Some lies cut deeper than the truth.

And as Lucien’s words hung in the air, I realized I might bleed out before I ever knew which one Caelum was feeding me.

---

The air in Caelum’s office was too thin, too sharp. I could feel every breath scraping down my throat as if the city outside had stolen all the oxygen and left us with only smoke and tension.

Lucien filled the doorway like he owned the place, one hand resting lazily on the frame, the other tucked casually into the pocket of his midnight suit. His silver hair gleamed in the glow of the skyline, but it wasn’t beautiful it was cruelty dressed in elegance.

And that smile. God, that smile. It was the kind that could disarm a boardroom and slit your throat in the same breath.

“I warned you, Saphira,” he said smoothly, voice coated in his French accent that always made lies sound like truths. “Men like Caelum don’t marry for love. They marry to bury their sins. And believe me, he has many.”

I wanted to laugh, to call him a liar and s

The ladder was supposed to save me.Instead, it became the noose tightening around my neck one wrong move, one wrong grip, and I’d fall into the dark and never climb out again.---The shaft swallowed me whole. My palms slipped against the cold steel rungs, slick with sweat. My breath tore in ragged bursts, bouncing off the concrete walls and echoing back like a countdown.Above me, the sound of footsteps against metal was too fast. Too close. One of them was coming down after me.Which one?Every instinct screamed at me to move faster. My knees ached, my shoes scraped against the steel, but fear pumped adrenaline into my blood like fire.I climbed lower, deeper into the darkness, praying there was an end, a floor, anything solid beneath me. But the shaft stretched on forever endless, merciless.“Don’t look down,” I whispered to myself, but the words trembled out, useless. And then“Little flame.”The voice drifted down, rich with mockery, tinged with velvet poison.Lucien.I froze, f

Two men. One face. And in the dark, I realized the cruelest truth sometimes love and destruction wear the same skin.---The lights didn’t just flicker. They died. One heartbeat, I was in a room buzzing with harsh fluorescent light, staring at Caelum’s raised gun and Lucien’s mocking smile. The next, blackness devoured everything, thick and absolute.I froze. My breath hitched too loudly in the void, echoing like a betrayal.“Caelum?” My whisper scraped from my throat, raw and small.“Here.” His voice cut through the dark, low and urgent. Too far to my right. Then closer. Too close. A whisper brushing my ear like smoke.“Or is that me?”Lucien. My heart slammed against my ribs. The weight of the dark pressed down on me, stealing my bearings, my breath. My hand groped blindly, searching for Caelum, but only empty air met my fingers.“Stay behind me, Saphira,” Caelum commanded, but the dark distorted everything. His voice sounded everywhere at once.“Behind him?” Lucien laughed softly,

Darkness swallows faster than bullets. And sometimes it isn’t the enemy you fear in the shadows it’s the man dragging you deeper into them.---The wall sealed behind us with a hiss, muffling the chaos of shattered glass and gunfire until it felt like another world. But my body hadn’t gotten the message. My heart still beat in panic, my breath shallow, every nerve alive with the memory of bullets tearing the air apart.Caelum’s grip was iron around my wrist as he pulled me into the narrow corridor. The walls here weren’t marble or glass they were bare steel, utilitarian, a skeleton of the penthouse hidden behind its polished skin. This wasn’t a hallway meant for guests. It was a vein of the building, designed for escape, secrecy.I stumbled after him, my heels slipping on the grated floor. “Caelum stop.”He didn’t. His pace was brutal, urgent. The shadows seemed to cling to his shoulders, swallowing him whole as he dragged me deeper.“Caelum!” My voice cracked, louder this time.He ha

When the first bullet shatters your world, you think the worst part is the sound. But it isn’t.It’s the silence afterward the silence where you realize someone, somewhere, wants you dead.---The office was a ruin of glass and gunfire.I could still taste the sharp tang of blood in the back of my throat, though I wasn’t sure if it was mine or the phantom bite of panic clawing its way up. My heartbeat wasn’t steady anymore; it was erratic, jagged, like the shards littering the marble floor.Caelum’s weight pressed me flat against the rug, his body caging mine, protective and suffocating all at once. Every nerve in him was iron, every muscle braced like a fortress. I could feel his chest vibrating with the low rumble of curses he didn’t let slip past his lips.Another shot rang out. The glass wall behind us cracked deeper, fissures racing across the pane like lightning.“Stay down,” Caelum ordered, his voice a blade of steel cutting through the chaos. His hand pressed firmly against th

  • Vows of convenience Hearts in Collision    The Sound of Betrayal

They say silence is golden. But in Caelum Drayke’s world, silence is a warning. And tonight, the quiet pressed against my chest like a blade.---The silence in Caelum’s office was unnatural. Not the peaceful kind that wrapped around you like velvet at midnight, but the razor-edged kind that cut deep and bled nerves raw.I stood just inside the door, the city skyline blazing behind the glass, each light a distant fire. My reflection glimmered faintly on the surface, fractured by the angles of glass and shadow, and for one terrifying moment, I didn’t recognize myself.I looked like someone else someone harder, someone cornered.Caelum was seated at his desk, but he wasn’t working. His computer screen glowed, ignored, papers strewn across the surface in uncharacteristic chaos. He was too still. His jaw was tight, his ice-blue eyes darkened, his hands steepled beneath his chin.I knew that posture. I’d seen it in boardrooms, in negotiations, in rare moments when he thought I wasn’t looki
