Chapter 1

"Where did you get that death certificate? Under some shady overpass?"

My mother, Agatha Carper, pointed a finger right in the head nurse's face and started berating her. The reporters practically shoved their cameras into the nurse's face.

But the nurse didn't back down an inch. She looked coldly at the impeccably dressed woman standing before her. "Mrs. Lowe, this is an official certificate issued by the city. It bears the official government seal.

"If you don't believe me, you're welcome to call them right now and verify the certificate number."

Agatha's red-polished finger froze in midair. Then she let out a deeply contemptuous laugh.

"That brat sure has some nerve. She'd go as far as playing dead just to get out of donating blood to her sister. How much did she pay you to help her put on this little act?"

The reporters instantly caught the story's explosive angle and clicked their shutters even more frantically.

"Mrs. Lowe, does your biological daughter often resort to such extreme measures to avoid responsibility?"

"You've devoted everything to your adopted daughter, Bonnie, yet your own daughter, Julia, is so cold-blooded. How do you feel about that?"

Agatha turned to the cameras, her eyes instantly filling with tears. She lifted a handkerchief and dabbed delicately at the corners of her eyes.

"I'm sorry you all have to witness our family drama play out like this. Julia grew up in the countryside, so she can be a little extreme. She's always thought I favor Bonnie, but how could I? They're both my daughters.

"Bonnie has a rare blood disorder, and Julia's blood type is the only one that matches hers. I only asked her to donate a little blood. It's not like I was going to take her life.

"How could she make up such a cruel lie and curse herself with her death?"

I floated near the ceiling of the hospital corridor, my translucent body passing through the harsh fluorescent lights. I watched my mother sob in front of the cameras as she accused me of things I had never done.

A month ago, it had happened right here, too. Agatha had people pin me down in a blood-draw chair while a thick needle was shoved into my vein.

I cried and begged her to stop, telling her I felt like the world was spinning around me and that my heart ached badly.

At that time, she covered her nose with the same handkerchief. She looked at my pale face with nothing but disgust. "Quit the act. The doctor said taking 800 cc won't kill you. Bonnie is in the ER, waiting for your blood!"

Steady footsteps came from the end of the corridor. The crowd automatically parted to make way. My fiance, Jonah Samson, walked over alongside my biological brother, Zack Lowe.

Jonah wore a perfectly tailored designer suit. His eyes, seen through his gold-rimmed glasses, held their usual cool, rational detachment.

"Is Julia done messing around?" he asked calmly, utterly devoid of emotion, though a note of condescension peeked through.

Zack strode forward and snatched the death certificate from the nurse. He barely even read it before he tore it cleanly in half. "I know you're hiding somewhere nearby, Julia!"

He buzzed around, his voice frigid. "You think you can scare us with a fake certificate? Bonnie is in the ICU right now, fighting for her life because she lost too much blood. If you're still human, get out here and face us!"

The nurse was shaking with anger. She bent down to pick up the torn certificate from the floor.

"You people are unbelievable! Julia Lowe was forcibly drained of blood here on the 25th of last month, which caused severe complications. She collapsed alone in the alley behind the hospital.

"By the time she was brought to the emergency room, she was already suffering from multiple organ failure.

"The community authorities had to step in and arrange for her body to be picked up because you, so-called family members, couldn't even be bothered to answer the damn phone!"

Jonah frowned slightly. He lowered his head and adjusted his cufflinks. "Nurse, you can be held legally responsible for spreading misinformation. Do you know that?

"Julia has a 150-thousand-dollar allowance deposited into her account every month. There's no way she could've died alone in an alley."

He turned to his assistant, Elijah Thorne. "Check her recent spending records and freeze all of her bank cards. If she wants to play this disappearing act, she'll have to suffer a little out there.

"I'm certain she'll come crawling back to apologize within three days."

I hovered silently in the air, watching the absolute confidence on Jonah's face.

He had always been so full of himself. He thought I couldn't live without him and that every act of defiance of mine was just my way of getting his attention.

Little did he know, I hadn't touched a single penny of that allowance. Bonnie had taken my supplementary card long ago to buy limited-edition designer handbags.

Ultimately, Agatha couldn't escape the law.The police uncovered evidence that she had illegally confined me and taken my blood over a long period without my consent. She was formally arrested and charged with causing my death through battery. While in custody, she lost her mind. She sat facing the wall, talking to herself, calling my name, and promising to buy me strawberry cake every day.Zack, on the other hand, was convicted as an accomplice and sentenced to several years in prison. The once-untouchable Lowe family empire crumbled overnight. As for Bonnie, her condition rapidly deteriorated once she lost me, her walking blood bank.Without Agatha's protection or Jonah's favoritism, she was left lying in an ordinary hospital ward, suffering through the pain day after day.She cried and begged the doctors to save her, but no one would ever drain another person dry for her again. She would spend the rest of her life waiting for death to come, trapped in endless pain and fear.J

After identifying my body, Jonah wandered around like a lost soul. He didn't return to the office or return to the hospital to see Bonnie. Instead, he went to the home he and I once shared. It was a sprawling luxury apartment in the heart of the city, furnished with obscene extravagance.Jonah opened the door. The apartment was terrifyingly quiet. He headed straight into the master bedroom and started tearing through everything. He searched every cabinet and drawer, desperately trying to find some trace that I had ever existed in that enormous home. After searching every corner, he realized I barely had anything around. The walk-in closet was packed with the season's limited-edition designer clothes. They were all things he had bought for Bonnie because she said she liked this closet.Meanwhile, my clothes consisted of only a few faded workout clothes, crammed into a corner. The vanity was covered with expensive skincare products. Those were Bonnie's, too. My one little bottle of

Agatha went mad. She broke free from the female officers' grasp and lunged toward the autopsy table. "Wake up, Julia!"She shook my lifeless body violently, tears and snot streaming down her face. "I'm sorry! I'll never take your blood again! Open your eyes and look at me! Gosh, you've always been such a good girl!"Come on, wake up. I'll buy you your favorite strawberry cake!"The police officers stepped forward and dragged her away. She threw herself onto the floor, screaming and rolling around, acting nothing like a dignified socialite."Let me go! I'm taking my daughter home! You liars! My daughter isn't dead!"I watched her lose her mind and found the whole thing almost laughable. The maternal love I had once craved so deeply when I was alive finally came to me under these circumstances.Alas, I didn't care for it anymore.Jonah sank onto the cold tiled floor. He neither tried to stop Agatha nor even look at Zack. His gaze was hollow as he stared at the ceiling. Memories ca

At the forensic center of the police headquarters, the cold white lights cast an eerie glow over the stainless-steel autopsy table. The morgue was freezing.Agatha was half-carried inside by two female officers. Her legs were so weak that she could barely stand on her own. Zack followed behind, his face pale and his lips trembling uncontrollably.Jonah came in last. He still wore the same designer custom suit. Only now, his once perfectly straight tie hung slightly askew. His eyes were fixed on the black body bag lying on the table in the middle of the room. He stared at the thick plastic sheeting, unable to look away. The forensic pathologist stood beside the table, his expression impassive. "Is the deceased's family all here?"Jonah said nothing. He simply nodded stiffly. The forensic pathologist reached out and grabbed the body bag's zipper. The harsh sound echoed through the empty room.As the black plastic was slowly pulled open, a skeletal body was exposed to the cold air.

Agatha started another livestream. She sat beside Bonnie's hospital bed, held up her phone, and spoke to the camera."Everyone, look at this. This is the organ donation form my daughter Julia signed."She shoved the signed organ donation form right up to the camera. "She'd rather donate her organs to strangers than give her blood to her sister! She's doing this just to get back at me, to punish this family!"The comments in the livestream exploded."She's absolutely vile. How can someone like that even deserve to live?""Someone should check whether this donation form is fake, too.""Don't be too sad, Agatha. We support you in bringing her back!"Bonnie let out a couple of perfectly timed coughs beside her. She leaned weakly against Agatha's shoulder, her face pale. "Mom, don't blame Julia. Maybe she's just scared of the pain."Her fake innocent act only added more fuel to the fire. The viewers' anger boiled over.Just as Agatha was basking in the rush of having the entire int

Jonah stood frozen in place. His eyes were locked on the shirt covered in dried blood. Not a single noise around him made it into his ears. The scavenger's trembling voice echoed through the cramped metal shack."Medical waste dumpster… I found the card."Those words kept repeating in Jonah's mind, scraping at his nerves.Agatha covered her nose and backed out of the room in aversion."This is disgusting! Julia would stoop to anything just to hide from us, wouldn't she? She probably splashed some chicken blood on the shirt and tossed it in the trash, thinking she could fool us."She's been pulling these fake-death stunts since she was a kid for fun!"Zack sneered. He nudged the black supplementary card off the ground with the tip of his shoe."No wonder she threw the card away. She's determined to drag this out. Fine. Let's see how long she can survive out there without a penny to her name."Jonah was silent. He slowly stepped forward, ignoring the filth on the floor. He then
