Chapter 8

Author: Langsley
After leaving Elwood, I flew to another country and rented a place to begin my life anew.

Unexpectedly, someone knocked on my door a few hours later.

When I opened the door, I saw my parents standing in front of me in a disheveled state.

“Why are you two here?”

I wanted to shut the door, but my mother blocked it with her body.

“Morgan, your dad and I saw the news, and we immediately wanted to see you.

“After you ran away from home, we reflected on ourselves. We were too harsh, and it was wrong of us to plan everything about your life. We thought it was an act of love for you, but we never considered your feelings. We’re really sorry.”

As I stared at them, complicated emotions rose in my heart.

While growing up, they forced me to do things I did not like. If I fought back the slightest bit, I would be yelled at harshly.

The depressing and suffocating atmosphere made me choose to flee the moment I became an adult.

It was precisely because I had never felt the warmth of

Elwood trembled, but even after humming and hawing for a long time, he did not say a thing. Cain shuffled over to me and clasped his hands uneasily. “I’m sorry, Mom.” The moment he spoke, he started crying. “I shouldn’t have done those things to hurt you. I…”I sighed and stopped him from what he was going to say next. “Cain, I know that you always thought that having a handicapped mother is a burden to you. You think that my presence alone embarrasses you in front of your classmates. “So, I fulfilled your wish: from the day I left, we’ve become strangers.”He cried so badly that he nearly suffocated, but I only watched quietly. “Don’t ever show up in front of me again, both of you. I don’t want to see you. The mere sight of you reminds me of how stupid I was.”I motioned my assistant to push me away from the place, leaving behind those two to stand rooted to the spot.A week later, I got an update about Elwood from the news. He surrendered to the police and told them abo

“Why? You love Verde too! Not only is she pretty and can dance, she doesn’t try to control me, unlike that woman. She also wouldn’t make me feel ashamed in front of my classmates,” Cain Howard, my son, said in disappointment. My heart hurt so much that I could not breathe upon hearing him outside the study. When I was not in front of him, he refused to even call me his mother. After a long pause, Elwood rubbed the ring on his finger and sighed. “Your mother loves us. I betrayed her because of Verde, so the only thing I can do now is to give her an unbroken family.”Cain’s young voice was laced with puzzlement. “What if she finds out about it?”“She won’t,” Elwood said firmly. “I’ll keep it a closely-guarded secret. Even if she suspects something, for our family’s sake, she will choose to believe in me.”The pain in my heart made me tremble. I wanted to run away, but I ended up going into the room Elwood forbade me from entering. There was nothing strange about the room. Just

Once I composed myself, I wheeled myself out of the room. I came out just in time to run into Elwood and Cain looking for me in a panic. “Mom…” Cain could not hide the fear on his face. Elwood schooled his face but still asked nervously, “Were you in the room just now, Morgan?”I smiled faintly, but said nothing. I reacted as I usually would, which made Elwood and Cain sigh in relief. But this small reaction left a bitter taste in my mouth. I did not want to watch their act anymore. It was time to leave. Elwood hurried forward. He was slightly teary eyed as he carefully lifted me on the couch. “Don’t worry, Morgan. I’ve contacted the best orthopedician in the world. You’ll definitely recover. If you can’t, I’ll become your legs and bring you all over the world.”In the past, I would have thought that he felt sorry for me, but time had shown that it was all just crocodile tears. I was an idiot. That was why he managed to deceive me for five years. He wanted to say so

I told the lawyer everything that happened, which led to her sighing in resignation. “Letters of forgiveness issued by the victim’s family are legally binding. It has also been five years since the case, so it’s practically impossible to hold Verde Sala accountable in the eyes of the law.“But have you thought things through about the divorce?”“Yeah. Since he loves Verde so much, I’ll help them get their wish of being together,” I answered without hesitation. “What about Cain?”I fell silent for a moment. I had nearly died giving birth to Cain, and he was my only family left. I wanted to say that I did not want him either, but I just could not steel my heart to do so. He was young. As long as I explained things to him, it would be fine. Just as I was about to reply, Elwood and Cain came back with smiles on their faces. When Cain saw me on the phone, he came over curiously. “Who are you talking to, Mom?”Elwood gave me a searching look as well. “It’s nothing. Just a

I struggled up from the floor, only to see Elwood running over to hug Verde. “Will you?”I laughed at Elwood’s threat, but felt grief in my heart. When Elwood saw that I was the one he pushed down, he panicked. “Morgan? Why are you here?”Before I could answer, Verde started crying. “Elwood, I know that Morgan hates me, but I didn’t do it on purpose. I just wanted to apologize to her…”Elwood scowled at me in displeasure. “Morgan, what happened is already in the past. Verde has paid for her crimes in jail. You shouldn’t have done that.”I looked straight into his eyes and said, “In jail? Was it fun lying to me?”Elwood flinched in shock. In a panic, he tried to give me an explanation. “Morgan…”But Verde cradled her ankle in “pain.”“Elwood, my leg hurts. Do you think it’s broken?”He looked at me, then at Verde. I could see a war waging in his eyes for a brief moment before he eventually chose to hold her. “Wait for me, Morgan. I’ll give you an explanation later.”

With trembling hands and a pale face, Elwood picked up the two pieces of paper. A slip of paper slid out from between the two. He scrambled to pick it up and found Morgan’s handwriting on it. [Farewell, Elwood.]There were only two words, but they struck Elwood’s heart like a sledgehammer. He swayed and nearly lost his footing. The pieces of paper almost fell on the floor, but he managed to react in time and grab hold of them. [I’m willing to cut ties with Cain Howard.] Those words made Elwood tear up. “Dad, is Mom leaving us?”Cain looked at him hopefully, wanting to hear him deny it. But Elwood’s tongue refused to work, and he could not say anything even after a long time passed. He tried calling Morgan again, but her phone remained turned off. He searched through every nook and cranny of the house, only to find that all of Morgan’s belongings were gone. At that moment, just like the house, his heart became empty. Elwood instinctively wanted to go to Morgan’s

Elwood thought he was hearing things. He could understand everything Anthony told him, but he just could not seem to figure out what he meant. “Doesn’t Mr. Sala and Mrs. Sala only have one daughter? Her name is Verde! How could Morgan be her?“Besides, wasn’t the car crash an accident? How…”His voice faded until it was barely a whisper. “After asking around for verification, I learned that Mrs. Howard is indeed Mr. Sala and Mrs. Sala’s only daughter. She’s a Salucci only because she took on Mrs. Sala’s maiden name…”After a long moment of hesitation, he added, “I shouldn’t be saying this, but Mr. Howard, sometimes, I find that things have been really unfair for Mrs. Howard.“Think about it. When the accident happened, why did Verde appear right when Mrs. Howard had finished dance practice and was about to go home? Why didn’t she call the ambulance instead of you? Later on, she got the letter of forgiveness from you and went off to take part in the International Dance Competiti

  • Waking Up From Lies   Chapter 7

Ten minutes ago, Anthony had sent Elwood a recording. It was of Verde’s conversation with a friend. “Look at me. I didn’t even do anything, and I have two men dancing on the palm of my hand.”Verde’s smug laughter echoed in the air. “Morgan is so high-and-mighty, isn’t she? A dancing genius, huh? I still broke her legs! Honestly, I wanted to kill her. That way, the Sala family’s wealth would all be mine. But now that I think about it, having her only able to watch as I take all that originally belonged to her is much better. What would it be like seeing her husband and son falling for my lies and protecting me so desperately? This is way worse than her dying!”Elwood could no longer suppress his burning rage. He slapped Verde across the face. “You wicked woman! I must have been blind to have fallen for your lies for so many years and done so many things to hurt Morgan!”His chest heaved. He wanted to skin Verde alive right then and there. Since Elwood had concrete proof, Ver
