Chapter 3

Author: Somniferum
Time flew by, minute after minute. The clock on the wall kept ticking. The sky had darkened outside.

Jonah's phone sat untouched on the coffee table. His usually composed expression had begun to show a trace of barely concealed impatience.

He picked up the coffee and took a sip, but his frown only deepened. The coffee had gone cold.

Normally, by this time, I would've already replaced it with a warm latte. He remembered that I hated the bitter taste of coffee, yet he had grown used to the warmth I placed beside him at the same time every day.

Zack paced back and forth around the room. "It's already 8:00 pm. How has Julia still not made a move? She couldn't have actually run off to some godforsaken backwater to hide, could she?"

Agatha sat beside the bed, massaging Bonnie's calves. She let out a cold laugh.

"Someone who's been used to a life of luxury could never handle going back to living in some backwater. She's probably been taken in by some shady man.

"I swear, those bad habits she picked up growing up in the countryside will never die."

Bonnie timidly tugged at Agatha's sleeve. "Mom, don't say that about Julia. What if something really did happen to her? You mentioned the head nurse sounded certain when she said it. I can't help feeling uneasy."

Jonah slammed his coffee cup down on the coffee table. It landed with a dull thud.

The entire room fell silent.

"What could happen to her?"

His voice remained unperturbed, but he spoke noticeably faster now.

"She's just figured out that we're desperate for her blood, so she's playing mind games with us. If she wants to play, I'll play along until the very end."

He picked up his phone and called Elijah. "Get in touch with a few media outlets we have connections with.

"Put out stories about how Julia faked her death certificate, how she refused to support her family, and how she abandoned her seriously ill sister.

"Pay for those topics to go viral. I want everyone in the city to know her true colors."

Elijah paused in hesitation. "Mr. Samson, don't you think that's a little too much? She's your fiancee, after all. If the public backlash gets out of control—"

"Just do as I say," he said coldly, interrupting him. "She started it. She can't blame me for hitting back twice as hard. Only when she's cornered will she realize who she can truly depend on."

I floated in the air, watching Jonah coldly issue the order to destroy my reputation. Strangely, I felt unbothered. There was no anger or sadness, just a profound sense of emptiness.

I had to give it to him. He always used that supposedly rational mind of his to calculate exactly how to crush my pride. He thought that if he destroyed all my options, I would come crawling back to his feet.

Unbeknownst to him, I had already been through the kind of desperation he could never imagine.

Less than 30 minutes later, the backlash online snowballed.

Someone edited the footage of Agatha causing a scene in the emergency room and uploaded it online. It came with an inflammatory headline.

"Heiress Fakes Her Own Death Certificate to Get Attention, Even Going So Far as to Curse Herself Dead!"

The comments were filled with abuse directed at me.

"What an evil woman. She doesn't even care if her own sister lives or dies."

"Agatha must have the worst luck in the world to end up with such an ingrate."

"Quick, dox her! Hold her down until she gives blood!"

Zack read through the comments on his phone, a satisfied smile curling at the corner of his mouth.

"Let's see where she hides now. Maybe she'll finally regret it when the internet tears her apart, and she's too scared to go outside."

Just then, Jonah's phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, and his eyes instantly sharpened. It was Elijah.

When he answered, his voice carried a hint of smug condescension. "So? Has she finally decided to use her bank card?"

Elijah sounded urgent. "We found her! Her supplementary card was used ten minutes ago near a scrap collection yard in one of the run-down neighborhoods."

Jonah shot to his feet. His gold-rimmed glasses caught the light. "Get the car ready."

Ultimately, Agatha couldn't escape the law.The police uncovered evidence that she had illegally confined me and taken my blood over a long period without my consent. She was formally arrested and charged with causing my death through battery. While in custody, she lost her mind. She sat facing the wall, talking to herself, calling my name, and promising to buy me strawberry cake every day.Zack, on the other hand, was convicted as an accomplice and sentenced to several years in prison. The once-untouchable Lowe family empire crumbled overnight. As for Bonnie, her condition rapidly deteriorated once she lost me, her walking blood bank.Without Agatha's protection or Jonah's favoritism, she was left lying in an ordinary hospital ward, suffering through the pain day after day.She cried and begged the doctors to save her, but no one would ever drain another person dry for her again. She would spend the rest of her life waiting for death to come, trapped in endless pain and fear.J

After identifying my body, Jonah wandered around like a lost soul. He didn't return to the office or return to the hospital to see Bonnie. Instead, he went to the home he and I once shared. It was a sprawling luxury apartment in the heart of the city, furnished with obscene extravagance.Jonah opened the door. The apartment was terrifyingly quiet. He headed straight into the master bedroom and started tearing through everything. He searched every cabinet and drawer, desperately trying to find some trace that I had ever existed in that enormous home. After searching every corner, he realized I barely had anything around. The walk-in closet was packed with the season's limited-edition designer clothes. They were all things he had bought for Bonnie because she said she liked this closet.Meanwhile, my clothes consisted of only a few faded workout clothes, crammed into a corner. The vanity was covered with expensive skincare products. Those were Bonnie's, too. My one little bottle of

Agatha went mad. She broke free from the female officers' grasp and lunged toward the autopsy table. "Wake up, Julia!"She shook my lifeless body violently, tears and snot streaming down her face. "I'm sorry! I'll never take your blood again! Open your eyes and look at me! Gosh, you've always been such a good girl!"Come on, wake up. I'll buy you your favorite strawberry cake!"The police officers stepped forward and dragged her away. She threw herself onto the floor, screaming and rolling around, acting nothing like a dignified socialite."Let me go! I'm taking my daughter home! You liars! My daughter isn't dead!"I watched her lose her mind and found the whole thing almost laughable. The maternal love I had once craved so deeply when I was alive finally came to me under these circumstances.Alas, I didn't care for it anymore.Jonah sank onto the cold tiled floor. He neither tried to stop Agatha nor even look at Zack. His gaze was hollow as he stared at the ceiling. Memories ca

At the forensic center of the police headquarters, the cold white lights cast an eerie glow over the stainless-steel autopsy table. The morgue was freezing.Agatha was half-carried inside by two female officers. Her legs were so weak that she could barely stand on her own. Zack followed behind, his face pale and his lips trembling uncontrollably.Jonah came in last. He still wore the same designer custom suit. Only now, his once perfectly straight tie hung slightly askew. His eyes were fixed on the black body bag lying on the table in the middle of the room. He stared at the thick plastic sheeting, unable to look away. The forensic pathologist stood beside the table, his expression impassive. "Is the deceased's family all here?"Jonah said nothing. He simply nodded stiffly. The forensic pathologist reached out and grabbed the body bag's zipper. The harsh sound echoed through the empty room.As the black plastic was slowly pulled open, a skeletal body was exposed to the cold air.

Agatha started another livestream. She sat beside Bonnie's hospital bed, held up her phone, and spoke to the camera."Everyone, look at this. This is the organ donation form my daughter Julia signed."She shoved the signed organ donation form right up to the camera. "She'd rather donate her organs to strangers than give her blood to her sister! She's doing this just to get back at me, to punish this family!"The comments in the livestream exploded."She's absolutely vile. How can someone like that even deserve to live?""Someone should check whether this donation form is fake, too.""Don't be too sad, Agatha. We support you in bringing her back!"Bonnie let out a couple of perfectly timed coughs beside her. She leaned weakly against Agatha's shoulder, her face pale. "Mom, don't blame Julia. Maybe she's just scared of the pain."Her fake innocent act only added more fuel to the fire. The viewers' anger boiled over.Just as Agatha was basking in the rush of having the entire int

Jonah stood frozen in place. His eyes were locked on the shirt covered in dried blood. Not a single noise around him made it into his ears. The scavenger's trembling voice echoed through the cramped metal shack."Medical waste dumpster… I found the card."Those words kept repeating in Jonah's mind, scraping at his nerves.Agatha covered her nose and backed out of the room in aversion."This is disgusting! Julia would stoop to anything just to hide from us, wouldn't she? She probably splashed some chicken blood on the shirt and tossed it in the trash, thinking she could fool us."She's been pulling these fake-death stunts since she was a kid for fun!"Zack sneered. He nudged the black supplementary card off the ground with the tip of his shoe."No wonder she threw the card away. She's determined to drag this out. Fine. Let's see how long she can survive out there without a penny to her name."Jonah was silent. He slowly stepped forward, ignoring the filth on the floor. He then
