Chapter 4

Author: Robotic Cat
Delilah always returned the favor with my hard-earned money. She squandered my money without the slightest hint of gratitude, yet she treated all the junk Noel casually tossed her like it was a priceless treasure.

Noel had more things than I did in this apartment. I found it amusing.

Delilah's heart was just like this apartment. There was no room left for me in it.

No, that wasn't entirely true. There was still a place for me—the place of an ATM that always gave her whatever she wanted.

Unbeknownst to her, even an ATM would grow disillusioned after having its heart beaten down too many times.

I went back to my room and started packing my belongings. Once I was done, I realized that everything I owned couldn't even fill a single suitcase.

I had a handful of clothes and basic toiletries. Then, there was the only gift Delilah had ever given me—a suit she'd casually given me after realizing the seller had sent the wrong size. It was originally a gift for Noel.

I scoffed and tossed the suit straight into the trash before getting ready to leave. Yet, the moment I pushed open my bedroom door, I heard a commotion outside.

The front door swung open, and Delilah walked in, supporting half of Noel's weight. He looked like he'd had a bit too much to drink, judging from the way he stumbled along. The two of them were so close that I honestly couldn't believe they weren't a thing.

"Oh, you're home." Delilah's eyes darted around when she spotted me. "I texted you, but you didn't reply. Noel just returned to the country, and he came straight to our city. He hasn't found a place yet, so he's going to stay with us for now. Why don't you go find a hotel to stay in?"

I was so infuriated I couldn't help but chuckle. "You're asking me to stay in a hotel for his sake?"

Before she could respond, Noel slurred, "Delilah, you don't need to go out of your way to take care of me. I'll just crash at a hotel. I don't want to come between you and Elio."

Right after saying that, he staggered as he tried to rise to his feet.

Delilah hurriedly caught him, her eyes filled with concern. "Absolutely not. You just flew back, and you don't even know your way around here. You'll get taken advantage of.

"Besides, you've had way too much to drink. What if something happens to you?" she fretted.

Her voice was gentler than I'd ever heard it when she spoke to me.

"Elio, you stay at hotels all the time anyway, and you're familiar with the area. You know which ones are reliable."

Whenever Delilah and I fought in the past, she would kick me out of the apartment.

Even though I was the one who paid the rent and covered all the expenses, I didn't want Delilah to feel like she owed me anything. So, I would humor her and spend the night in a nearby hotel.

Back then, she had never once worried about whether something might happen to me.

When I remained silent, she tried to coax me gently, "Elio, please, just this once. You've stayed at hotels plenty of times before. Tell you what, I'll pay for your room this time."

Having said her piece, she pulled out her phone and transferred 200 dollars to me.

My heart was eerily still, and I almost laughed out loud.

I'd seen the bills for the rooms she'd booked for Noel before. Every single time, it was an executive suite at a five-star hotel, costing one grand a night. Yet, here she was, attempting to get rid of me with a measly 200 dollars.

Her love was wherever her money was. Now, the last bit of hope I'd been holding onto was completely snuffed out.

"That won't be necessary. I was planning to stay at a hotel tonight, but now, I've changed my mind."

Before she could process what I'd said, I seized her and Noel and shoved them both out the door. "I pay the rent, and everything in this apartment was bought with my card. If anyone's getting the hell out, it's you two!"

Delilah staggered a couple of steps. Before she had even regained her balance, she hurriedly supported Noel.

After putting all the pieces together, Delilah's intentions became fairly obvious to me. Either she was pregnant with Noel's child and wanted me to be her fallback, or she wanted to use her baby as an excuse to keep sucking money out of me and funneling it to Noel. Either way, I found it laughable. We'd been together for seven years, and it really had all been a lie. But I didn't have time to dwell on it. I knew I had something more important to do. I hired eight bodyguards overnight and had them stay by my side round the clock. Business at my company was booming. If I put myself in Noel's shoes and I was desperate for cash, I'd definitely set my sights on me. It was better to be safe than sorry. My own skin was top priority at the moment.Sure enough, not long after I hired my bodyguards, Noel made his move. To my surprise, Delilah showed up, too. While Noel was lying in wait for me on the route I took to work every day, Delilah came up behind him. Without hesitation, s

Several women quietly berated me in the crowd. Right after saying that, they started livestreaming, claiming they were going to expose my disgusting behavior, make me pay, and force me to return everything I owed Delilah. There was even a burly man who rolled up his sleeves, ready to seek justice on Delilah's behalf. Drinking in the enraged crowd, I scoffed. When I shifted my attention back to Delilah, my eyes were devoid of emotion. "You probably don't know this, but I had a vasectomy three years ago." The color drained from her face almost instantaneously. Back then, after coming across posts online about how painful and bloody childbirth could be, she had wept and told me that she didn't want children. She had also insisted that I share her view, and if I didn't, apparently it meant I didn't love her. Later on, I also learned about how painful childbirth could be. I figured it didn't really matter whether we had children or not, so I'd secretly gone to the hospital and had

I glanced at it. It bore the hospital's seal, the doctor's name, and the test results. Her hCG levels were significantly elevated, confirming the pregnancy. "For the sake of our baby, let's get back together, Elio." Her voice was soft and subdued. I had no idea what she'd been through during this time, but she looked like a shell of herself. Delilah used to be so haughty; she had always spoken to me as though she were ordering me around. She never asked for my opinions when she made decisions. She simply told me what she'd already decided.I exhaled slowly before inquiring, "You want to get back together? Then what are you going to do about Noel?" Her eyes darted around. "He'll understand. I'm doing this for my baby. He'll eventually find someone better than me."Besides, while I was with him, I thought I'd be happy, but for some reason, all I could think about was you, Elio. I regret it. I shouldn't have treated you like that in the past."I still have feelings for you. G

I decided to put pen to paper and write down all the uncontrollable thoughts lingering in my mind. A philosopher once said that putting a problem down on paper meant one had already solved half of it. I traced the problem back to its roots and dissected our seven-year relationship. Whenever I was free, I would click into Delilah's social media and scroll through her posts one by one, all the way to her last post before Noel left the country. By the time dawn broke, I came to a conclusion that sent a shiver down my spine—Delilah had never loved me. Even though Noel had gone abroad, she'd never truly gotten over him. Delilah had only been with me because when I passed out, I reminded her of Noel. He had hypoglycemia, too. She'd always said she didn't like me wearing suits and preferred me in sportswear simply because that was Noel's style. One night, I'd heard her mumble in her sleep, calling out, "Honey." But looking back now, that "Honey" wasn't meant for me; she was calling

I jerked my chin toward Noel. "Get your childhood sweetheart to pay it back. You transferred all my money to him. Since he adores you so much, he wouldn't just sit by and watch you drown, would he?" Delilah shifted her attention toward Noel. The color drained from his face, and he instinctively stepped back. "Delilah, you gave them to me. Besides, you know I just returned to the country." Noel clutched his pocket tightly, a malicious glint flashing through his eyes. It was the first time Delilah had seen such an expression on his face. Surprise flickered in her eyes. Delilah was caught off guard. Then, she bit her lip. "I transferred so much money to you, so you must have some left, right? Can't you give me a little—""What's that supposed to mean, Delilah? Do you think I'm lying to you?" Noel feigned hurt.Delilah hurriedly explained, "No, that's not what I mean. I just—" Before she could finish, he cut her off. "Look, I'm so grateful for everything you gave me, but I've a

My lawyer lived just around the corner, so he showed up in no time. Delilah hadn't even wrapped her head around the situation before he appeared at my doorstep. "Are you seriously bringing a lawyer into this, Elio? Why are you being so unreasonable? I already told you I'd give you another chance and take you back! Can't you take a hint?" Delilah grew anxious. She was well aware of how to keep me wrapped around her finger. She knew I was sentimental and wouldn't have the heart to leave her. Hence, no matter how much she pushed my buttons or how badly we fought, we'd never reach the point of breaking up. "Listen here, if you ask your lawyer to leave right now, I'll pretend none of this ever happened. If not…" Her ultimatum died in her throat. Perhaps it was because she noticed how calm and composed I was. Or maybe she'd finally realized that, throughout our relationship, the only way she had ever been able to control me was by threatening to break up with me. Previously, the mom
