Chapter 5

ผู้เขียน: Sweetie Moore
Anger surged within me. Unable to hold it in any longer, I yanked the IV needle out of my arm, got out of bed, and slapped Jackson across the face.

"You bastard!" I grabbed his collar and raised my fist to hit him again.

Just then, Jenny came back with some takeout. Seeing what happened, she rushed between us and shoved me hard.

With how weak I was, I slammed into the edge of the bed and collapsed onto the floor.

Jackson clutched at Jenny's sleeve, covering his face as he choked out, "Don't blame him, Jenny. It's all my fault. Since he's jealous of your past relationship, and seeing my face looking so much like my cousin's disgusted him so much, I'll just stay out of his way from now on."

I struggled to get up, trying to explain, "Jenny, my mom—"

Jenny's heart broke the moment she saw the red handprint on Jackson's cheek. With reddening eyes, she slapped me before I could finish.

She yelled, "Caleb! Not only did you drive Ian away, but you're so jealous that you can't even tolerate his cousin? And now you're even trying to use your sick mother as an excuse to get sympathy?"

Jessy angrily grabbed my wrist and forced my hand toward my own face. "Since you like slapping people so much, then stay here and slap yourself. Don't stop until you've slapped yourself a thousand times."

She then left with Jackson, loudly calling for doctors the whole way, as if he had suffered some life-threatening injury.

This time, Jenny left two rows of burly bodyguards behind to watch me. If I didn't slap myself, or if it wasn't loud enough, they would do it for me.

By the time both sides of my cheeks were swollen, Rowena finally rushed in. "Stop! That's enough!"

But the lead bodyguard reached out to stop her. "This is Ms. Shelton's order, Mrs. Shelton. Please don't make things difficult for us."

"Have you lost your mind, Jenny?"

Panicked, Rowena tried calling Jenny, but the line stayed busy.

Only after I had finished slapping myself a thousand times, leaving my cheeks bloody, did the bodyguards finally leave.

My hand kept moving out of numb habit. Just as it was about to land on my face, Rowena grabbed my wrist.

She choked out, "Forget the seven days. Just leave today, Caleb. The helicopter is waiting on the hospital roof. Take your mother's remains and go. Don't ever come back."

Rowena carefully placed Mom's urn in my hands, along with a framed photo of her.

Looking at Mom's gentle smile in the photo, I couldn't stop thinking about how the human body has such a strong survival instinct. And yet she had suffocated herself to death with her own hands.

She had chosen death willingly, all to give me my freedom.

Unable to hold back any longer, I hugged the urn and broke down sobbing.

Jenny spent the next three days drinking and partying wildly. Only then did she realize that I—her husband, who never missed his morning and night texts to her—hadn't contacted her in a long time.

She went to the hospital, only to learn that I had been discharged three days earlier. She rushed back home, yet the house was empty.

Growing irritated, Jenny recalled the 99 missed calls from Rowena. Assuming I must have run to her mother to complain, she rushed back to the Shelton residence, fuming.

But just as Jenny reached the door, she heard Jackson's mocking voice from inside.

"The one who jilted Jenny right before the wedding was Ian, Mrs. Shelton. There's no need to be so hostile toward me. Now that Caleb's mother is dead, he'll be gone for good. I'll be your future son-in-law, so we should really learn to get along.

"After all, I've been kind enough to keep your little secret—the whole thing about how you staged that car accident to force Caleb to marry into the family—from Jenny all these years."

Jenny froze just as she was about to knock, her phone slipping from her hand and falling to the floor.

Ian sat across from Jenny at a cafe. With her rose-tinted glasses gone, the man in front of her was nothing but an ordinary man."Jenny, did you come to see me because you still can't forget about me?" Ian asked. "I feel the same way. I was tricked by that woman back then, but the truth is, I've always loved you. That's why I flew all the way back to see you as soon as you called. How about we start over, Jenny?" He took out a ring and looked at her affectionately, but all she felt was disgust. The intention behind Ian's so-called change of heart was obvious. He hadn't expected the Shelton family to thrive under Jenny's and Rowena's leadership. So now, he was regretting his decision back then.Jenny saw right through him, and she had no intention of entertaining him. But there was still something she needed to ask. "How are you doing after the heart transplant, Ian?"Ian looked confused. "Heart transplant? What are you talking about? I'm perfectly healthy."…After meeting Ia

Rowena said, "That was when I realized just how miserable Caleb's life had been all these years. He even refused the money I gave him. He gained nothing from staying by your side, so how could he possibly have been after your money?"Her voice broke by the time she finished speaking, guilt slowly consuming her.Rowena had seen me being mistreated more than once. But every time she thought about how Jenny was behind it, guilt stopped her from confronting Jenny. She was afraid that if she asked about it, Jenny would bring up the fake marriage from years ago. More than anything, she was terrified of losing her daughter. After all, Jenny was the only family Rowena had left in this world. She couldn't return to her own parents' home. And with her husband dead, his relatives were waiting for a chance to swallow up the inheritance he had left behind. If a rift formed between Jenny and her and someone took advantage of it, the consequences would be disastrous.Rowena looked up to glance

Jenny had punished me harshly countless times, but she felt bad for it every time. She couldn't even bear to say and watch when she ordered me to slap myself. At that thought, she suddenly looked up at Rowna. "Is Caleb's face okay?""His face was a bloody mess. It was hard to look at." Even Rowena couldn't bear the sight of it.She couldn't bring herself to say anything too harsh when she saw how devastated Jenny looked. Yet she still grumbled, "You can be so cruel sometimes. Punishing Caleb was one thing, but you even had people stand guard. "They stopped him from leaving until he was done with a thousand slaps. Even when I went there, they refused to let me stop him."If you really hate him that much, then at least let him go. He stayed by your side through the hardest seven years of your life. He doesn't owe us anything anymore."Jenny stared at her mother in disbelief. "How could that be? I only said that in the heat of the moment. I didn't mean for them to actually carry it

Rowena sighed.Tears welled up in Jenny's eyes. "It turned out I owed Caleb so much. I didn't know any of this. Where did you hide him? I'll spend the rest of my life making up to him."Rowena sighed again. "It's too late. Caleb has already left.""He left? Where did he go?" Jenny refused to believe it. "How could he leave when his mom's still so sick? I can get her treated, you should tell him to come back."Rowena dug out a death certificate from her handbag and handed it to Jenny."Caleb's mom died the night you guys were drunk driving and crashed into the power box, causing the hospital's power outage. He's not coming back now that he has nothing tying him here anymore."The piece of paper felt ice-cold in Jenny's hand, and the chill seemed to seep straight into her heart. Her hands trembled as she read the information on it again and again, muttering to herself in disbelief. "Dead? How is that possible? It was just an accidental power outage. How could his mother have died

"Are you threatening me now, Jackson?" Rage filled Rowena's voice.Jackson replied, "I wouldn't dare. I'm just stating the truth."Jenny's blood ran cold.At first, she'd thought there might have been some misunderstanding. But now, there was no mistaking it after overhearing the conversation from inside. Was Jackson really speaking the truth?Jenny's mind couldn't process all the information at once. She failed to notice that the voices inside had suddenly gone quiet.A moment later, the door was yanked open from the inside. "Well, look who's got the nerve to eavesdr—Jenny? Why… Why are you here?"Jackson had heard the noise and assumed someone had been listening in. He was ready to catch them red-handed, but he wasn't expecting to find Jenny behind the door.Thinking back to what he'd just said, his face turned pale. Carefully, he asked, "How long have you been standing there, Jenny?"Rowena, who had been calmly sitting before, shot to her feet in a panic. Her eyes closed in
