Chapter 3

Author: Bright Lights
“I thought something serious had happened. She was just stabbing a stuffed doll with scissors.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

“What do you mean, just stabbing a stuffed doll? Doesn't that prove how much aggression she's holding inside?

“Right now it's a doll. Next time, it could be us!”

Ethan rubbed his forehead, then took my hand and tried to calm me down.

“Claire, Mom already said it. Hannah's the kind of girl who can't even bring herself to step on an ant. How could she possibly murder her whole family?

“You're reading too much into it. She's probably just under a lot of stress because of the exam and needed some way to let it out.”

Just stress from the college entrance exam?

I thought about it.

Maybe it really was possible that the pressure had pushed Hannah over the edge in my previous life.

So first thing the next morning, I called her school and told them she'd be absent.

Then I took the whole family to an amusement park.

When Hannah was younger, she'd loved it whenever I took her there.

But as she got older and school became more demanding, she'd had less and less time to just have fun.

Maybe one full day of relaxing and enjoying herself really could ease some of that pressure.

Maybe it could even change what happened to our family.

With that hope in mind, I spent the entire day enthusiastically dragging Hannah from ride to ride, determined to make sure she enjoyed herself.

And she really did seem happy.

Her smile was bright and completely unguarded.

Margaret busied herself taking pictures of Hannah and our son, Noah, while they played.

Ethan leaned toward me and lowered his voice.

“See? I told you Hannah was just stressed about the exam. Look how happy she is now.”

I nodded.

Watching Hannah laugh so freely, I finally felt some of the tension in my chest ease.

Then, in the very next second, my eyes widened in horror.

Hannah and Noah were sitting together on a roller coaster.

And just before the ride started, I saw Hannah unfasten Noah's safety restraint.

That roller coaster went completely upside down.

Without the restraint, Noah would fall from the ride.

The operator was already reaching for the controls.

My voice cracked as I screamed,

“Wait!”

The operator stopped and turned toward me.

I didn't even think.

I rushed over and pulled both Hannah and Noah out of the ride area.

Ethan and Margaret followed, completely confused.

Only when we reached an open space and I finally stopped did they ask,

“What happened? Why wouldn't you let Hannah and Noah keep riding?”

I pointed at Hannah.

“Ask her!”

Hannah looked up at me innocently.

“Mom, I don't know what you mean.”

“Claire, what are you doing?”

Margaret clearly didn't like the way I was pointing at Hannah.

She stepped in front of her protectively and frowned at me.

Even Ethan looked unhappy with the way I was treating our daughter.

Seeing the entire family instinctively defend Hannah made me feel both desperate and powerless.

“Hannah unfastened Noah's safety restraint on the roller coaster!”

I'd thought that would finally make Ethan and Margaret understand how serious this was.

Instead, they stared at me in disbelief.

“Hannah would never do something like that. Are you sure you didn't see it wrong?

“Maybe one of the employees forgot to secure Noah properly.”

Noah immediately nodded too.

“Yeah. It wasn't Hannah's fault.”

  • Why Did My Daughter Do That?   Chapter 10

Hearing how casually Ethan said it made my blood boil.I couldn't take it anymore.I stormed into the room and slapped him across the face.“She is your biological daughter!“You knew your mother was abusing her, and instead of stopping it, you covered for her and pretended you didn't know!“And then you actually helped her try to sell Hannah!”I spun toward Margaret and pointed at her.“And you!“You're a woman too. You grew up in a time when girls were treated as less than boys. You know exactly what that kind of discrimination feels like.“You were a victim of it yourself, so how could you turn around and do the same thing to Hannah?”Margaret said nothing. But Ethan, furious after being slapped, spat back,“Daughter? Give me a break.“If you hadn't threatened me with Noah's life back then, I would've thrown Hannah into the ocean and let her drown years ago!”The moment he said that, a memory slammed into me.The summer I was pregnant with Noah, Ethan had taken Hannah

  • Why Did My Daughter Do That?   Chapter 9

“They're trying to sell my daughter!”I was so frantic that tears filled my eyes. The female officer immediately reassured me.“Don't worry. We're here now. We won't let them get away with it.”She and another officer rushed me into the patrol car.As we sped in the direction Ethan had gone, they made calls to have his car tracked.I sat in the back seat, my chest unbearably heavy.I still couldn't believe it.The man who had shared my bed for all these years, and the mother-in-law I'd trusted completely, were the ones who had destroyed my daughter. And I couldn't bear to imagine what would've happened to Hannah if I hadn't discovered the truth in time.Maybe after selling her off, Ethan and Margaret would've come home and told me Hannah had rebelled, skipped the college entrance exam, and bought a plane ticket overseas.I'd never once doubted either of them. And after everything that had happened lately, I'd already been so disappointed in Hannah.I might've believed thei

  • Why Did My Daughter Do That?   Chapter 8

Only now, looking back, did I finally realize the truth.Margaret really had been hitting Hannah all those years ago.Hannah had only stopped coming to me because she'd learned I wasn't going to help her.Without realizing it, I'd become an accomplice to Margaret's abuse.I couldn't even imagine how desperate Hannah must have felt. She'd been abused since she was little. And every time she tried to ask me for help, she'd been left completely alone. No wonder she'd murdered our entire family after the college entrance exam.Margaret had planned to wait until Hannah finished high school, then marry her off for money behind my back.No wonder Hannah had said in my previous life,“You were all too good to me. That's why you had to die!”That kindness had never been real.It had only been the kindness I'd imagined. For all these years, I'd had no idea what Hannah was going through.I'd stood by and let her be abused.Guilt crashed over me so violently that I couldn't hold bac

  • Why Did My Daughter Do That?   Chapter 7

For the past few days, Hannah had seemed so happy that I'd assumed she'd given up on killing us.So I hadn't checked the camera again. But when I pulled up the footage now, I discovered something horrifying. On the screen, Margaret walked into Hannah's room carrying a bowl of nourishing soup, a warm, grandmotherly smile on her face. The instant the bedroom door closed behind her, her expression changed. Her eyes turned cold and vicious. She slammed the bowl down on Hannah's desk, grabbed her by the ear, and hissed,“You little brat. Pretending to dote on you these past few days has been driving me crazy.“Your mother keeps insisting you're going to hurt the whole family. As if a useless girl like you could ever pull off something like that.”She twisted Hannah's ear harder.“Go on. Tell me. Are you really capable of it?”Then she started slapping Hannah over and over again.Hannah endured it without fighting back. Her voice trembled.“No.”“Exactly. I knew you weren't.”

  • Why Did My Daughter Do That?   Chapter 6

We were doing all right financially, but we definitely weren't wealthy enough to casually send Hannah overseas for a vacation. And with the college entrance exam coming up, it made even less sense for her to travel at a time like this.So I'd turned her down. When I told the therapist, he immediately said,“That may be the trigger.“Kids her age don't always understand how hard money is to earn. If she sees her classmates getting something, she may feel entitled to the same thing.“When that expectation is denied, it's entirely possible for resentment to build.”So we'd finally found the root of the problem. But I didn't feel relieved. If anything, I felt devastated.I couldn't believe that in my previous life, Hannah had murdered our entire family simply because I wouldn't give her money for an overseas trip.I was disappointed in her.But if giving her what she wanted could stop her from killing us, Ethan and I were willing to do it.We scraped together enough money for

  • Why Did My Daughter Do That?   Chapter 5

On the camera feed, Hannah was sitting at her desk.Neatly arranged in front of her were three things.A kitchen knife.A can of gasoline. And a lighter. They were the exact same things she'd used to murder our entire family in my previous life. There was no way I could be mistaken. My family's deaths and my rebirth hadn't been some anxiety-induced delusion. They were real.My whole body started shaking as I grabbed Ethan and yanked him awake. At first, he looked annoyed. But the moment he saw what was on the camera feed, he froze. This time, he had no choice but to believe me.Everything I'd told him about Hannah murdering our entire family in my previous life was true.We didn't tell Margaret or Noah.Margaret was getting older, and Noah was still too young. We were afraid the truth would terrify them.Instead, Ethan and I stayed up together, trying to figure out why Hannah wanted to kill us all.Ethan spoke first.“Could it be because we had Noah? Maybe Hannah rese
