Chapter 2

Autor: Holly
The next morning, I opened my bedroom door and found a giant stuffed reindeer in the living room.

My parents were circling the stuffed reindeer, unable to contain their excitement. "Claire has no idea we got this for her birthday. Just wait until she wakes up and sees it. She's going to be so excited!"

Just then, Claire walked out of her bedroom.

As soon as she saw the stuffed reindeer, she practically jumped for joy. She threw her arms around Mom and Dad and exclaimed, "I only mentioned it once! I can't believe you actually bought it for me! I know how expensive these are!"

Mom and Dad gently stroked Claire's hair and smiled.

"Of course we remember what you tell us."

I stood frozen in my bedroom doorway, watching the three of them laughing and enjoying themselves.

Apparently, my parents remembered things perfectly well. So why could they never remember that I needed a new monitor for my art, no matter how many times I said it?

At that moment, Mom shoved her phone into my hand. "What are you waiting for? Hurry up and take a picture of us!"

I took the phone. "Okay."

On the screen, the three of them stood huddled together, while I remained behind the camera.

After that, Claire looked at the enormous stuffed reindeer and frowned. "Where are we even going to put something this big?"

Mom hesitated for a moment, then looked at me.

"Annie, your bedroom is bigger," she said. "Why don't you switch rooms with Claire?"

At that, Claire gave me an expectant look. "Would that be okay? I've actually wanted to switch rooms with you for ages, but I just didn't know how to bring it up. Your room gets more sunlight and has so much more space. I really like it."

My hands balled into fists at my sides. I'd already decided to leave, but my flight wasn't until the next day. So, my bedroom was packed with design sketches and all my belongings.

"I have a lot of work stuff in my room—"

I thought they'd at least hear me out, but Dad cut me off before I could finish speaking. "They're just sketches. You can work in the living room."

"You took more than your share before you were even born. That's why Claire gets a headache just from being out in the cold. You're her big sister. Is it really so much to ask that you switch rooms with her?" Mom asked, frowning.

Claire bit her lip, looking hesitant. "It's okay, Mom and Dad. Annie has a real talent for design. I don't want to get in the way of her work just because of something so trivial."

Suddenly, Mom raised her voice. "What talent? She's been working on designs for years, and what does she have to show for it?"

Dad tugged Mom's sleeve, trying to stop her.

Claire looked like she was about to cry, and I found that ironic. It was always the same act. Whenever we argued, she'd put on that wounded expression and make me look like the bully.

I nodded silently. I was leaving in a day anyway. It was only a bedroom. What did it matter?

Claire's face lit up with joy the moment I nodded, and she even volunteered to help me pack.

When she saw the Maison Aurora gown design on my computer, she was so stunned that she could barely speak.

"Annie, this is gorgeous! There's a design competition coming up. Would you let me put my name on this design and enter it as my own?"

I whipped around and shot her a cold look. "No."

I must have raised my voice, because Mom and Dad came in to see what was happening.

"What's going on in here?" they asked.

Claire looked a little uneasy as she explained, "Nothing. I just thought Annie's design was beautiful, so I told her how much I liked it. I didn't expect her to react like that."

Mom's expression darkened at once. She grabbed the mouse and started clicking randomly. "Let me see what kind of design has you making such a fuss!"

I lunged forward to stop her.

In the middle of the scuffle, Claire stepped between Mom and me and swung her arm, knocking the computer off the desk. It hit the floor, and the screen went black.

Claire quickly stepped back and stared at me, unsure of what to do.

Mom, on the other hand, froze. When she saw how angry I was, she said coldly, "It's just a computer. Don't scare your sister like that. I'll buy you another one tomorrow."

The computer itself didn't matter. What mattered was the unsaved data I had on it.

Seeing how upset I was, Mom took Claire by the hand and led her out of the room. Neither of them apologized, not even once.

I slowly crouched and checked the memory card, my hands trembling.

Fortunately, the memory card was still intact. I could recover the data once I got to the training site.

A few months passed, and the competition Mira had told me about finally took place as scheduled. To my surprise, it was being held in the city where my pack was based. As I stepped off the plane and returned to that familiar city, I felt a strange mix of emotions. The venue was lavishly decorated, and many renowned werewolf designers had gathered to compete. With my designs in hand, I followed Mira to our seats. When I looked up, I spotted Claire in the crowd. She was dressed in a beautiful gown, with my parents standing beside her.Claire noticed me, too, and came over, bringing Mom and Dad with her."Annie, you're competing too? I've missed you so much these past few months while you've been away from home."I stepped away from her outstretched hand and looked at my parents."Didn't you say that designing was a waste of time? Then why did you let Claire study it? And why did you bring her here to the competition?"Mom's face turned pale, and for a moment, she couldn't find

From then on, I settled into a routine at the training center, splitting my time between my room and the studio and devoting myself to my designs. That peaceful routine didn't last long. One day, Mira sent me a message."Annie, your parents are here. They say they're taking you home. Come downstairs and see them."My heart sank. I hurried downstairs at once. The moment Mom saw me, she rushed over and pulled me into a tight embrace, her eyes red with worry."You're only 18, and this place has tricked you into coming here. Do you have any idea how worried we've been?"Dad stood beside her, his jaw clenched. He turned to the two local law enforcement officers."I'm Annie's father. Could you please help us take her home?"Embarrassed, I glanced around. Fortunately, everyone else was in class, so there was no crowd of trainees watching us.The officers nodded and asked Mira to show them the center's paperwork.Mira remained composed as she handed over the relevant paperwork. Mom's frantic voice came through the speaker the moment I answered."Annie, why are you only answering now? Do you have any idea how worried your dad and I have been? You just took off without saying a single word! Do you know how worried we were?"I clenched the bedsheets and said nothing. Then Dad spoke, his voice heavy with reproach. "Book a flight and come home right away," he ordered. "Claire's been worried about you all day. She hasn't even been able to eat properly. Whatever the disagreement was, couldn't you have talked it out instead of just walking away?"After a moment, his tone softened slightly."If you left because of Claire, then when you come back, I'll have her apologize to you. How about that?"I listened in silence as the warmth I'd only just begun to feel slowly faded. Not once had they genuinely asked if I was okay. They didn't even understand why I'd left home.To them, I was just throwing a tantrum. They thought all it would take was a little coaxing for

I arrived in Weychester early in the morning. After getting some rest, I headed to the training center.I'd kept my phone on silent throughout the flight. Once the plane landed, I checked my phone and found a dozen or so missed calls. I couldn't quite sort out how I felt.Still, I didn't dwell on them. I had already made up my mind to leave, so I tried not to let myself overthink things. That home no longer had much to do with me.When I pushed open the doors to the center, I was greeted by an elaborate welcome celebration. Confetti drifted down around me as the woman at the front stepped forward and held out her hand."Annie, welcome to the team."She handed me a bouquet with a warm smile. "I'm Mira Gallagher, and I'll be your mentor from now on. If you ever have questions about your work or need advice on your designs, you can always come to me."Wasn't your birthday a few days ago? I talked it over with the others, and we decided to put this welcome celebration together for

Mom thought she'd misheard Dad. "Huh?" she asked. "What did you say?"Dad seemed unsure how to explain, so he tried again."Annie isn't home, and some of her things are missing. Do you think she went out because she was upset?"Mom set the medicine and cake she'd bought for Claire on the table, looking displeased."Upset? What does she have to be upset about? We only took Claire out to get her injury treated."As she spoke, she walked farther into the house. When she realized I wasn't there, a trace of panic crept into her voice."Maybe she just went out for a while," she said uneasily. "She'll be back soon.""Don't worry," Dad reassured her. "I'll call her in a bit."Claire's eyes turned slightly red, and she spoke up at just the right moment."Mom, this is all my fault. If I hadn't fallen and hurt myself, Annie wouldn't have been so upset that she left.""It's okay," Mom said, patting Claire's back to comfort her. "This isn't your fault. Your sister is old enough to know

A few days earlier, the Moon Goddess herself had told me in a dream that Kevin was my fated mate. He was heir to an ancient family in the pack. Known for his cold, distant demeanor, he rarely showed up at pack gatherings. I'd planned to find Kevin and reject the bond before I left. I hadn't expected to run into him so soon. I stepped forward to explain things to him, but he walked right past me and went straight to Claire. Kevin lowered his head slightly, his gaze softening as he looked at Claire. A beat later, Claire lifted her head. She looked sincere as she said, "I'm sorry, Annie, but Kevin can't be your fated mate. He's in love with me. If you let me have him, I'll buy you a new computer or give you all my allowance."I stood there in a daze, remembering how Claire had been away from home so often for a while. Whenever she returned, she'd spend hours on the phone in her bedroom. Mom hurried over to me. "Annie, you can't force someone to love you. Why don't you take
