Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
I checked myself out of the hospital that same day, over the doctor's objections.

I stuck to my story — that my husband and son were dead, that I didn't know Dwayne or Carl, though everything and everyone else was still clear in my memory.

The doctor told Dwayne it was probably temporary amnesia brought on by the concussion — I might never get my memory back, or I might wake up remembering everything the next morning.

Both Dwayne and Carl looked thrilled at the news. After that one brief appearance in my room, they planted themselves at Laurel's bedside and didn't leave.

The day I was discharged, it was the same kind young nurse who walked me out. She looked worried the whole time. She hesitated for a long moment before finally getting the words out just as I was about to get in the car.

"Ms. Winslet... that Mr. Arnault and his son — are they your family? They've been by Ms. Winters's side this whole time. I just thought you should know."

She'd overheard part of Dwayne and Carl's conversation with the doctor, and now her face was full of sympathy for me.

I thanked her silently for her kindness, then said flatly, "That's not possible. My husband and son died a long time ago — in a fire. Mr. Arnault and his son are strangers to me."

I got into the car after that, but my mind drifted back to a fire from three years ago.

I'd never forget that day. It was the day I lost the child in my womb and the ability to ever get pregnant again.

I'd just found out I was pregnant that day, and I'd been about to tell Dwayne the good news when he came home drunk out of his mind. The moment he saw me, he started in with the mockery — told me I didn't know my place, that I was nothing but a parasite clinging to him to survive.

Carl had gotten sick again that same night. Between nursing him and dealing with a drunk husband, I was run ragged. I brewed Dwayne a pot of black coffee to sober him up, coaxed him into drinking it, then turned all my attention to Carl.

By the time I'd finally gotten Carl to settle down, I was pregnant and exhausted beyond what I could take, so I slumped against the edge of the bed and dozed off for a moment.

That was when I lost track of what Dwayne was doing.

He'd lit a row of candles in the living room — for what, I never found out — and then passed out drunk before putting them out. He hadn't fully extinguished them. The last embers caught, and by the time I woke up, the house was already on fire.

I carried Carl on my back and dragged Dwayne, dead drunk, out of the burning house. I made sure both of them were safe. But my own cheek was burned by the flames, and the shock and terror sent me into a miscarriage — one that cost me my ability to ever carry a child again.

Afterward, Dwayne blamed me for not being more careful. I was so deeply in love with him back then that when he frowned and asked me how I could have let it happen, I drowned in guilt and took every bit of the blame onto myself. If only I'd stayed alert that night, I told myself. If only.

That was the day their eyes toward me changed — thick with disgust every time they looked at the scar on my cheek that would never fully heal.

A month later, at an international business summit, I saw Dwayne looking more confident than ever. He'd already gotten his marriage license with Laurel, and he was walking her around, introducing her to everyone.Carl was there too, wearing a suit that didn't fit him properly, noticeably thinner than before. His eyes lit up again when he saw me, but then he noticed Chloe beside me, dressed up like a little princess, and the easy warmth between the two of us. His expression dimmed.Dwayne walked over, all easy smiles. "It's been a while, Janine. I heard the Winslets want to do business with the wealthy Mr. N. I could introduce you — I hit it off with him myself the other day."Watching him look so pleased with himself, I almost wanted to laugh. That was when a low, pleasant voice spoke up beside me. I turned and saw a man in a perfectly tailored suit, onyx cufflinks glinting at his wrists. He smiled. "It's been a long time, Janine."I studied his familiar features, racking my bra

I knew Dwayne would eventually come crawling back to me, but I hadn't expected him to break so fast. He showed up at the Winslet estate with Carl in tow. When the butler told me the news, I was in the middle of helping Chloe with her homework.I thought it over and decided to see him after all.But when I actually laid eyes on Dwayne, I was still caught off guard. The polished, refined man he used to be was gone, replaced by someone haggard and worn down. His eyes lit up the moment he saw me.I smiled. "Watching you get more miserable by the day makes me happy."Before Dwayne could get a word out, Carl cut in, indignant. "How can you be so vicious? He's my dad. Can't you show him some respect?"I laughed. Carl still didn't seem to understand the position he was in.I sent Chloe off to play with her homework — she was too young, and I didn't want her exposed to adult grudges so early in life. She deserved a happy childhood. The moment Dwayne saw Chloe, his temper flared. "You wo

The day I finished the divorce procedures, the weather turned out beautiful, though Dwayne looked like he was in mourning. I knew exactly what had him so miserable — nothing but trouble on the business side of things. He looked at me, his expression complicated, and said quietly, "Janine, we're divorced now, but if you ever need help with anything, I'll still help if I can."I let out a cold snort. "Then go get reborn into a better life first, and maybe I'll consider asking you for help. Worry about yourself instead. Don't come to me later looking for child support money for Carl."Dwayne was furious. He glared at me several times, working hard to swallow his temper before finally walking off, pretending none of it had bothered him.As for my family— once they saw the security footage of Carl harming me, several pieces of antique porcelain ended up shattered on the floor that same night. It was only thanks to the old family butler working up his courage to drag them all to the boxi

Carl froze. Even he couldn't come up with an answer to my question right away. But then his eyes landed on the burn scar on my cheek, and a flicker of disgust crossed his face. "You can't compare to Laurel at all. You're not even pretty, you're useless, and all you ever do is watch Dad like a hawk. Someone like Laurel is the only one who deserves to be my mom."And you're always controlling me — you won't let me have ice cream, you won't let me have fried chicken, and you make me drink that gross medicine every single day. You're hideous. You don't deserve to tell me what to do!"This time, it was my turn to freeze.I'd run through so many explanations in my head — maybe Laurel had deliberately turned him against me, maybe he was just copying Dwayne's attitude toward me.But it had never once crossed my mind that these were his own thoughts, all along. I'd had no idea he was carrying around this much resentment toward me.How ridiculous.Carl kept going, accusing me. "It makes m

I tossed the paperwork at Dwayne and left.On my way out, I told the butler to sell the villa. I'd expected it to hurt — Dwayne and I had lived there for seven years, after all. Even after the fire, I hadn't been able to let go of the place. I'd spent a fortune restoring it to exactly how it used to be.But now, all I felt was lightness, like a set of shackles had finally come off.I didn't have to orbit anyone else's life anymore. I could have a life of my own. I wasn't anyone's wife. I wasn't anyone's mother. I was just me.For years, love had kept me locked in a cage of my own making. I'd spent every day chasing after affection that was never mine to have, unable to break free, watching helplessly as I turned into a walking corpse. Now, finally, I was free. Finally, I could live for myself.I packed up everything that belonged to me, and only then did I realize how out of date all my bags and accessories were. I hadn't bought myself anything new in years.I told the butler t

I didn't know how that whole scene ended, or how they finally left. All I felt was exhausted.I didn't care about any of it anymore. I just wanted the divorce. The next time I saw Dwayne, his haggard appearance still caught me off guard. He hadn't been having an easy time of it either. Once my family learned what I'd endured over the past seven years, they were furious. They pulled every privilege they'd extended to Dwayne when we married, and once word got around Charlston City's upper circles that the Arnaults had crossed the Winslets, people started cutting ties with them one by one.The Arnault family was a dog without a home now, and everyone was lining up to kick them while they were down, just to stay in the Winslets' good graces. When Dwayne showed up in front of me, his suit was wrinkled, and his jaw was covered in stubble."Janine," he asked, drained, "does it make you happy, seeing me like this? You never lost your memory, did you?"I smiled and nodded, watching disb
