Chapter 3 Slap Him

Author: Raven Yates
My mind froze at that very moment. I couldn't understand what that woman was talking about. What did she mean, he sent men to hurt me so I couldn't come to Imperia?

The girl's tears wouldn't stop, as if she were the victim of a horrifying incident. "I know that pregnancy was an accident. I know I betrayed her, but we're already a family, and I couldn't just let go. I can't just watch you keep her in the dark either. It's unfair to her."

For a moment, I wanted Chris to deny it, but he confirmed the exact truth I didn't want to hear.

"Don't worry. She'll never find out, Nancy. Just stay with our child in Imperia."

Chris' phone rang, and the man on the other end said clearly, "Chris, Wendy's company is sending her to Imperia for work, and it's really important to her. Her promotion depends on this."

Chris didn't even miss a beat as he answered nonchalantly, "Set up an accident like usual. Make sure she can't come."

My heart sank. That explained everything. All this time, I had assumed that fate just had it out for me, but the truth was far more absurd than that.

I used to down coffee and energy drinks like water just so I could squeeze out more time for work, to make enough money, and raise a family with Chris as soon as I could. Now, everything left from those days was something bitter.

That made me snap.

I walked out from the shadows and stormed toward Chris. When I got close enough, I slapped him with all the strength I had.

The man I used to love looked stunned, like a deer caught in headlights. "Wendy? Why…"

I held my breath and bared my lips in a ferocious smile. "Surprised? Well, you must be smug for marrying your secretary and having a child behind my back."

He defended Nancy immediately, but his eyes were on me. There were even hints of panic in them. How disgusting. "I can explain!"

My lips pulled further.

When I spoke, my voice was cracking. "Explain what? Explain how you sent hitmen after me so I couldn't come to Imperia?"

During our first year in our long-distance relationship, I risked my life to save everything when the fire engulfed our house. I ran back in there just to save the pieces of memories I shared with Chris.

In the end, only a pile of ash remained despite my efforts. The hatred and loathing I had for myself nearly killed me. I cursed myself for forgetting to turn the stove off and letting the fire destroy everything.

Chris was on the other end of the video call, crying his heart out. He blamed himself for not being there for me when tough times came calling.

However, that concern eventually turned into something more robotic when I kept trying to see him out of longing.

It was always the same thing.

"I'll come back when I'm done, Wendy. It's for your own good."

Now, I knew that it had been a lie to cover up the existence of his other family. Now, I knew that he had done so at the cost of my safety. My tears finally fell in earnest as I slapped him again with my trembling hand. "Does our relationship mean nothing to you?"

He had done so much for me, like tracking down evidence and finding the right people.Jace leaned back in his chair, his tone teasing. "So, Ms. Gray, I hear congratulations are in order. You can finally relax now, right?"Heat crept up my face as I smiled in gratitude. "It's thanks to you. Otherwise, Chris and his influence would've been enough to silence me and sweep the case under the rug."I had been promoted to technical director of the department ever since I returned from my business trip to Imperia. And as for Jace's real identity… Honestly, I had my suspicions long ago. He was clearly more than just an ordinary employee, but I hadn't called him out on it. Yet, he revealed it without hesitation. He blinked at me, a hint of mischief twinkling in his eyes. "If you really want

"You coward! You're the murderer here, not me! You killed her! Admit it!"His gaze turned colder, his voice low and deliberate. "She's not dead."Nancy's face had already turned purple from the lack of oxygen, but she still managed to choke out a mocking laugh. "So what if she isn't? We both know that she'll never forgive you for the rest of her life, even if she's alive!"Just then, the doorbell rang.Chris shoved her aside, his brows knitting together as he strode toward the door. While the internet was busy buzzing about Chris, I had just regained consciousness in the hospital. And now, I was even being spoon-fed a meal my colleague, Jace Lexington, had brought me.The moment I moved my hand, a sharp, lingering pain shot up my arm. It was from the burn injuries left behind by the explosion. The spot on my wrist, where my watch should have sat, was now bare. It was rather symbolic as it was just like the love that had been taken from me. That was because anything of value, which included the watch, had been stripped away by the kidnappers. When I thought back to that moment, when I had my brush with death, my heart was immediately plunged with blazing hatred for Chris.Linda, who had come to visit me, let out a long sigh. "It's a good thing Jace noticed something was off that day. You hadn't replied to any of our messages for hours. It wasn't like you. Chris shot up from his seat, causing his chair to screech against the ground. His voice shook as he demanded, "What do you mean, she's gone missing?"The man answered carefully, "It had been raining for some time before we took her back to the mountains. The road was slippery and wet. The tires of the car she was in skidded, so…"The other man trailed off. Chris breathed heavily on his end as the man continued, "The car exploded not too long after it toppled. Our men all died, and her body wasn't found, but she…"Chris interjected solemnly, "Find her. I'm sure she's fine. I don't care how much money it takes. Find her."He was probably trying to convince himself that I survived even though the chances were slim. After all, not only was everyone in that car confirmed to be dead, but I had also been hogtied by his subordinates at the time. Even if the explosion hadn't killed me, I couldn't have survived for long in the mountains. The guy on the other end fell silent before gruntin
