The stranger disappeared before Ethan could get a clear look at his face, his boots crunched against the gravel as he stepped toward the road, eyes narrowing at the empty corner where the man had vanished.

"Officer?"

Grandpa Ben's granddaughter called, pulling him from his thoughts, Ethan turned back with a faint smile. "Everything alright?"

"Doctor Ariana is asking for you."

He glanced toward the small house where Ariana was helping Grandpa Ben settle into bed. She was focused on checking his pulse, completely unaware that someone had been watching her only moments ago.

Or maybe she was simply too trusting.

Ethan looked once more at the road.

Nothing.

Not even footprints.

His instincts rarely failed him, and right now, they were screaming that something wasn't right.

---

Three days later, Grandpa Ben had recovered enough to complain about being treated like an invalid.

"I'm telling you, Ariana, I'm perfectly healthy."

"You nearly died."

"I fainted."

"You stopped breathing."

He waved a dismissive hand. "Details."

I crossed my arms and stared at him.

"They're not details."

"They are."

"They're not."

"They—"

"Grandpa."

He sighed dramatically before lifting both hands in surrender.

"Fine. You win."

"I always do."

He grumbled under his breath while swallowing the last of his medication.

"I don't know why everyone listens to you."

"Because I'm the doctor."

"They're all traitors."

I laughed despite myself.

"You'll be back to arguing with Mrs. Martha at the market in another week, i can argue with her today."

"No."

"Tomorrow?"

"No."

"What about this evening?"

I pointed toward the bed.

"You'll stay exactly where you are."

He looked at his granddaughter with exaggerated sadness.

"See how she bullies old people?"

His granddaughter giggled.

"I think she's right."

Grandpa Ben gasped.

"Even you?"

"I'd rather have you alive than stubborn."

He looked around the room before muttering, "Nobody appreciates me anymore."

I shook my head with a smile before packing my stethoscope.

"Rest. That's an order."

"As if I have a choice."

"You don't."

Outside his house, the afternoon breeze carried the smell of fresh bread from the bakery across the road.

Children chased one another through the square while women arranged vegetables on wooden stalls.

Everything looked so peaceful.

It was hard to believe I'd be leaving in four days.

"Doctor Ariana!"

Mrs. Martha hurried toward me, carrying a basket.

"We're planning your farewell dinner for Saturday."

"You really don't have to."

"Nonsense."

"I'll only be moving."

"Exactly." She smiled sadly. "That's why we have to celebrate."

By the time I reached the clinic, flowers had already been left outside my door.

Some were from patients.

Others had little handwritten notes tucked beneath the ribbons.

Thank you for never giving up on me.

We'll miss you.

Come back and visit.

My throat tightened.

I hadn't realized I'd become such a big part of this village until I was preparing to leave it.

I unlocked the clinic and stepped inside.

The familiar scent of disinfectant greeted me.

For years, this tiny building had been my second home.

Soon...

It would belong to someone else, I had barely organized my desk when the front door opened again.

A woman in an expensive navy dress walked inside.

She didn't belong here, not with polished heels that had never touched muddy roads.

Not with diamond earrings that probably cost more than the clinic itself.

She removed her sunglasses slowly.

"Dr. Ariana?"

"Yes."

"I'm Eleanor Briggs."

The name sounded familiar.

I just couldn't remember where I'd heard it, She looked around the clinic before offering a practised smile.

"I've heard wonderful things about you."

"Thank you. How can I help you?"

Instead of answering, she placed a thick brown envelope on my desk.

I frowned.

"I think you've mistaken me for someone else."

"No."

She gently pushed the envelope closer.

"It's for you."

I didn't touch it.

"What is it?"

"A token of appreciation."

"For?"

"My husband."

The smile on my face disappeared.

Mr. Harold Briggs.

The wealthy businessman whose sudden death had shaken the village two weeks ago.

His autopsy had revealed traces of poison.

I still remember signing the report.

"I'm sorry for your loss," I said quietly.

"So am I."

Silence settled between us.

Then she spoke again.

"I came because I need a small favour."

"What kind of favour?"

"Amend the death certificate."

I stared at her.

"I'm sorry?"

She folded her hands neatly on her lap.

"Change the cause of death from poisoning to heart failure."

For a moment, I honestly thought I'd misheard her.

"I can't do that."

"You can."

"No."

"It would save my family's reputation."

I shook my head.

"It would also be illegal."

Her smile faded.

"No one has to know."

"I would know."

She leaned forward.

"Name your price."

I looked at the envelope again.

Money.

Enough to tempt almost anyone.

But not me.

"I became a doctor to save lives, Mrs. Briggs. Not to rewrite the truth."

Her eyes turned cold.

"You think the truth matters?"

"I do."

She let out a quiet laugh.

"You're young."

"I'm old enough to know right from wrong."

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she stood.

She picked up the envelope before slipping it back into her handbag.

"You have quite the reputation for honesty."

"I'd like to keep it that way."

She walked toward the door.

Just before leaving, she paused without turning around.

"Some truths come with consequences, Doctor."

The door clicked shut behind her.

A strange chill ran down my spine, i stood there for several seconds, staring at the closed door.

Then I shook my head, she was grieving. People said things they didn't mean when they were hurting, at least, that's what I wanted to believe.

  • WAS I TOO LATE?   The woman he chose

Morning sunlight streamed through the curtains, pulling me from a restless sleep. For a moment, I forgot where I was. Then the events of yesterday came rushing back—the gunfire, the rain, the wounded stranger, and the secluded estate that looked more like a fortress than a home. I quickly freshened up before making my way to the private medical suite. The room was quiet except for the steady beeping of the monitor. He was awake."You shouldn't be standing," I said the moment I saw him near the window. He turned slowly, one hand resting against the glass. "And yet, here I am."I sighed, walking over to examine the fresh bandages on his shoulder. "Your fever is gone, but the stitches are still new. If you reopen them, don't expect me to stitch you up again."A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips."I'll try to behave.""Good."I checked his pulse one last time before closing my medical bag."You're recovering well. You won't need me anymore."For a brief second, neither of us sp

The convoy didn't slow until the towering iron gates of a secluded estate slid open, revealing a sprawling mansion hidden deep within the mountains. It looked less like a home and more like a fortress. Armed guards lined the entrance, their expressions hard and alert as the black SUVs sped into the courtyard. The moment the vehicles stopped, several men rushed forward with a stretcher, moving with practised precision. No one panicked. No one shouted orders. They simply knew exactly what to do. I climbed out after them, my shoes splashing against the rain-soaked pavement, clutching my medical bag as I hurried beside the unconscious stranger."Medical room. Now," I said firmly. The men exchanged uncertain glances before looking toward the man who had been speaking to me since the roadside. He nodded."Do exactly as the doctor says."Within seconds, Lucian was wheeled into a private treatment room unlike any I'd ever seen. It was fully equipped with modern medical equipment, surgical ins

  • WAS I TOO LATE?   The man in the rain

The bus pulled away from Ashwood just after sunrise, carrying me farther from the only home I had ever known, sat beside the window with my fingers wrapped tightly around the stethoscope keychain Ethan had slipped into my palm before I boarded. The village had disappeared from sight, but the ache in my chest refused to leave. Eight years. That was how long I had lived there, treating broken bones, delivering babies, comforting grieving families, and believing that if I worked hard enough, life would eventually reward me. Instead, I was leaving behind a ruined reputation, unanswered questions, and a heart that still refused to believe Daniel could betray me after everything we had sacrificed together. The rain began less than an hour into the journey, drumming steadily against the windows as the bus climbed a winding mountain road. Most of the passengers had fallen asleep, their heads resting against the seats while soft music played through the driver's radio. I reached into my bag an

barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the assassin's knife flashing beneath the streetlight, heard his voice whispering that I wouldn't survive a second time, and woke with my heart pounding against my ribs. By sunrise, the bruises on my wrists had already begun to darken, reminding me that none of it had been a nightmare. Dressed quietly, tied my hair into a low ponytail, and forced myself to head for the clinic. Staying home would only give fear a place to grow, and I refused to let whoever wanted me dead steal the last days I had left in Ashwood. The moment I stepped outside, I knew something had changed. Conversations stopped as I walked past. Women who normally greeted me with warm smiles suddenly lowered their voices. Two elderly men standing outside the bakery looked at me before pretending to continue their discussion. A little boy waved at me, only for his mother to gently pull his hand down and lead him away. My footsteps slowed. The attack had frightened everyone

  • WAS I TOO LATE?   No second chance

Rain began as a light drizzle just after checking up on my last patient. I glanced through the clinic window, watching the sky darken far earlier than usual, and sighed before closing the final medical file. The events of the past few days refused to leave my mind. Eleanor Briggs' warning. The muddy footprints inside my clinic. Ethan's growing concern. I wanted to believe they were unrelated, that I was simply letting fear cloud my judgment, but every time I reached for that comforting thought, something inside me whispered otherwise. I locked the medicine cabinet, switched off the lights one by one, and slung my medical bag over my shoulder. The village had already gone quiet. Most families were indoors, escaping the coming rain. Only the sound of distant thunder followed me as I stepped outside and locked the clinic door behind me.I had barely taken a few steps when I heard another set of footsteps.Slow.Measured, not trying to hide, i stopped walking, the footsteps stopped, too.

  • WAS I TOO LATE?   The hunter never misses

Morning arrived with a blanket of gray clouds hanging low over Ashwood Village. I stood outside the clinic, unlocking the front door as the familiar scent of damp earth filled the air. Normally, mornings brought me peace. Today, they only reminded me of the muddy footprints Ethan had found the night before.I pushed the thought aside.Fear wouldn't help my patients.Inside, I switched on the lights and arranged the files on my desk. It was my routine—one that somehow made everything feel normal, even when it wasn't. Before I could settle down, the bell above the entrance chimed."Doctor Ariana!"A little girl no older than eight rushed in, clutching a bouquet of wildflowers almost as big as her head.I smiled."Well, good morning, Lily."She beamed as she placed the flowers on my desk."These are for you.""They're beautiful.""My mama said you'll be leaving soon."I nodded gently."In two days."Her smile faded."Are you coming back?"The question caught me off guard."I hope so.""Y
