Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Triple Jasmine
When I got home from the party, it was already past midnight.

My whole body ached, but my heart hurt the most. My pillowcase was soaked by my tears.

I fell for Luca at my 18th birthday party. Back then, Leonardo was still the Don of the Costa Famiglia. Luca was 25 years old and Leonardo's Underboss.

As I was cutting my cake, the sound of a gunshot rang out. A bullet lodged in Papa's heart. Another came flying at me.

Just as I thought I was going to die, I was shoved onto the floor. It was Luca lying atop me. He'd taken the bullet for me in his back.

Blood sprayed onto my dress. It was warm and sticky.

Luca was hospitalized for a month. The bullet had been less than an inch away from his heart.

A few days after my birthday party, Papa passed away. Before he died, he called Luca and me to his study. Taking both our hands, he placed them atop each other.

"Luca, I'm entrusting Elena to you. I want you to swear that you'll protect her forever and never betray her. If not, I will make sure you regret it, even if I have to climb out of hell to punish you," threatened Papa, his voice trembling.

Getting on one knee, Luca kissed the back of my hand and swore before Papa that he'd love me with all his heart, forever.

Papa smiled and nodded. After transferring control of the Costa Famiglia into Luca's hands, he took his last breath.

Luca proposed to me after Papa's funeral. I said yes.

After our marriage, we remained hopelessly in love. While our enemies were persecuting him, I got shot in my spine trying to protect him. From then onward, I was confined to my wheelchair, nothing more than a decorative Madre.

I thought our loving relationship would continue. Alas, a man's heart is the most fickle thing.

The sound of a lock turning clicked behind me. Luca walked into the bedroom. I did not move.

"Elena, you must be exhausted by tonight's events. I'll give you a massage," mumbled Luca. He embraced me from the back, fingers gliding down my shoulders. Clearly, he was asking for something.

In the past, I would've turned around and hugged him back, thanking him for being so considerate. However, all I felt now was disgust.

One week ago, I fully recovered from my spinal injury. I was about to head to the wine cellar to get some celebratory alcohol when Sofia took my hand for the first time, asking me to teach her to draw.

Before that, she'd always complained of my wheelchair being in the way. Sofia was disdainful of my inability to get along with Luca's friends and of my inability to take her riding or skiing. As a result, she'd never wanted to deepen our bond.

I hadn't stood up that day, as I was pretending that I hadn't regained the ability to walk. Yet, Sofia was enthusiastic in a way she'd never been.

I didn't read too much into it and just thought she'd finally rediscovered her love for me. Warmth rose in my heart. I even teared up, thinking that we'd all be happy again.

However, I was wrong.

While Sofia was in the bathroom, I headed to the cellar to take my wine when I heard scandalous noises coming from the cellar. At that moment, I couldn't tell whether it was devastation or fury from being betrayed that struck me first.

Sofia found me. Thinking I hadn't heard anything, she hastily led me away. Watching the anxious expression on her face, I understood. Sofia loved her personal tutor more than me.

Ever since that day, I stopped dreaming about sharing the truth of my recovery with them. I agreed to my Nonna's request and booked a plane ticket back to our hometown, Sicily. I didn't want Luca or Sofia anymore.

Yet, the man I no longer wanted was murmuring into my ear, "Elena, I love you…"

The sound of his moans from my memory suddenly overlapped with what he was saying now, echoing in my head.

I lurched upward and shoved Luca away.

He let out a pained groan and fell off the bed, knocking his head against the corner of the bedside table.

For a moment, I was taken aback. On instinct, I nearly reached out to help him. In the end, I didn't move.

Luca had picked up on my internal struggle and hesitation. Instead of getting mad, he pulled me into his arms.

"Are you feeling ill?"

I shook my head and replied, "I had a nightmare."

As though something had suddenly popped into his mind, Luca's arms tightened around me, looking extremely anxious. "Believe me, Elena. To each other, Celia and I are nothing more than a parent and a personal tutor. Please don't misunderstand us."

Parent and tutor? To him, was it appropriate for a tutor and her student's parent to get down and dirty in the wine cellar?

My heart was exhausted by his antics. I no longer wanted to pay him any attention. I replied coldly, "Got it. You're probably tired as well. Go to sleep."

I didn't spare him another glance and lay down with my back to him. He mumbled, "I love you, Elena. I truly love you. Never leave me, alright? Without you, I'll die."

Tears trickled down my cheeks and stained my pillowcase. I really wanted to ask him why he'd betray me if he loved me.

At this point, there was no need to see each other again, Luca.

While I did think it was possible that they'd find me, I hadn't expected them to come so fast. Luca's hands were locked around my arm with a vice-like grip. He begged me to forgive him, but I wasn't moved in the slightest, because I knew that there could be no second chances. I pushed him off me and pulled my gun out, loading it swiftly. Holding it against his forehead, I said impatiently, "How many times do I have to tell you, Luca? We're over!""No, no way! It's not over between us … You said your love for me would never waver. We've got a daughter together as well. We were going to travel to all the most romantic destinations in the world and live out the gorgeous future we'd envisioned for each other." His gaze was filled with pain, but there was a stubborn glint in his eyes. I fired at the ground near his foot, hoping that it would wake him up from his trance. Luca was utterly dumbfounded. He stepped backward on instinct. "You … How dare you fire at me? You never pointe

I hadn't seen Luca or Sofia in a while. I couldn't believe how pathetic they looked now. As Don Romano, Luca had always seemed at ease and in control. However, he appeared haggard, and his eyes were bloodshot. Sofia had always been clean and sweet. Wherever she went, she was always the center of attention, like a little princess. Now, she was as haggard as Luca, looking like a sack of bones. I hadn't wanted to speak to him, but they unexpectedly leapt over and hugged me. Luca buried his face into my neck and sobbed, "Elena, I love you! Why did you leave us? Don't you know that I can't live without you? Answer me, Elena!" "Why don't you want me anymore, Mom? I miss you so much." Salvador stumbled backward, nervous and terrified. He didn't even know where to look. Frowning, I shoved them off me. "We've got nothing to do with each other now, Luca. Don't touch me." Luca was stunned into silence for a few moments. Then, he regained his composure and forced a smile, saying, "

That day onward, Salvador came to me frequently. He showed me his drawings and essays while I lent him books and art pieces. Salvador had a heart that was bursting out of his chest with the desire to go far. He knew I'd come from the distant lands of Aldaria, so he liked asking me a bunch of questions about Aldaria. Every time I spoke about the steel mills, cars, ferries, and planes, his eyes glowed with longing. The light in his gray eyes grew the more we talked. It pained me. How absurd. While I had been letting something as pointless as love keep me up at night, a boy was doing mental math in an attempt to increase the thickness of tomorrow's bread in my hometown. We lived in the same era, but it was as though decades separated us. Sometimes, I asked Salvador to bring me around. As the sun made its daily trek through the sky, we walked through the misty valleys and golden fields. My peaceful life went on. Sometimes, my friends would send me letters telling me about how L

After returning to Sisse, a branch of the Costa Famiglia sent assassins over to murder me out of jealousy for how I'd inherited Nonna's Famiglia. I was injured, but none of them were fatal wounds. After a week in bed recovering, I was as good as new. Nonna told me that I had just returned from Aldaria, so I had to be ruthless in order to establish my power. "Under your leadership, I hope that the Sissean branch of the Costa Famiglia rids itself of our underworld ties. Times are changing. You must do a lot of philanthropy, Elena. If we let the people eyeing your position seize the opportunity, our Famiglia will be plunged into endless darkness. We'll be destroyed." Indeed, times had changed. If I ruled as those who came before me did, we wouldn't survive. The only way to survive was to go clean. To Nonna, I was the one most likely to rewrite the Costa Famiglia's legacy. After my recovery, I gathered all the elders I trusted. As to those who betrayed us, I had them killed. Wi

Luca's words made my heart stop beating for a moment. He was holding my visa documents for Bellavia. I lied casually to Luca's horrified expression. "Nonna missed me and would like me to spend some time with her for a bit." "But this happened out of nowhere. Why didn't you tell me, Elena?" Luca wetted his dry lips. However, the blood hadn't returned to his face. My eyes were cold as I replied, "There are so many matters you've got to deal with. You're too busy to take a break, right?" "But our daughter…" I looked down at Sofia, who was holding on to the corner of his shirt. "Sofia needs to go to school, right? As for my legs, I haven't had a chance to tell you about them because you've been so busy. I wanted to tell you the news on a special occasion. I wasn't expecting you to find out so early." Under his mistrustful gaze, I stuffed the document back into Pierre's briefcase. With a smile, I embraced him. "Don't worry about me. I'll be back before you know it." Luca sig

The next day, when I went downstairs for breakfast, I heard Luca and Sofia whispering to each other. "Mama was unhappy when she came home last night. It was probably because Ms. Celia had been present. You've got to be nice today and cheer Mama up, alright?" I paid them no attention. As we were about to finish breakfast, Luca said he wanted to bring Sofia and me to a gala. Luca tested the waters. His eyes glittered with anticipation as he said, "Could you come with Sofia and me?"Sofia stood to the side without expressing her impatience, which was a rare sight. She stared at me with doggy eyes. Before I could reply, Sofia tottered over and took my hand. "Let's go, let's go!" She pushed me into my walk-in cupboard and asked our helpers to help me change into formal wear. Luca followed us. Shooing Sofia out, he began looking for his own suit. As he rummaged through the drawers, a pink furry handcuff fell out of the pockets of one of his suit pants. Everything seemed to hav
