Chapter 5

Author: Orange Candy
"Susan, did you ever spend time in the military?"

I stiffened, not quite sure how to respond. "For a few weeks as a mandatory course for university… Why are you asking?"

"Well, I was just considering transferring you to the security department, considering how you stand at attention so well. Is that fine with you?"

"No, please don't!"

"Then get in here already!"

At that moment, I wanted to call my brother and ask him what had happened to Charles these past few years for him to develop such a sharp tongue.

Sitting at his desk, he casually crossed his legs, long fingers tapping the keyboard as his sharp eyes scanned the screen, his lips curled in a smirk.

"You wrote this quarterly report?"

I felt a little uneasy. "Yes, sir."

"It's pretty well-written..." He nodded.

"Thank you, I'll continue doing my best!"

Then, he looked up at me. "It reminds me of Romeo and Juliet.

"Rewrite this. I want it done before I get off work."

I was heartbroken, but backing down wasn't my speed. It was just a report! No way I'd let it defeat me!

And so, I kept writing until it was 10 at night.

"Are you still not done? It's way past dinner time, I'm hungry…" Charles grumbled, sitting in his luxurious chair, and I felt like I was sitting on needles.

An hour later, the food he ordered finally arrived.

"Come on, eat up! You won't be finishing anytime soon, so what's a few more minutes?"

Please, could someone put a mute button on him?

How could someone be so annoying?!

-

By the time I got home, it was already way past midnight. I barely had the energy to wash up before collapsing onto my bed.

Lately, my time and energy have been so drained by work that I haven't even dreamed in a long time.

Halfway through the night, I heard my phone ringing through my sleepy fog. It was the lawyer I had hired before going abroad. "Miss Stone, Miss Harper has refused to compensate you, but Mr. Carter has agreed to pay it in her stead if you go and meet him in person."

What, so now he wanted to see me? What was he playing at?

"Do I look like I need the money? Tell them that it's a matter of principle, and that I'll sue Lulu for deliberately damaging private property if I don't get any compensation. They'll do what's best for them."

By the time I hung up, I was completely awake.

Feeling parched, I went downstairs to get some water. That’s when I noticed the dining room light was still on.

I nearly screeched out of fright, but it was just Charles sitting there, hard at work.

"Only guilty people are scared of ghosts, you know."

I mentally grumbled, pouring a glass of water for myself and walking over to him.

"Oh, are you modifying my quarterly report?"

He shook his head and sighed. "I do have to show this to the company's shareholders, after all. If I showed them your report as it was, they might've gotten heart attacks over our company's imminent demise."

I wanted to tear him to shreds, but I quickly reminded myself that I was currently living under his roof.

"Fine, do that. I'll go back to bed."

When I turned around, I slipped, landing right in his lap. My lips brushed against his chest, and my upper body pressed against his chest. No matter how you spun it, this compromising position was far too intimate for a man and woman in the dead of night.

To make matters worse, I landed in a terrible spot.

His gaze flickered to my lips, and his breathing grew heavier. I could even hear his heartbeat and smell the fresh scent of aftershave.

"W-Well, I'm glad the water didn't spill!" I quickly found an excuse to stand up, yet his hand was still resting lighting at my waist.

"You know, I never realized people could slip on thin air." He withdrew his hand and turned away, fingers typing quickly on his keyboard.

"Good night, sleep tight! I'm heading back to my room!"

And with that, I bolted back upstairs.

People change, and no one stays in place forever, trailing behind someone else.Charles wrapped an arm around my waist and kissed me, lightly nibbling my lip when he pulled away. "Focus, my love."I was so embarrassed my face burned. I thought I got used to his antics, but he just kept them coming. After the ceremony, we went straight to the airport. He wanted to show me the 'shining, shimmering, splendid world', after all. Both our parents were worried that he'd bring me to some remote mountainous rainforest out in the middle of nowhere, so they spent days reviewing his itinerary before reluctantly approving."I feel like I'm dreaming, Susan. Pinch me."I rested my head on his shoulder and gave him a soft peck on the cheek. "Did that work?" His gaze darkened and he leaned in to kiss me, his hand at the back of my head as he deepened the kiss. "Do you know what my biggest regret is?" I was kissed out of my wits, so I could only shake my head. What in the world could someo

In the end, Charles kissed me. By the time he let go, my legs went weak. - Just like that, we were officially together. During the new year, both our families gathered for dinner. Charles, whose mouth was once laced with poison, had now switched to endlessly spouting praise and sweet words, no matter the time, the place, nor the target.Once my parents found out his target was me and not Tony, they changed their attitudes towards him completely. The most excited ones, however, were Charles' parents. They'd long since accepted the fact that their son, who'd been rebellious for more than half of his life, would end up an eternal bachelor, so this was nothing short of a holiday surprise for them. I received enough gifts that it was almost overwhelming. In a sense, this was a bountiful holiday season. The only one who treated this with complete calm was my brother, who looked at Charles with a scrutinizing gaze. "Tony, when did you find out that Charles had a crush on me?"

My brother's smile widened, and he sighed. "Wow, my spoiled little sister's all grown up!"The next day, Charles moved into my brother's house."Charles' house was attacked by a wild boar, so it's under renovation. He'll be staying here for a while."Was it a coincidence, or was it done on purpose?I squinted heavily at Charles' big smile. My brother hadn't even found a girlfriend even though he was approaching his thirties, and I wasn't going to let Charles get there first!"Sure, he can stay in the room across mine." I was confident that I could keep a watchful eye on him, 24/7. -When it was almost the new year, the three of us went back to our home country. Charles prepared me a long down coat for me, saying that it was the same brand he wore when he climbed the Himalayas.I hated the cold, so I barely went outside anyway. My brother was busy visiting relatives with our parents, so Charles came to keep me company. Lately, he'd been forced to go on a series of blind da

"I only did that to get you to meet me! We were so good in the past, so I thought you'd always be by my side."I stopped in my tracks, turning to look at him as if he told a particularly funny joke. "Don't act like you care all of a sudden, Lucas. You knew what I was bothered about, yet you kept on pushing my boundaries. Now you're all miserable, and I've become some sort of petty villainess in your story. Well, if you didn't care, then just forget it!"I can forget you no problem, and I'm sure you can forget all about me, so don't come see me ever again. Can't you spare me this last shred of dignity?"Lucas didn't follow this time. This country was warm all year round, yet he felt like he was sinking helplessly into an endless frigid sea. As her silhouette blurred into the distance, he thought back to the past. They went through high school and university together. Back then, her smile was even brighter than the sun, and when she confessed to him, his heart skipped a beat.At so

The moment he saw me step out of the car, his body visibly tensed, even trembling slightly. Not that any of that mattered. Before leaving home, I'd already made up my mind to draw a clear line between myself and the past. I was determined to be as stubborn as I was when I wasted seven years foolishly devoting myself to Lucas. He still hadn't left by the time night fell. I sat there at the table, eating noodles and stealing a few glances outside the window. Under the dim yellow glow of the streetlights, he looked particularly lonely."Who's that? Are we being haunted by a vengeful ghost or something?" Charles walked in dressed in light-colored linen loungewear. Holding a mug of coffee in one hand and resting the other in his pocket, he looked like he was striking a pose for a magazine. "Lucas." I muttered, worried that he might call the police and make a scene. He let out an exaggerated, drawn-out "Ohhhh", clearly having heard of him before. "So that's the idiot from the

As I rushed upstairs, I couldn't shake the feeling of his gaze lingering on my back. The next morning, Charles came downstairs with dark circles under his eyes. "Sir, did you pull an all-nighter writing that report?" I asked, surprised. Was writing a report actually really hard for him?"Just call me Charles when we're at home."I lowered my head and continued eating, trying not to laugh at him. That morning, he wore sunglasses to the company. In the break room, everyone gathered around me, gossiping. "Susan, what's up with Mr. Lawson today?" "Who knows? Maybe he just wanted to change up his style."-Finally, it was my day off. Charles wanted to be a proper host, take me sightseeing, and treat me to some good food. Just as I got in his Maybach, I got a call from an unknown number back home. No one other than my parents, close family and my lawyer should have had this number, so I picked up.On the other end was Lulu's sobbing voice. "I'm sorry for disturbing you, Susan,
