Chapter 4

Author: Hazel Lake
I did not have any time to react to Luke’s words before Isla rushed into my ward in her hospital gown.

She suddenly threw herself next to my bed and grabbed my hand tightly as she sobbed, “Elly, I really didn’t mean to take Luke from you.

“I just didn’t want Rosie to be an illegitimate child. She’s still so young, and she has a congenital heart defect. I’m really afraid I won’t be able to take good care of her…”

Even though Isla sounded fragile and pitiful, she gripped my hand with an almost hostile intent.

Her fingernails left marks on my wrist.

The pain made me push her away.

It had been a very gentle push, but she staggered backwards.

She hit her head against the metal bed frame with a loud bang.

Luke and my parents were concerned.

“Isla, are you alright?”

My father cradled Isla’s head anxiously to check her injuries.

My mother teared up from anxiety.

“This is bad. You’re still fragile from giving birth a while ago.”

As she was still cradling Rosie, my mother could not hit me, so she glared fiercely at me.

“If anything happens to Isla, I’ll hate you forever.”

Luke’s expression darkened.

“Elly, how could you be this cruel to your own younger sister? How am I going to be confident enough to let you take care of Rosie?”

As he spoke, he carried Hope from the other baby cot.

I jolted as I heard him say, “Since you can’t take good care of the children, I’ll let Isla do that for both children.”

Luke’s abrupt movement startled Hope, and she started to wail.

During my pregnancy, he used to rub my tummy and say expectantly, “Baby, after you’re born, your daddy is going to treat you like a little princess, and treat your mommy like a queen.”

Luke did not just comfort Hope. He also threatened me coldly, “Elly, make your choice. Apologize to Isla, and you may take care of Rosie and Hope.

“If not, you’ll…”

“I’ll apologize.”

I was afraid that Luke would think that I was insincere.

I forced myself to stand up despite having just undergone a C-section as I stumbled over to Isla.

“I’m sorry.”

As I spoke, I slapped myself.

I felt the movement tugging the wound on my abdomen.

Just when I was about to pass out from the pain, I suddenly heard my mother’s laughter.

“I was right! Elly would endure anything for her child.”

I looked up in shock and saw all four of them standing and laughing.

My mother laughed smugly as she appeased Luke.

“Luke, don’t worry at all and focus on taking care of Isla as she completes her study abroad.

“With Hope on the line, Elly would not dare to ask for a divorce, and she would treat Rosie well.”

I quickly caught on.

It had all just been a trap for me. They had been trying to test my boundaries.

Because I had something to lose, I had walked right into their trap.

“Elly, don’t overthink this.”

Luke put down Hope and smugly helped me to my hospital bed.

“Isla is the mother of my child, but I can’t marry her. Rosie can’t call her mom either, so this is the only way I can make it up to her.

“But don’t worry, during my year abroad with Isla, I will keep a safe distance from her. I won’t make the same mistake for the third time.”

I could feel the warmth radiating from Luke’s palm as he tidied my hair. I felt like a fish trapped in the net.

On the day we parted, Luke took the divorce agreement from me. Three days later, we held Hope’s funeral. Luke buried Hope with me. When he realized that the tombstone only mentioned me as Hope’s sole parent, he smiled bitterly. However, he never asked if he could leave some words on Hope’s tombstone. After we left the cemetery, he passed me the signed divorce agreement. “I’ve revised some of the terms.”I had a rough readthrough. He had given me all of his money. “I’ve sent Peter away to another city. Darlene and Isla have been warned too, so even if they were released from prison, they would not cause any troubles to you.”After Luke updated me about everything, he suddenly laughed. “Elly, if I hadn’t hidden the truth from you the first time, would we have ended up differently from today?”Luke started with all the what-ifs. He did not tell me back then because he was afraid that I would feel even more betrayed. Hence, he hid it from me. However, things had

The day Luke made his promise to me, he got his legal team to send my mother into jail for coercing me into transferring my shares. The amount was huge, so my mother was sentenced to seven years behind bars. That agreement and debt were no longer valid. My father was also pressured by his company, and then he was fired. He could no longer land a good job. The house and car that Luke bought them were taken back as well. My father could not contact me, so he moved into a lousy inn with Isla. Every time they were about to fall asleep, gangsters would knock on their door and throw rotten eggs into their bedroom. With all those incidents, no inns dared to take them in. Isla was furious. With Rosie in her arms, she went to the Anderson family. She forced Luke’s parents to recognize Rosie as their granddaughter, and they agreed to that. However, during the welcome party, Luke took out a paternity test before everyone. Rosie was not even Luke’s child. Luke had found i

I felt as though I had a really, really long dream. In my dream, Luke was still young, just like when I first met him. He was holding the hand of an adorable young girl. They both waved at me from a distance away. I kept running toward them, but no matter how hard I tried, I could not reach them. I was tired and upset. Just when I collapsed onto the ground and sobbed, I heard a young girl’s voice. “Mommy, don’t cry. I’ll still see you in the future.”Young Luke also sighed as he bade me goodbye. He said, “Elly, I’m sorry. Please don’t forgive him.“From the first time he made that mistake, he’s no longer the same person as I am.” I shot up suddenly. The dream was over. I was lying on the hospital bed with Luke by my side. When he saw that I had woken up, he quickly came over with a glass of water. “Elly, you’re finally awake. You’ve been in a coma for three days. The doctors said that you’ll be thirsty after you wake up. Drink some water first, drink it slowly…”

Luke hesitated. For the past two years, even though I said that I had forgiven him, his previous act of infidelity had left me scarred. It was because I had only found out that he had cheated on me from the scratch marks on his back. Hence, after we reconciled, every time he came home, he would take off his top for me to examine his body. Even so, every time we were intimate, I would push him away from time to time. Luke thought that with the addition of a child, there would be a new focus in our lives. Then, I would be able to forget the past. Hence, he agreed to my mother’s request. He bought a flight ticket for my mother to return to the country. A month later, I told him, “Luke, I’m pregnant.” Everything went according to plan. A month ago, after Isla gave birth to Rosie, Luke had planned to shut her up by giving her money. However, my mother said, “Luke, Isla’s still young. She can’t be a single mother.“How about after Elly gives birth, you bring both child

Luke’s hands were covered in blood as he collapsed onto the floor. He could not tell whether the blood was from Hope or me. While he was deep in his sorrow, he suddenly recalled his happy past with me. He had first met me in our freshman year in college. It had been love at first sight. To pursue me, he did every silly thing that he once deemed stupid. He sent me a bouquet that contained 999 roses. He set off fireworks that spelled out our names 99 times. Every day, he would wait for me at my dorm to send me breakfast, fruits, and gifts. He pursued me for six whole months. I used to be very insecure due to my parents’ favoritism, but I was so touched that I finally agreed to be his girlfriend. The moment I agreed to be his girlfriend, he swore that he would never break my trust. From that day onwards, he only had my photos on his social media accounts. All his bank card pins were my birthday. All of our memories of past happiness flashed in his mind. He sa

Luke was stunned for two seconds. Then, he stumbled over as he hesitantly reached out. He wanted to feel if Hope was still breathing. However, he pulled his hand back in fear. He asked with a shaking voice, “How is that possible? I only left for less than 20 minutes, why is Hope dead?“Elly, you must be lying to me…”I ignored him. The doctors’ words echoed in my head. “Luke, you said that Rosie was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect immediately after she was born. “Why didn’t anyone retrieve Hope’s results today?“Why?” Tears streamed down my cheeks. “You were so busy laying out a trap for me, lying to me, and trying to make Rosie a legitimate child. That’s why no one went to take Hope’s medical report.” Luke’s face turned pale from my questions. His lips quivered for a long time before finally asking, “Why did she die?”“She has a congenital heart defect, and she cried herself to death.“Luke, you’re the one who made her cry. “You killed her.” Luke wa
