Melissa’s POV

“He’s gone. I’m really sorry.”

The words are almost lost in the stale wind of the hospital. I stare at the white tiles of the floor, slowly lifting up my gaze to the doctor who just broke the news.

“Are you the daughter?” she asks kindly.

I shake my head, taking the daze along with it. “I’m not. I just… I was a friend. We were supposed to have lunch together. You can contact his family.”

The nurse nods solemnly. “Of course. In that case, you can leave now. But if you want to stay and meet his family….”

She trails off when I stand up. I don’t want to stay here any longer. I don’t want to stay in any hospital any longer. It feels like I have spent way too much time here already, and I just want to come home.

After all that, I’m not sure how to function.

I get in my car, taking out the check from my pocket and staring at it.

All that, for nothing. I took money from Zane hoping it could buy justice, but in the end, all it got me is another heartache. Another missed chance.

  • When Our Daughter Died, My Husband Cheated   47 - Chance

Melissa’s POV“No more dinner,” Grandpa announces, ignoring his wheelchair when Ivy tries to offer it meekly to him. “I lost my appetite. Andrew, Melissa… just come with me to my study.”I look over at Andrew, but he says nothing. He just nods and follows Grandpa, while I trail off behind them without a word. His study is at the first floor of the mansion. It’s a beautiful room, with mahogany tables and shelves, full of little mementos from all the places that Grandpa has visited. It’s homey, even without the fire crackling in the fireplace.Grandpa doesn’t sit behind the desk. He just leans against it, watching us both stand before him.“I’m sorry,” I start to say, but he turns to Andrew with eyes full of expectation.“Well?” he prompts. “Are you not going to say anything about the disrespect that you just showed your wife?”Andrew’s jaw tightens. “I wish it didn’t happen. I don’t know what else to say about that.”I didn’t expect anything from him, but even I am dissatisfied with th

  • When Our Daughter Died, My Husband Cheated   46 - Upper Hand

Third Person POVMelissa never thought the day when she finally gets to one-up Eleanor would ever come. Now it’s here, and she can’t even enjoy it.Underneath all the vindication is resentment. So bitter that she can’t swallow it back. She faces Andrew, waiting for him to say something, but the best he can do is shut up and stare at the floor.“There it is,” Grandpa says, taking his cane attached to his wheelchair and slowly getting to his feet. “Melissa is innocent. I hope this matter gets put to rest—”“It’s a setup,” Ivy suddenly interjects, sounding like she just had a revelation. “Melissa set that camera up in advance!”“I don’t know if you know how setups work,” Melissa mutters. “That would be valid if I provoked the child to do that. But as you can see, she did that unprompted.”Ivy sneers. “Oh, you think you’re so clever. I will smack the shit out of you—”The rest of her words get cut. Grandpa wheels around on her and slaps her hard on the face. Ivy staggers back in shock, st

  • When Our Daughter Died, My Husband Cheated   45 - Refute

Melissa’s POVThe silence in the room is intense, so much so that I feel like I just entered church. I slowly get to my feet, my shin still hurting from what Nadia did to me.I limp to keep myself upright, and out of the corner of my eye, I can see that all of them are pretending not to see me.Only Grandpa is looking at me. He’s pushing himself around on his wheelchair, casting his wary gaze at everyone. He spots Lottie still sitting on the floor like a bombing victim, and his mouth thins out into a fine line. He’s always been the only one from Andrew’s side that ever had my back. He defends me, because he seriously thought that I was the best pick for Andrew. From the very beginning, he rooted for our relationship, even had a hand in shaping it the way it turned out. At least, the mere act of being together. For the past two years, he’s been staying in the Netherlands. From what little I could gather from Andrew, Grandpa has been having trouble with staying alert and awake throughou

  • When Our Daughter Died, My Husband Cheated   44 - Framed

Third Person POVThe scene unfolding in front of Eleanor’s eyes is a stuff of nightmares. With one swift move, Melissa was able to turn the tables on her. Now, she’s the one who wants to grab a bottle of wine and break it over Melissa’s head.Andrew is shocked. In fact, he’s a little flustered. What was Melissa doing? Why was she acting like this? She pulls back and he sees his sweet wife again, the one who would wait faithfully with a hot meal when he’s out working late. This is the version of her that he thought was lost forever.“Thank you for making me my drink,” Melissa says, taking a sip. “You made it perfect as always.”The compliment makes his ego sing. It’s a big thing to hear from the woman who seemed to have developed hatred for him overnight. He clears his throat. “You’re welcome. I’m glad you could make it. Are you hungry?”“Very,” Eleanor puts in, smiling sweetly at him in the hopes of winning back his attention. “What’s for dinner?”“What?” Andrew asks distractedly. “O

  • When Our Daughter Died, My Husband Cheated   42 - Last Words

Melissa’s POVI almost jump behind a lamppost to hide from Andrew, but I can already see his blue eyes sweeping over me. I decide to straighten my jacket and just walk along, pretending not to see him.Only for him to block my way.“Getting cozy with Zane?” he asks without preamble. “I’m not getting cozy with anyone,” I reply. “Since when did you start to care?”“I don’t,” he says simply. “I’m just observing. It’s not a good look, you being out here alone with other men.”I would be lying if I said that this comment doesn’t sting. The way we left things off last time… it wasn’t good. I frankly cannot believe that he doesn’t believe that Allie is dead despite not seeing her for weeks at this point. I don’t know if it’s denial, or if he just managed to villainize me so bad in his mind that he refuse to see the facts.Either way, it’s devastating. It’s difficult to even look him in the eye right now.“We had a meeting about the job,” I just say. “I have to get going now.”“He won’t even
