Chapter 3

Author: Summer Green
“Eula! Have you no conscience left?!

“That’s my grandmother’s heirloom!

“What right do you have to give it away?!

“For the sake of the seven years our family raised you, give it back to me!”

Eula’s face instantly twisted into a hideous grimace.

Smack!

With a sharp slap, my head was violently jerked to the side. My ears rang.

Eula hated it most when people brought up her past as a dependent.

It shattered what little self-respect she had left into a million pieces.

“Who told you to bring that up?!

“As expected, you really have always looked down on me!

“Zephyr, you really have always thought of me as nothing more than a dog your family kept!”

Luke wrapped his arm around her as he added fuel to the fire.

“Eula, don’t get angry. Zephyr didn’t mean it. He’s just in a bad mood.”

As he spoke, his gaze drifted casually toward my room. A sinister smile played on his lips.

“By the way, I think I saw Zephyr’s computer in his room just now. The browser was even logged in.

“Why don’t we just fill out his college applications for him? Let’s save him the trouble.”

My heart clenched suddenly.

“No!”

I screamed at the top of my lungs. But my arms were once again pinned down so tightly I could not move an inch.

The fury on Eula’s face slowly faded. A cold, cruel smile took its place.

“Zephyr, do you think being the valedictorian makes you so great?

“Let me tell you, even if you get into the top universities like Ozford and Hafard, you’d still have to do as I say!”

She turned to look at Luke. Her flippant tone was tinged with a hint of barely perceptible affection.

“Luke, where would you like Golding to go to school?”

Luke tapped his chin with his finger, pretending to think.

“Hmm, let me think. I heard there’s a community college with a pretty good beauty and hairdressing program. Why don’t we send Zephyr there to further his studies?

“With his looks, he might even become the school’s heartthrob!”

A burst of laughter immediately erupted around us.

“Eula, I’m begging you.

“This is my future. You can’t do this to me…”

My pleas did not elicit a shred of pity. Instead, it only made them laugh even more wildly.

“Zephyr, I’m just trying to help you. What’s wrong with studying beauty and hairdressing?

“You’ll be able to blow-dry my hair for me in the future. Wouldn’t it be convenient?”

Luke snuggled up beside her and grinned happily.

“That’s right, Zephyr.”

He sighed and feigned concern. In contrast, his tone was shrill and grating.

“You’re always so eager to serve Eula. If you study beauty and hairdressing, it’ll be the perfect way to learn even more service skills.

“You’ll even be able to design hairstyles for Eula in the future. Don’t you see how thoughtful that’d be?!”

He deliberately emphasized the word “service”. His gaze was full of provocation and mockery.

“Hahahaha! Luke is right!”

“We might be able to get in on the action too! Having the valedictorian wash our hair? That kind of treatment is beyond our wildest dreams!”

“Eula is awesome! That’s exactly how you deal with him!”

I watched helplessly as Eula filled out every slot on the application form, listing that community college as the sole choice.

I screamed in agony.

“No! Eula, you can’t do this to me!”

She finished submitting the application and flashed me a triumphant smile.

The application had been submitted. Everything had been set in stone.

The two arms that had been holding me down finally let go. I collapsed to the ground in despair.

Eula seemed to want more. She intended to crush my last shred of hope in the most ruthless way possible.

Amid the deafening cheers and applause from the crowd, she grabbed my laptop.

You’ve got to figure something out fast!”At that moment, Eula was wandering the streets like a stray dog.Luke’s words only made her even more distraught. So, she snapped back angrily, “I don’t have a damn penny! I can barely make ends meet myself right now!”Hearing that, Luke completely lost it.He screamed hysterically into the phone, “No money? If you didn’t have money, why the heck were you pretending to be rich?“I spent every last penny I had for you, you good-for-nothing! You’re nothing but a disaster!“I must have been blind to ever fall for trash like you!”Eula was also furious at being berated like this and roared back, “If it weren’t for you, would Zephyr have dumped me? “Please get a grip on the situation. We broke up the moment you tried to ruin my future.”I tried my best to keep my emotions in check, but I could not help raising my voice.Eula clearly had not expected such a firm rejection. Her face instantly turned ashen.“But you got into Ozford too! You didn’t even tell me you had received direct admission!”She lowered her voice, a hint of threat in it. “Zephyr, there’s a limit to your nonsense!“Don’t forget, you’re supposed to marry me someday. Be careful, or I might never marry you!”I gave a cold laugh and fired back without flinching.“I don’t need to! Who wants to marry you anyway?“You should save yourself for your true love, Luke. You two are a match made in heaven!”She sparked a look of sudden realization and smugly assumed I was just jealous.“So you actually care about Luke? I can break up with him. Will that make you happy?”She paused for a moment before she started complaining again.“You really are something, sneakin

The audience erupted in a thunderous, undying applause.…Eula could not help but check her phone every couple minutes. But there were still no messages.Zephyr had blocked her. This realization felt like a steel needle piercing deep into Eula’s nerves. How dare he? What gave him the right? The man who had obeyed her every command for the past seven years and tailed after her like a lap dog actually dared to block her!She flung her phone onto the coffee table in frustration. Luke, who was cowering in the corner of the sofa, shuddered from fear. The coffee table was piled high with leftover takeout boxes. Several empty liquor bottles lay scattered about.“Has Zephyr come crawling back yet?”Luke tentatively suggested, “Why don’t I apologize to him on your behalf?”Eula whipped her head around and glared at him.“Why should I apologize to him? Who does he even think he is?”“He’s just a yes-man who comes when called and goes when dismissed. Does he really think he’s somethi

Just as the two of them were getting ready to head to the priciest restaurant near campus to “celebrate,” Eula’s phone started vibrating like crazy. She instinctively assumed it was me, finally backing down and sending a text to make amends. She could not help but smile as a hint of smugness and certainty played on her face. However, when she unlocked the screen. The stares of the freshmen and parents waiting in line all turned sharply toward her.“What’s this nonsense?!”Furious and humiliated, she snatched her card back and dialed my number without a second thought. She only heard a busy tone. She was still blocked.A surge of uncontrollable rage shot through her. She nearly flung her phone to the ground. In a panic, she scrolled through her contacts. She found my father’s assistant’s number and dialed it.As soon as the call connected, Eula resumed her haughty, high-and-mighty demeanor and ordered in a bossy tone, “Mr. Zieg? I don’t care what you’re doing right now. Unfreeze my bank card, immediately, right this second!“Zephyr is throwing a tantrum, and now you’re joining in? This is just a misunderstanding!”The assistant spoke without a trace of emotion.“Miss Ross, I think you may have misunderstood. This was the chairman’s decision.“He has formally terminated the adoption relationship with you through legal channels.“From n

Her expression darkened. She immediately pulled out her phone to call me, but no one answered.Eula muttered a curse under her breath. Her expression was a mix of irritation and disdain.“Does Zephyr think he can force me to go back and plead with him for mercy with these tactics? He’s laughably naive!”Luke added fuel to the fire. “Zephyr is way too much. He just can’t stand to see you happy.”“Forget about him. Does he think cutting off my card means I’m broke?”Eula scoffed and pulled out another card from her wallet.“I still have my own savings. It’s more than enough for us to have fun.”She thought I was just throwing a tantrum.Once she had had her fill of partying and came back, a few soothing words would be enough to make me come crawling back to her, tail wagging, just like before.Having made up her mind, she continued partying with Luke until she had spent every last penny she had.The first day of school finally arrived.Eula rushed to the entrance of the commun
