Chapter 11: A Stolen Glance

The biting morning wind whipped across the gravel courtyard of the Wexford estate, carrying with it the unmistakable scent of damp earth and old money. Adrian pulled his cashmere overcoat tighter around his chest, his breath pluming into white clouds against the gray expanse of the sky.

He didn’t want to be here. Every inch of the sprawling, ivy-draped monolith felt less like a weekend retreat and more like an open-air prison constructed entirely of limestone and iron gates.

"Keep up, Adrian," Lawrence called out from twenty paces ahead, his stride stiff and commanding as he walked alongside the elder Wexford. "The morning ride through the north paddock is where the actual terms of the restructuring will be laid out. I expect you to look engaged, not as though you are marching to your execution."

"I am entirely captivated, Father," Adrian replied smoothly, injecting a toxic dose of aristocratic obedience into his tone.

"See that you stay that way," Lawrence shot back without turning his head, his polished leather boots crunching relentlessly over the gravel.

Adrian slowed his pace intentionally, letting the older men pull ahead. The vastness of the Wexford stables came into view—a massive timber-and-stone structure that could comfortably house a battalion of cavalry. Rows of high arched windows reflected the bleak morning light, and the sharp, clean smell of hay and polished leather drifted over the yard.

As he skirted the perimeter of the primary paddock, a sudden movement near the far wooden fence caught his eye.

A tall figure, clad in a dark, fitted riding jacket that looked entirely out of place among the stable hands in their coarse canvas vests, stood leaning against the top rail. The posture was unmistakable—the casual, dangerous slope of the shoulders, the tilt of the head. It was a silhouette etched into Adrian's memory from the rain-slicked gardens of the Bellweather gala.

Theodore.

Adrian’s breath hitched. His heart slammed against his ribs with the force of a hydraulic press, sending a blinding spike of adrenaline straight through his veins. How had he breached the perimeter? The estate was surrounded by three miles of security fencing, motion-sensitive cameras, and private guards carrying sidearms.

"Theodore," Adrian whispered, the name escaping his lips before he could stop it.

Without breaking his stride, Adrian veered off the gravel path, his boots sinking into the wet turf as he rushed toward the paddock. The distance closed rapidly. Every nerve ending in his body fired at once, a volatile mix of panic and an intoxicating, illicit thrill. He was exposed out in the open, completely visible from the main house and the riding paths, but he didn't care.

"What are you doing here?" Adrian hissed as he reached the fence, his gloved hands gripping the rough wooden rail. "Are you insane? My father is less than a hundred yards away."

The figure turned slowly, the heavy collar of the dark jacket hiding the sharp line of his jaw.

Adrian reached out, his fingers lunging to grab the fabric of the coat, desperate to pull the intruder back behind the cover of the stables before the security detail spotted them. "Get down, you're going to get us—"

His fingers closed around coarse, damp wool.

The figure turned fully around, revealing a weathered face, a missing tooth, and a pair of wide, startled brown eyes belonging entirely to a middle-aged stable hand holding the halter of a restless chestnut mare.

"Mornin', sir," the stable hand muttered, blinking in confusion at the manic panic radiating from the young billionaire's heir. "Just tryin' to settle this one down before the ride. Too much frost in the air."

Adrian froze, his hand still clamped awkwardly to the man’s lapel. The blood drained entirely from his face, leaving his skin ice-cold.

"Right," Adrian choked out, his voice cracking slightly as he forced his fingers to uncurl from the rough wool. "Carry on."

The stable hand gave a slow, suspicious nod and turned back to the mare, leaving Adrian standing alone against the splintered wood of the fence.

The tall figure near the paddock dissolved into nothing more than a passing illusion born of exhaustion and paranoia, and Adrian let out a long, shuddering breath that frosted heavily in the morning air. His pulse hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird, a sharp reminder of how easily his nerves were fraying under the relentless pressure of the Wexford weekend.

He pressed a hand against his chest, trying to force his breathing into a steady rhythm. The hallucination—or the near-miss—proved just how close he was to breaking. Every shadow looked like Theodore; every whisper in the wind sounded like a warning about the corporate slaughterhouse his father was leading him into.

"Adrian!" Lawrence’s voice cut across the courtyard, sharp and impatient. "Stop lagging behind. We are entering the main ring."

Adrian snapped his head up. Lawrence and the elder Wexford were standing near the grand entrance of the indoor riding arena, watching him with identical, appraising frowns.

"Coming, Father," Adrian called back, schooling his features into a mask of cold, impassive compliance.

Turning sharply away from the stables, he retraced his steps across the damp flagstones. But as he walked back toward the trap awaiting him in the arena, the phantom image of Theodore lingered in the back of his mind. If he was already seeing ghosts in the stables, the rest of the weekend was going to tear him apart from the inside out.

He reached the heavy oak doors of the arena, falling back into step beside his father just as the massive iron latches clicked shut behind them, sealing them inside the glittering, gilded cage.

Muffled shouting echoed from the direction of the main gallery, followed by the heavy, authoritative stamp of polished oxfords marching straight toward the west wing."Damn it," Adrian breathed, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.He lunged forward, his thumb hovering over the eject button of the micro-scanner, but the progress bar stubbornly lingered at thirty-four percent. If he pulled the cable now, the corrupted data would wipe the entire cache, leaving him with nothing to show for his treason. He needed at least sixty percent to crack Bellweather’s offshore routing numbers. The doorknob rattled violently."Who left this latch disengaged?" Gregory Bellweather’s voice boomed from the hallway, sharp and poisoned

Chapter 34: Almost CaughtThe progress bar on the micro-scanner crawled across the small monochrome screen with agonizing slowness. Seven percent. Eight percent. The amber glow of the security console cast long, skeletal shadows against the mahogany bookshelves of Gregory Bellweather’s private study, illuminating the sweat beading sharply along Adrian’s jawline."Move faster," Adrian hissed under his breath, his eyes darting from the creeping percentage bar to the heavy oak door behind him.The silence of the west wing was absolute, save for the rhythmic, high-pitched whir of the mainframe processing the encrypted downloads. Every second felt like an hour, every microsecond stretched to a breaking point as the weight of total destruction hung over his shoulders. If Bellweather returned now, if a security guard decided to check this corridor, there would be no excuses left to hide behind. He was knee-deep in high-treason corporate espionage, stealing the very blueprints of his family’s

Adrian slipped inside the room in a single fluid motion, shutting the door behind him and leaning his back against the solid wood. The study was pitch black, save for the faint, pulsing amber glow of a security console nestled in the far corner. He didn't waste a second. Crossing the Persian rug in long, silent strides, he dropped to his knees in front of the concealed wall safe hidden behind a mediocre landscape oil painting."Clara said quadrant four, toggle left twice, right to seventy," Adrian muttered, his hands moving swiftly over the dial. The heavy metal door swung open with a muffled hiss of depressurization. Inside, neatly stacked rows of physical bearer bonds and leather-boun

Moving with practiced stealth in the pitch-black ballroom, he slipped sideways through a heavy velvet drapery that concealed a service corridor. The air here was cooler, smelling faintly of old dust, floor wax, and electricity. He pulled a master key from his pocket—a delicate, brass tool Clara had managed to smuggle out of the estate office three days prior."Don't fail me now, Clara," Adrian muttered under his breath, his footsteps silent against the thick runners of the back hallway. The west wing was a labyrinth of shadows, stripped of the glittering artifice that defined the public rooms. Portraits of severe, dead Bellweathers watched him from the gloom, their painted eyes seeming to track his hurried progress. According to the architectural blueprint

Chapter 31: The Circuit BreakerThe crystal chandeliers overhead flickered once, twice, casting a brief, anxious shadow over the sea of silk and tailored wool before plunging the expansive ballroom into absolute, suffocating darkness.Gasps erupted instantly from the assembled elites, a collective intake of breath that sounded like a dry wave breaking against a cliff. Silver cutlery clinked loudly against fine china in the sudden quiet, followed immediately by the rising murmur of panicked confusion."Stay right here," Theodore whispered into the darkness, his hand brushing against Adrian’s shoulder with a firm, grounding pressure. "Do not move an inch until the emergency backup generators kick in.""Where are you going?" Adrian hissed back, reaching out blindly into the blackness, but his fingers brushed only empty air."To turn off the lights for good," came the faint, amused whisper from somewhere several feet away, swallowed up immediately by the rising tide of anxious voices arou

Chapter 30: The Auction HouseThe ballroom was a suffocating sea of glittering diamonds, heavy velvet drapery, and the suffocating scent of expensive perfume mingling with old money panic. Every surface gleamed under the fractured light of three massive crystal chandeliers, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished marble floor.Adrian adjusted the lapel of his custom-tailored suit, his fingers deliberately brushing against the hidden interior seam where the micro-scanner rested like a ticking bomb against his ribs."Stop fidgeting," a low, smooth voice murmured right beside his ear. "You look like a man walking to his own execution, and the vultures are already circling."Adrian didn't flinch. He kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, watching a group of senior bank executives exchange nervous whispers near the champagne fountain. "Let them circle. If anyone here suspects why we actually came, the execution won't wait for a courtroom.""They don't suspect anything," Theodore repli
