Chapter 3

Autor: Layla Spice
Afternoons in the final year of high school felt especially long. The track and field lesson dragged into high noon.

The rubber‑surfaced track field turned into a giant sauna under the sweltering heat. After we completed the yard-long run, many of my classmates collapsed in the shade of the trees from exhaustion.

I twisted off the cap of a plastic water bottle and stood next to the furthest pole. While my eyes turned to the school building in the distance, I never stopped watching that figure that lingered at the finishing line.

Mandy was off today. She was usually one of the fastest runners in our class, but she had slowed down significantly after the fifth round, as though her legs were filled with lead. She kept swaying on her feet.

The moment she crossed the finish line and the gym teacher hit the stopwatch, her body suddenly trembled and collapsed onto the burning-hot latex without a sound.

“Someone fainted!”

“Mandy? Are you alright? Don’t scare me!”

Chaos erupted around the finishing line. Some girls surrounded her, shouting, but no one could actually lift her.

My mind went blank when I saw her fall. My self-contempt for the past three years and my fear of getting close instantly vanished.

By the time I came back to my senses, I had already forcefully pushed through the crowd and rushed to the very front. I crouched down wordlessly and pulled the pale Mandy onto my back. The moment her skin touched mine, I was startled by how hot her body was.

Listening to the weak breathing against my back, I turned to the stunned gym teacher and shouted, “I’m sending her to the infirmary!” After that, I carried her in a mad sprint toward the school building.

Her body was light as a feather back in high school, so light that my heart ached for her.

I clenched my teeth and held her up with all my strength, the sweat pouring down my face onto the concrete. It felt like forever those couple of yards.

“Doctor, please check on her! She fainted!” I kicked down the old wooden door to the infirmary, giving the school doctor a shock.

He set aside the newspaper he was reading and hurriedly instructed me to put Mandy on the most stable bed. He then checked under her eyelids, measured her blood pressure, and let out a sigh of relief.

“It’s nothing too serious. She got severe heatstroke from the hot weather, and it’s made worse by her low blood sugar and chronic malnutrition. Grab an ice pack from the back, and I’ll give her a glucose drip.

“You ran fast, kid, seeing as you’re panting like a dog. Rest here for now, and call me when the drip runs out.”

The doctor drew the curtain behind him, and a silence fell over the small infirmary. The only sound remaining was the drip of the IV.

I sat down on the plastic chair next to the bed, my chest heaving with my heavy breathing. My gaze was trained on Mandy’s face as it slowly regained some color from the medicine.

After about twenty minutes, Mandy’s lashes trembled violently, and she slowly opened her dazed eyes. She turned to see me, drenched in sweat and looking like a mess. Her gaze was confused, and then self-deprecating as she smirked without humor.

Her voice was barely audible. “It’s you… You helped me again, Zach.”

“The gym monitor was too far away at the time. I just happened to be nearby, so I may as well help you out.” I instinctively looked away, staring at the medicine cabinet in the corner as I spouted a lie even I did not believe.

Mandy stared at the half-empty bottle of glucose hanging above her head and was silent for a long time. Just as I thought she was falling asleep again, she suddenly turned to stare at me unblinkingly, her voice soft. “Zach, do you… really hate me?”

“What?” I looked at her, my heart jolting painfully.

“Because you keep avoiding me in class. When I try to talk to you or thank you, you storm away without even looking at me. But if you hate me so much, why did you give me the notebook yesterday… and save me so desperately today?”

Her voice was quiet, but I could hear the long-suppressed hurt within. As she spoke, a tear rolled down her cheek without warning, staining the white pillowcase.

My hands clenched into fists on my knees, my nails digging into my palm. When I looked at her exhausted, frail, and confused face, I felt like there was something stuck in my throat, choking me.

‘I don’t hate you,’ I thought to myself. ‘I like you. I like you so much that I feel useless and unworthy. I’m scared that just taking another look at you would make my love spill forth unbidden for the whole world to see.’

  • Where My Love Lands   Chapter 10

The southern city was still relatively hot in September. Tomorrow was my college orientation day, but I went back to my high school alone. It was summer vacation now, so the school was silent save for the wind rustling through the leaves in the yard.I walked past the trees where Mandy used to chill in the shade. I sat on the benches with their peeling red paint, staring dazedly at my offer letter from that summer college. When I saw my name on the letter, I smiled. I fulfilled my part of our rooftop promise that day, but the person who made me that promise never even got to say goodbye.“Zach.”Suddenly, I heard that familiar voice call my name, softly resounding through the silent shade. My body jolted, and I nearly dropped my offer letter.I raised my head abruptly, following the direction of the voice. The sunlight shone through the green leaves, scattering onto the ground. The girl wore a white dress and a high ponytail, standing a few yards away from me. She held an old

The day after that, all the seniors went back to school to clear out our lockers. The classroom was a mess after a night of wild partying, notes and papers strewn everywhere. Everyone was writing in each other’s farewell diaries, the air filled with laughter and sobs and the weight of an imminent goodbye.I took my empty backpack and sat in the second last row.Mandy’s desk at the front of the class was still empty. It even had a thin layer of dust on it. I brushed my finger across the coarse wooden surface and then pulled a yellowing hardcover notebook out of the deepest pocket in my bag. This was my secret.Every little detail from these three years was densely recorded inside its pages. She wore white sneakers today. She sighed seventeen times over her math test results. She felt so light when I carried her after her heat stroke. She said she loved the southern sun on that breezy rooftop. This diary contained the three-year history of my crush, the only tool in my s

The last bell rang on the final exam, and deafening cheers echoed throughout the school. Countless papers were thrown out of the windows, fluttering down in shards like a late snowstorm. The students rushing out of the building were filled with relief and ecstasy, some hugging their friends and weeping, while others swore they would stay up gaming until dawn tonight. I followed the crowd to the gates mechanically, still holding the pencil I had used for the exams.I did not see my cheering classmates or the parents waiting outside with flowers. From the second I left the exam hall, my gaze was constantly scanning the crowd for a familiar face.Although I knew she had been taken to another state a week ago and would not be here, my feet still took me through the crowd uncontrollably.“Zach! Over here!” Kevin squeezed past the people to hug my shoulder, the fleshy folds on his face trembling with excitement. “We’re free, we’re finally free! For our class party tonight, do you wann

The results of the mock exam were released on a Friday afternoon, displayed on a cheerfully decorated noticeboard. I stood at the back of the crowd, looking for our names on the board. Mandy was seventeenth, and I was thirty-first.We were both in the top fifty. I let out a sigh of relief, my hands in my pockets and my lips curving into a smile. When I headed back to class to cash in my promise with Mandy that day on the rooftop, though, I noticed the atmosphere in the room was a little strange.Mandy’s desk was empty save for a few books she had left behind. Kevin ran to me in a panic, grabbing my arm. His face was pale. “Bad news, Zach. Mandy took the day off!”“What? Why now?” I frowned."I heard that her mother met our homeroom teacher today. She took all of Mandy’s files and books away!” Kevin’s voice was trembling. “Ms. Law said that Mandy’s mother transferred her to another state to take the entrance exams. She even changed Mandy’s number so that her father couldn’t

It was less than two weeks until the last district-wide mock exam. After that day on the rooftop, Mandy had changed completely. She no longer stared out the window dazedly, and she kept that tear-stained application form safely among the pages of her textbook. Every day during self-study, she would be the first at her desk memorizing vocabulary. Between classes, she would bring that blue notebook full of math questions to my desk right on schedule. “Zach, I still can't figure out how to solve this tough conic‑section bonus question.”Mandy pushed her question paper toward her, her ponytail swaying with the momentum. Her gaze on me was not as helpless as it was two weeks ago, now filled with a hint of resolve. I did not waste my breath saying anything. I simply took the paper from her and traced the diagram, explaining quietly, “Find the intersection between the curve and the straight line. Don't try to brute force it. Use geometric properties to work out the slope relationship

During recess, the students were all desperately revising their questions under the creaking ceiling fan. My phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket. It was a message from Mandy. [Zach, can you come meet me on the rooftop? Just for ten minutes, I'm begging you.]Those last three words did not give me any time to hesitate. I kept away the exercise book I had been working through halfway and crept out of the classroom. The wind was strong on the rooftop. Mandy stood with her back facing me, her slender body leaning against the metal railing. She clutched her college application papers tightly in her hands. “Why'd you call me up here? Shouldn't you use this time to do a few more question papers in class before the exams?” I stopped a few feet away from her, my hands in my pockets. Mandy slowly turned around and showed me her application. The Ivy League college that had been her first choice had been crossed off, replaced with the southern college I always said I was aiming for.
