Gustavo had married my mother just three months after my father was gone.

He was a widower, having lost his wife in a terrible car accident just a few years before my father died. He had one son, who lived out of the house and had already started his own family. I didn’t know the specifics of my mother’s second nuptials, but I knew it had been negotiated like a contract.

But in any case, I liked him.

He was kind, affectionate, and treated my mom well. When I saw them together, they seemed more like friends than man and wife. Maybe that was why their relationship worked so well. My mother wanted a man to take care of her, and Gustavo didn’t want to be lonely.

It could be worse, so I let it be.

We went to the Tuscan Rose together and entered the lobby. Several chandeliers hung from the ceiling, the crystals on fire as the light shone through the prisms. White vases with fresh flowers lined the tables and counters, and mirrors on the wall showed how expansive the room really was. I loved the energy the second I stepped inside, loved the excitement of the guests as they checked in at the front desk. It was impeccably clean, a visual representation of the Romano family name.

“I suggest you start with a concierge position.” Instead of leading me to the back where the offices were located, he stopped in the lobby. “You know so much about this city, and you’re so good with people. It’s a great start.”

I looked up at him in surprise, finding no comfort in the warm look he gave me. He was a tall man, taller than my father had been, and his dark skin showed his exotic origins. He wore eyeglasses on the bridge of his nose. In conversation, he was a polite and restrained man, but when his eyes lit up with warmth, he was a whole new person. “I’m not interested in the concierge position. I was hoping to shadow you, to look at the bookkeeping, and take on whatever other managerial positions I can assist with.”

His smile never faded. “I realize that, but—”

“Don’t listen to my mother. I know how she feels about this, but this is my legacy, and I intend to hold on to it.” I wouldn’t get married just to have another man control my company. I didn’t need anyone’s assistance but my own.

His smile slowly faded. “This is her hotel, Sofia. I don’t have a lot of say in the matter.”

“You obviously do if you’re running it.” I stood my ground and refused to back down. I would only get what I wanted in life if I fought for it. It didn’t make sense that my mother’s second husband got to manage what belonged to our family. It should either be my mother or me.

He sighed as he lowered his gaze. “I was under the impression you needed money.”

“Yes. I’ve got to move out as quickly as possible.”

He chuckled. “I can imagine. But I can’t offer you a position as a manager or anything of that nature. You had excellent marks at university, but experience is more important in an occupation like this. You’ll have to start at the bottom.”

“I never said I had a problem with that.” I didn’t expect to be given everything just because of my last name, but I did expect the chance to prove my worthiness. “I’ll take the concierge position if you teach me everything about running this hotel. I can work with you in the morning and take the concierge position in the evenings.”

“You mean business, don’t you?”

“Always.” I placed one hand on my hip, looking up at my stepfather without budging an inch. I refused to let this go without at least fighting for it. Maybe the concierge job would pay enough to cover my rent, and with enough time, I would prove to my stepfather and mother that I was capable of taking over when the time was right.

Gustavo was the man in the relationship, but he possessed much more compassion than she ever did. He didn’t seem to harbor the same sexist viewpoint she did. “Alright. Let’s keep this between us—for now.”

I moved into his chest and hugged him. “Thank you, Gustavo. It means so much to me.”

EpilogueSofiaThe sun had just set on the square of the bazaar, so the flames from the bonfires started to burn brightly. There was music coming from everywhere, followed by the sounds of clinking pots, camels moving around the area, and the occasional altercation. My husband took me by the hand and guided me through the chaos. My husband.I could call him that again…and I would never take it for granted.“You still know the way?”He glanced down at me with a handsome smile on his face. “Baby, I know everything.”I laughed then gave him a playful tickle on the side.He didn’t react the way I would because his body was hard, with just muscle and skin.He guided me around the fire dancers and cobras then took me down a separate alleyway that was much quieter than the rest of the bazaar. There was a pottery stand and a lone purple tent.He pointed. “That’s it.”When Hades had told me the story of the gypsy and the fortune she’d read, I believed it immediately. Throughout our entire rela

HadesSofia moved back in to the house. My closet was full of her clothes again. The top drawer of the dresser was full of her delicate panties and bras. On the bathroom counter were all her hair supplies, makeup, and her favorite perfume. It felt the way it used to.Her mother came as part of the deal and returned to her old bedroom downstairs. I could negotiate her removal, but since it was important to Sofia, I let it be. Besides, we always had a trusted babysitter on call. Now when we had dinner together, we had true privacy. Sofia didn’t have to breastfeed during her meals so her food wouldn’t grow cold. And when we hit the sheets, we never had to be interrupted by a crying baby.It was like a second honeymoon. She sat across from me now on the terrace, wearing a long-sleeved sweater with her curled hair pinned back. She slowly ate her food and looked up at me from time to time, letting the silence linger because she didn’t feel the need to fill it with unnecessary conversation.

I got Andrew ready before I called Hades. He answered right away, but he was clearly in a bad mood. “Yeah?”He hadn’t spoken to me that way in a long time, so I let it slide. “Everything okay?”“Just a shitty day.”“I was going to see if we could come over, but I’ll give you your space.” It was another reason why I missed being married, because I couldn’t comfort him when he walked through the door. I couldn’t be a part of his bad days as well as his good days if I had a different address. I had to give him space…even if I didn’t want to. “I’ll talk to you later.”He didn’t respond. He lingered on the phone but didn’t have anything to say.“Bye.”“Baby, I want you to come over. Both of you.”It’d been so long since he’d last called me baby that it brought tears to my eyes. It was such an affectionate endearment, a warm blanket that wrapped around me so tightly. I preferred it over my real name, at least from his lips. I was glad he couldn’t see me so he wouldn’t have to see how red an

I entered the factory and moved down to the basement floor, where all the equipment was set up. Clouds of steam rose to the ceiling and were carried outside through the pipes. There were two cooks making the crystal, while other men boxed the product and prepared to ship it.Damien was there, watching everyone to make sure their jobs were done right. He may have screwed up with me, but he was a good boss. He instilled fear into the men, along with a healthy dosage of inspiration. He watched the containers being placed on the pallet so they could be taken to the surface in the industrial elevator.I came up behind him. “You got a minute?”Damien looked at me over his shoulder, his arms crossed over his chest. “I’ve got shit to do. I never have a minute.”My eyes narrowed in annoyance. “It’s important.”He rolled his eyes. “Everything in this business is important.” He walked off to the office on the other side of the room. It had been overtaken by Maddox at one point, but now it was ou

I grabbed the top of my glass and slid it toward him. “Just because you’re my brother doesn’t mean I won’t shatter this into pieces then shove the shards up your ass.”His response was completely inappropriate; he grinned like an idiot. “I missed you.”I cocked an eyebrow.“You know, this huffy-puffy wolf guy. I love pissing you off. It’s so much fun.”I took a drink and ignored what he said.“So, when do they move in again?”“We’re just taking things slow right now.”“But have you seen how cute your kid is?”“Yes,” I said sarcastically. “I made him.”“Wouldn’t you want to see him every day?”I didn’t reply because the answer was obvious.“Wouldn’t you want to see your woman every day?”I’d started to miss her on the nights she was gone. There was a distinct hole in my bed where she was supposed to be. It had happened so quickly, I could hardly believe it.“I think they should move back in, and you should get remarried. What’s the point in waiting? You know it’s going to happen anyway

I stared at his perfect physique and felt my heart race as I waited for him to reveal more.He dug his thumbs into his waistband and then pushed his bottoms off until he was naked. He was already hard, like he already had something in mind. “I want that blow job.”This was the Hades I missed, the authoritative, bossy man who wasn’t afraid to tell me what he wanted because he wasn’t afraid to want me in the first place. He’d spent so much time acting like I meant nothing to him, probably wanting to believe his own lie. But he’d now stopped doing that and wore his desires on his sleeve. It was already a major improvement.I would gladly suck his dick every night if he would be my husband again.I pulled his t-shirt over my head so I was just in my pink thong. I wasn’t as confident as I used to be because the stretch marks over my stomach and thighs were so noticeable on my body, but all those doubts disappeared when he looked at me like that. He could spend his evening with anyone else,
