David is in Greece.Greece?Greece?"I'm sure it's hard for you to understand all of this," Dr. John said. Then he trailed off.Just like a doctor stepping out of an operating room, preparing to deliver bad news to a patient's family. And I wasn't expecting anything good.A second later, Dr. John spoke."I have to save him, Hanna. He's in danger."
I was still clutching the bag tightly, holding it as if I never wanted to let it go. With every passing second, my curiosity grew. Rose said this bag would be very useful once we reached our destination. The question was would we even get there? Would I reach that destination when David couldn’t ev
We walked down the corridor to the very end of the building. A tall brown door stood before us. Its surface was smooth and polished, with a silver metal handle that looked cold and untouched.Slowly, Mr. Albert took out
Rose became unsettling after my last conversation with her. The change was so obvious, as if she were confirming that my suspicions were true. And yet, strangely, I felt protected. There was a side of Rose that understood the situation better than I did.
3 more Hours.I sat in front of the large aquarium, letting the bluish light from inside the tank wash over my face. The water behind the glass looked calm, shimmering softly whenever the ceiling lights reflected on its
