Chapter 3

Penulis: Meow in the Fog
Shane had sent, "I know you wrecked every car in my garage. Now that you've vented your rage, let's put this behind us."

Tears spilled faster down Lena's cheeks as she read the words.

How could she ever let this go?

Her baby was gone, her heart was broken, and three years of devotion had been thrown back in her face.

How could any of this just end?

Wiping her tears, she dialed a number. "Draft a divorce agreement for me. Yes, right now."

After hanging up, she went back to her room and started packing her bags.

Two hours later, the lawyer delivered the paperwork.

Lena sat in the living room, waiting until dusk, when Shane finally returned.

He walked in and froze when he saw her sitting on the couch. "You—"

Before he could finish speaking, Lena shoved the document in front of him. "Sign it."

Shane looked down, his expression darkening. "A divorce agreement? Lena, what kind of scene are you making now?"

"I'm not making a scene," Lena said calmly. "Sign it, and we can part ways in peace."

Shane tossed the papers onto the coffee table with a cold sneer. "You think I don't want a divorce? Our families' interests are too tangled up. My dad used Yasmine's life to threaten me. If I dare divorce you, they'll ship her somewhere I'll never find her."

He paused, eyeing Lena. "Besides, remember what your dad threatened you with? If you divorce me, he won't even let your dead mother rest in peace. So stop wasting your time."

"That's none of your business," Lena said, staring him down. "I have plenty of ways to make this divorce happen."

Shane laughed as if he'd heard a joke. "What ways do you have? Don't be naive, Lena. For people like us, marriage was never ours to decide."

He turned to leave, but Lena stepped into his path.

"Sign it," she demanded, holding out the agreement and a pen. "Or nobody is leaving tonight."

Shane frowned. "Lena, stop being unreasonable."

"Unreasonable?" Lena laughed bitterly. "Shane, do my baby's life and three years of my youth mean nothing to you?"

Shane was shaken by the sheer finality in her eyes.

Looking at her, he suddenly felt as though he were looking at a stranger.

The woman in front of him was no longer the spoiled, arrogant heiress who cared about nothing.

There was a desperate, lethal edge in her gaze, like that of a cornered beast ready to spring forward and tear his throat out.

"Fine."

Shane suddenly smiled. He took the pen and signed his name across the page. "I'll sign it. But this is pointless, Lena. Think about your mom's grave."

He threw the signed agreement at her and walked out.

Lena stood where she was, watching his figure disappear past the doorway. Finally, tears flooded down her face.

What Shane didn't know was that she had secretly moved Eliza's grave to a safe place behind her father Lewis Chapman's back a long time ago. Lewis' threats meant nothing to her now.

She hadn't stayed married to Shane all these years because she was afraid of Lewis or because she had anything to gain from the marriage.

It was simply because she loved him.

She had loved him foolishly and helplessly for three long years.

Now, it was time to wake up.

Pouting her lips, she looked on the verge of tears.Shane froze for a moment before instinctively bending over to pick up the plush toy. After patting off the dust, he handed it back to her. His voice softened without him realizing it. "Are you okay?"Raising her head, the girl revealed a doll-like face with large eyes. She looked at Shane without a trace of shyness. As she took the plush rabbit, she chirped, "Thank you, sir."Right then, a gentle female voice drifted over from not far away, "Aria, slow down. You might trip."That voice…Shane's body stiffened violently. A soft ripple of applause erupted across the crowd.Shane closed his eyes, his thick eyelashes trembling violently."Ms. Lena Chapman, do you take Mr. Kieran Webb to be your lawfully wedded husband, to love him and cherish him, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, for as long as you both shall live?"The surrounding air seemed to freeze over.Shane snapped his eyes open, his heart leaping straight into his throat. He stared fixedly at Lena like a condemned prisoner awaiting his final judgment. What would he hear?Would he hear the exact answer he had craved in his dreams, yet was destined never to receive?Lena raised her head and met Kieran's gaze with clear, serene eyes. After returning to his room, Shane pulled a document from the very bottom of a locked drawer. It had been prepared long ago, but he had never signed it.It was a full equity transfer agreement for Steele Corp's independently operated, highly promising tech subsidiary, one deeply aligned with the artistic realm Lena adored. The transferee was Lena. This was the most direct and the most insignificant form of compensation he could think of.Even more, it was his ritual of bidding farewell to the past.He picked up the pen, his knuckles turning white from exertion, before finally signing his name at the bottom of the page. The sound of the nib scraping across the paper rang painfully clear in the silence of the room.…A month later, at an exclusive private winery in Selvaria closed to the public, sunlight streamed brilliantly over lush green lawns.
