INICIAR SESIÓNAuthor’s POVRichard stared at his hands, remembering what he had done. Strands of her hair were still on his finger as he shook it away.“I should finish it,” he groaned, clenching his stomach where she had hit him before running off.He managed to stand on shaky legs as he stumbled towards his desk.He reached for his phone, trying to call security to stop her from setting foot outside. “Katie,” he called out the moment the front desk picked up, “I need you to stop my daughter from leaving this building,” he ordered. There was a pause on the other side before she replied, “But sir, Miss Elara already left a few seconds ago—”“Damn it.” He slammed his telephone, cutting her off. But he knew it might be too late for him to do anything to stop her. Her footsteps had already faded. He managed to take a seat, reclining on it when his cellphone rang.He reached for it, half expecting Elara or his in-laws.K
I kicked off my shoes and collapsed on my bed, utterly exhausted from the day’s events. I didn’t want anything more than to just collapse on my bed and do nothing at all. The excitement over today’s victory was mind-blowing. The fact that we hit a blow to Richard and finalised our strategy was something worth celebrating. Sadly, there was nobody I could celebrate with but myself. There was nobody here who knew what I went through. Who knew the feeling of dying all because of the selfish greed of a few human beings. “Why was Kai here in the first place?” I asked myself. There was something off about him. “Was it because he wanted to feed information to his mother?” I shook my head at that thought. No, it wasn’t that. It was like he needed information for his own personal investigation or something. I know he was investigating the ring on his own. “That was a pretty dick move on my part.” Telling him his mother was involved with the ring was something I shouldn’t have blurted out
The room was emptied. Everyone had left one after the other after discussing a few details.“You did great, sweetheart.” Grandpa patted my back, a triumphant smile on his face. I blushed at the praise.“Thanks, Grandpa.” I looked to the side, trying to hide my bashfulness.“It’s good to know that I had such a wise and thoughtful grandchild like you.” We stood together. I tried to offer him a seat. “Who knew Richard could raise such an outstanding child.”I frowned at the mention of my father. I didn’t want to hear it.“How did the hearing go?” I asked. I was curious for details.“Oh, it went as well as you would think.” He let out a laugh. “He was stunned, stupefied by the summon and as well the evidence. You should have seen his face, dear.”I laughed at his words. I would have given anything to see Richard’s face when the court ruled against him. “Sad that I couldn’t see it.” I bit my lower lip.Grandpa’s hand moved to the back of my neck. I flinched at his touch from instinct. “How
I stood in front of the mirror adjusting my button up. Today would be an eventful day for me. I sighed at the thought.I had two things to take care of. One was getting through the emergency board meeting I had my grandparents organise, and two was the emergency custody hearing. With the substantial evidence I had piled against Richard, now was the time to act quickly before he made his move.I pressed the last button of my shirt to hide the marks he left me yesterday. Making sure nothing was visible. This was not for them to see. The main use for it had and would be accomplished.Apart from Katherine’s thinly veiled threat, I had not received anything from his side, which is good honestly. It would make him think I had learnt my lesson, been put in my place, and would no longer be a nuisance to him.“But you forgot one thing, Richard Voss, I am your daughter.” I smoothed down any single crease in my skirt. There was a knock at the door. I stepped back from the mirror, taking my bag a
I drove till there were a few miles between us, until I knew he wouldn’t be able to catch me. I parked and killed the engine. The adrenaline that had been driving me finally wore off. In its place came the tears. Hot and heavy.Angry tears. Very angry tears. I tried to calm myself but it kept on coming. The more I wiped, the more was flowing.I didn’t even know why I was crying for him, or felt this way.But I just knew I was.A part of me wanted to save him as well. I thought I could help him. I had thought he was just misdirected, that he would see the light. That was my thoughts during the first few days of being back. I thought he was a victim and was just blinded by greed.I didn’t know how wrong I was by my assumption.I lay my head on the steering wheel as I cried some more. I wept for the father I wished I had and for my siblings too.The sound of my cell phone jolted me from my crying spree.I slowly reached out for it, scared it would be Richard. The name on the ID flashed D
The events from yesterday felt like a blur. I couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that they were both hiding something from me.I didn’t have proof, so it would normally be ruled off as coincidence. It would be coincidental that they kept on running into each other. It would be coincidental that the car just smelt faintly of her perfume. It could be coincidental that Paisley looked at me like that. But I don’t run with coincidences. I prefer fact and truth. And the truth was that Paisley and Kai are more than they let on.They know something, or they were together. I didn’t understand why they hid their relationship from others.Except they didn’t want to be linked together. That was the most plausible answer. Now wasn’t the time to think about them. I had other pending issues to sort out. I will find out the connection between them.I took my bag with the folder I had arranged and walked out towards the parking lot.I got into my car and drove out into the city, most especially tow
