Chapter 5

Autor: Oatmeal Porridge
As all that was happening, I was on a fishing boat headed to a small coastal town called Castelloro.

I took out my phone, slid my finger over the name "Vincenzo" in my contacts, and looked at the photo I'd saved with his number. It was one of us. In it, he held me with a bright smile on his face and rows of roses in the estate behind us. That was us three years ago—the version of us I thought would last a lifetime.

I deleted everything tied to him—photos, texts, social media accounts. I even wiped the cloud backups. Then, I powered off the phone and tossed it into the cold sea.

Starting now, there wouldn't be the Corleone family's Donna, Isabella. There would only be Isabella Rossi, who lived for herself.

Giuseppe had already prepared new identification for me, erasing any trace of my connection to San Aurelio. This carefully staged "fall into the sea" was the funeral that cut me off from my past for good.

Castelloro sat by the water. The place Giuseppe found for me was on a qu

During Vincenzo's hospital stay, Marco and I visited him now and then. Marco never showed a hint of jealousy; he even bought vitamins and snacks for me to give to Vincenzo.Sometimes, they would chat about the town's scenery or how to make a good cup of coffee. The mood was unexpectedly calm.Once, I stayed alone in the hospital room to look after Vincenzo. He suddenly said, "Isabella, I want to talk to you.""Okay." I nodded."I know I made a lot of mistakes." He looked at me, his eyes full of remorse. "I treated you like a tool, a cover, and I hurt you deeply. I always thought protecting Lina was my duty and safeguarding my family's interests was my mission, but I neglected your feelings and my own heart."It wasn't until you 'died' that I realized you'd already taken the most important place in my life. I regret it every day. If only I'd reached the docks in time back then; if only I'd believed you… Would everything be different now?""It's all in the past." I sighed. "There a

"Lina, don't do anything rash!" Vincenzo shouted, trying to stop her.But it was too late. Lina moved fast. Her eyes were deranged as she aimed the rock straight at my forehead.I squeezed my eyes shut, my mind blank from the fear. I was certain I was about to die.Just then, a figure lunged in front of me, shielding me. With a dull thud, the rock slammed into Vincenzo's back. He groaned, swayed, and collapsed to the ground."Vincenzo!" I cried, dropping to my knees beside him, my voice shaking.Blood seeped through the back of his shirt, staining it a shocking red. He lifted his head to look at me, a faint smile on his face. He asked hoarsely, "Isabella, are you okay?""I'm fine." My tears fell onto the back of his hand. "How about you? Does it hurt? Is it bad?""I'm okay." He shook his head and tried to stand, only to sink back down again. "It's just a scratch. It's nothing."Lina froze when she realized she'd injured Vincenzo. The rock slipped from her hand, and panic floode

"Yes." I nodded, firm and without a trace of hesitation.Vincenzo looked at me, the light in his eyes slowly fading until all that remained was endless despair. He said nothing else as he turned and walked back to his car.The car pulled away and disappeared at the end of the block.I let out a breath. My knees buckled, and I almost collapsed. Marco caught me. His voice was gentle with concern as he asked, "Are you okay?""I'm fine." I leaned into his arms, silent tears sliding down and soaking his shirt. "Grazie, Marco."He patted my back lightly and said tenderly, "It's all over now."…After Vincenzo left, Castelloro settled back into its quiet rhythm. I thought he would give up and return to San Aurelio, but I was wrong. He stayed and rented a small house in town, settling down there. He didn't bother me again. Sometimes, I saw him sitting at the cafe across from the bistro, watching me from a distance. His gaze was a complicated mix of regret, pain, and a hint of stubbornn

"How did you find me?" I forced myself to stay calm, taking a step back to put space between myself and Vincenzo. He moved toward me, unsteady on his feet, his eyes full of pain and regret. "Isabella, I'm sorry. I was wrong. I never should've believed Lina. I shouldn't have stayed when you were abducted. I shouldn't have left you to face everything alone… I know that sorry doesn't cut it, but I really can't live without you."His words were like a hammer to my heart. The "abduction" and "falling into the sea" had been part of my last test for him, and his choice had shattered what was left of my hope.Hearing him say these things now felt ironic."You didn't do anything wrong." I let out a cold laugh, fighting to keep my emotions in check. "You just did what you were supposed to—protect your precious Lina. I was the extra. Faking my death was my way of cutting ties for good. I've already walked out of your life, so why are you here now?""That's not true!" Vincenzo blurted, his vo

All the diners paused, watching us with curiosity and whispering among themselves.I frowned, moved in front of the bar, and tried to keep my voice even. "Lina, this is my bistro. You need to leave.""Leave?" Lina let out a cold laugh, sweeping her jealous gaze around the place. "You used my recipes to make all this money, and now you want me to leave? You're shameless, Isabella!""Your recipes?" I arched a brow, anger surging up. "Get it straight, Lina. The recipes are mine! You stole my recipe book and copied everything in there! You used my work to win yourself credit, and now you're turning it around on me?""You say I'm slandering you?" Her emotions spiked, and her voice rose to almost hysterical levels. "If not for you, why would Vincenzo be so cold to me now? If you hadn't faked your death, he wouldn't have gone crazy looking for you! He wouldn't have stopped caring about my baby! It's all your fault! You ruined everything for me!"Her screeching frightened a little girl ne

"Si, I do. He's the Don of the Corleone family. Everyone in San Aurelio knows him," Marco said evenly. "But I don't know him personally. I've just heard of him. My family deals in art, and we never got involved in mafia disputes. I later grew tired of the scheming in San Aurelio, so I moved to Castelloro and opened a cafe."His honesty eased me a little. The car fell silent, leaving only the sound of raindrops tapping against the windows. When we pulled up in front of my building, Marco handed me the umbrella. "Take it. Just remember to return it to me tomorrow.""Grazie." I took the umbrella and pushed the door open to get out."Isabella," he called after me. "Let the past stay in the past. Your life now is much better, isn't it?"I turned back to look at him. The streetlight fell across his face, illuminating his gentle and sincere eyes. I nodded, then walked into the stairwell. From then on, I let my guard down around Marco. I also knew Vincenzo was still looking for me.Gius
