Madelyn’s POV

A gentle silence descended upon the marble stones and well-kept grass in the cemetery as I walked in, wrapping everything in a kind of quiet that felt heavier than it should.

I missed my mom so much. She’s been gone for years, but the ache hadn’t faded at all. She died, and not even two weeks later, Nathan brought Fiona and Yolanda into our home.

I hated them for that.

I hadn’t slept in days, barely eaten anything either. My legs wobbled with every step, and honestly, I felt like I could collapse at any moment.

Heh. Collapsing right here in a cemetery didn’t even sound that bad. At least it would’ve saved me a few steps.

With nothing left, skipping straight to the end almost felt… fitting.

A few steps ahead, I noticed a middle-aged man kneeling before a grave. I frowned with curiosity.

Although his posture was formal and his suit was flawless, the way he wiped the picture on the stone suggested something much more intimate and unvarnished. Behind him, two bodyguards stood at a respectful distance, silent and taking in their surroundings.

The photograph showed a girl my age. My eyes gazed at it and I slowed my steps without realizing it.

The man’s eyes lifted, and the longing in the man’s eyes screams volumes of emotions. It was heavy with a grief I could almost feel.

The man might have felt my gaze and our eyes met. I felt like I had interrupted his moment, and with burning cheeks of shame, I realized I was intruding. Quietly, I stepped aside and let him have his privacy.

By the time I reached my mother’s grave, my steps slowed. The flowers I brought last time were still there, wilted and brittle, pressed flat by time.

Beside them lay the little vanilla-scented candle my mom used to love, now burned down to nothing.

No one had replaced them. Nathan had never come.

I knelt and gently brushed the dead petals aside, replacing them with fresh ones. My hands shook a little as I fixed them into place.

“Sorry, Mom,” I whispered, trying to smile even as my eyes stung. “Henry didn’t come with me today…”

The tears that had been gathering finally spilled over, slipping down my cheeks before I could stop them.

“I lost everything,” I breathed, voice cracking. “Everything.”

Henry. Carter. Even Dad. They all seemed to drift away from me, one by one, leaving an empty space I could not fill.

Henry flashed into my mind. He must miss me, too, just as I miss my mother. Wait, what if Henry had forgotten about me? Or thought I had forgotten about him?

My stomach churns at the thought that my son has been fed with lies and erased me from his life.

I grabbed my phone and quickly dialled the number that connects with Henry’s smartwatch. It rang, but the call was cancelled, so I dialled again.

‘The number you were trying to reach is either unattended or out of co–”

“Shit!” I turned the call off and tried again, but I can no longer reach him.

Either Yolanda or Carter confiscated Henry’s smartwatch! They must be so determined to sever every tie I have with Henry to reach this point. The smartwatch also acts as Henry’s GPS, and without it with him, I hope they won’t lose him in the mall or anywhere!

I tried again, but still no answer.

“Mom, I need to see Henry. I don’t know what to do.” I sobbed as I clutched the cold stone. “Even just a glimpse, I want to see if he is okay… how he is doing.”

What mansion, what money… none of it mattered. I only wanted my son.

Even if he was Yolanda’s biological child, the years we spent together were real. The laughter he brought me was real. And now they tell me I do not deserve him. Why? On what grounds?

I wiped my tears and made up my mind. I would find my son. No matter what it took.

“Mom… please give me strength,” I whispered as I placed my forehead against her name. “Please protect Henry. Keep him safe.”

I finally stood and said goodbye, letting the wind carry my last plea.

I didn’t notice how long it took me to reach the road, how the world had shifted around me. My head was light, and I felt lost and out of it. My mind solely focuses on seeing Henry, even just a peak or a glimpse–anything to ease my worry.

The revving sound of a car made my eyes widen in shock. A few meters away, a car was speeding past its speed limit and rushing towards me! I was stunned, my feet frozen into the cemented ground.

My heart lurched, my hands gripped the railings.

The car was coming straight for me!

The world shrank for one terrifying heartbeat. My instinct is the only one running in my head, there was no thought. I shouldn’t stay frozen on my feet. I couldn't be hit!

The river waited below, and the railing felt chilly to the touch. And the car was still heading for me.

Then I moved.

I climbed, pushed off the bridge, and fell.

The air blew past me, ripping at my hair and clothes. I was falling, and the thought of drowning made my stomach drop. For a single, suspended heartbeat, the world seemed to tilt.

Is this how I’ll die?

Madelyn’s POV“What are you–Let me go now!” I snapped, trying to be freed from his arm.Shadow L was behind me, and his veined arm was wrapped tightly around my waist. I wanted to go to Henry. I want to hold him. I miss my son; I need to see him up close. I need to be near him, and that’s all my mind could think about!“Shh! Keep your voice down, Madelyn,” he said.I struggled again, but he tightened his hold even more, and I was pinned closer to his body.“My son–”“I know, I know. Calm yourself, please,” he pleaded in a low voice, and the way his breath fanned on my ear caught my attention. He was so close. We were so close that I could feel the warmth coming from his chest, and crawling on my back. The hairs on my nape stood, and my heart started to beat hard against my rib.“Have you calmed down?” he asked in the same low voice, and I nodded slowly like I was hypnotized.Silence enveloped us, and my eyes focused on the narrow crack of the slightly ajar door of the storage room. Madelyn’s POV“All of them will know that behind that elegant and confident face hides a monster!” Yolanda continued, wiping the water off her neck and face harshly.I was too blinded by revenge that I forgot to play things slow, but how could I slow down when the opportunity presents itself? There’s no right time for revenge, only the decision to stop waiting.I maintained my cold expression, unwavered by her threat.“You haven’t seen my monster yet, Yolanda,” I said in a calm voice. “Your threat doesn’t faze me one bit.”Her face burned red, anger shooting out of her eyes. “Not for fucking long.”“Hmm,” I placed my hand on my chin, as if thinking. “You sure haven’t realized what the consequence would be if you spout such nonsense, huh?”She frowned. “What consequences are you talking about?”I smirked. “You think I didn’t realize that you were about to spill your drink on me, you bitch.” My words came out like a spat, her eyes widened. “You think I’m the only one who noticed? Madelyn’s POVYolanda gagged on the toilet water, and I let out a laugh she probably didn’t hear clearly. Her hands moved helplessly to scratch my arm or my face, but she’s in a defeated position to create any damage to me.“Did you hear that?”“What’s that?”“I don’t hear anything.”The female guests inside the restroom talked, but they went out one by one until I couldn’t hear any more voices or movements inside the room.“Wanna breathe?” I asked Yolanda, smirking, and pulled her head out of the water.“You-!” she tried to turn around, but I gripped her nape hard, pushing her down hard.“Not so fast,” I smirked.“Let go of me!” she pounded her fist against my arm and kicked out with such force that I stumbled lightly, but I held my ground.I pressed my knees into Yolanda’s back, pushing her down more to limit her movements.“What do you want?! Why are you doing this?!” she yelled, thrashing around beneath me.I let out an evil laugh. “You talk too much. Let’s muffle those screams, sh

Madelyn’s POVThe guests around us gasped in surprise. Yolanda couldn’t believe what happened, probably because she didn’t expect her trick to backfire.“My dress! My dress!” Yolanda keeps fanning herself, panicking.“Oh no, I’m so sorry,” I placed my flute of champagne on a nearby table. “That might stain,” I said, wincing at her wet dress.“Here’s some tissue,” Carter said, handing the tissue to her. “Let me help wipe it off.”“You’re smudging it even more! Ugh!” Yolanda stomped her feet. I almost smiled from how childish she looked. “Stop it, Carter!”“I’m only trying to help, Yolanda!”“Well, you’re not helping!” she snapped, tapping the tissue on her dress. Carter stopped helping and just watched Yolanda.I pursed my lips, feigning a concerned look. “That won’t do. Come with me,” I grabbed Yolanda’s arm. “God, I can be clumsy sometimes. I’m so sorry.”“N-No, it’s fine. It was an accident.” Yolanda said, trying to get out of my hold.“Just come with me, I’ll accompany you to the re

Madelyn’s POV“Of course, I’m sure.” Yolanda overconfidently said. “I wouldn’t be wrong with anything fashion-related.”I couldn’t hold my laugh back anymore. Yolanda just looked too confident; it was so funny that I blurted out a laugh before I could stop it.“Hmm, funny,” I murmured.“Are you laughing at me? At my limited edition gown?” she snapped.I shook my head slowly and faked a concerned sigh.“I’d hate to be the one to burst your bubble, Yolanda, but…” I eyed her gown slowly. “If I’m not mistaken, that gown was a last season piece.”“W-What?” she looked taken aback. “It’s not! You must be mistaken, Miss Sterling.” But her proud demeanor faltered.“I’m afraid not.” I put on a pitying expression. “And that never sold out, which makes it more of an overstock than an exclusive release.”Yolanda looked around, checking if someone had heard what I said. She’s clearly doubting her earlier proud words.“Y-You’re wrong–”“I actually dined with Aljay Cortesi last week,” I cut her, ment

I'll pick it up for you,” he smiled.I arched a brow as Carter leaned down and reached for the card.He just believed my words in a snap, just like that. But just leaning down to pick up the card? That's not enough. He showed me he would go far just to suck up to me, so that's what I wanted to see…Was Carter. On the floor. On his knees. Right in front of me.I waited for his fingers to touch the paper, and when they did, I stomped my heels on his hand.Hard.Carter gasped in pain, his knees wobbled, and he got into the position I wanted him to be in.Kneeling before me was the man who crushed my life, who broke me.“Miss Courtney?!” He looked up, shocked and in pain.I covered my
