Chapter 3

Author: Eaven
I ended the call before I had to hear another word in Murphy's nauseating voice.

Outside the airport, I spotted Cyril and waved to him.

Then tires screamed. A car door slammed. Familiar footsteps pounded toward me.

It was Ethan.

I didn't want another fight. I sent Cyril a text telling him to meet me at the gate.

The flight to the Frostveil Tundra ran only once a week. If I missed it, I didn't know whether I would still be alive by the next departure.

Ethan tried to grab my arm but was a step too slow.

He settled for seizing my duffel bag instead.

The sudden force made me stumble. I had no choice but to turn and face him.

"Let go." I hauled on the bag, but after years confined to bed, I had no chance of overpowering an Alpha.

"Where are you going with Cyril?"

"That's none of your business."

"Jennifer, your health won't survive a long trip."

"Tell me where you want to go. I'll go for you."

"With Murphy?" A flicker of guilt crossed his face, then vanished.

"Murphy said she wants to do her part to help you keep going."

Do her part. She had done her part all the way into his bed. My face went cold.

"No need. I'll go myself."

"I knew it. You really are better. That relapse seven days ago was an act." I looked up in shock.

Right. We were mates, bound by the oldest bond the Moon Goddess bestowed upon our kind, a connection etched into the soul, impossible to sever.

When I was in pain, he felt an inexplicable ache too.

"Do you have any idea what I went through to rush back seven days ago..." Ethan touched his upper arm. His dark clothing hid the blood seeping through.

"Ethan, you promised to fulfill Jennifer's wishes." Murphy had appeared at Ethan's side without my noticing. Her fingers were bandaged, a mark left by her fake injury moments ago.

She wore a black jacket over her clothes, probably Ethan's, and a sliver of navy fabric peeked out from underneath.

"You can't go on a trip with your lover."

I pulled harder on my bag, but to an Alpha, it looked like deliberate provocation. He snatched the bag from me, using too much force. The bag tore open, and its contents spilled across the ground.

The glass vial of silver liquid hit the ground hard.

The crack of breaking glass went straight through my heart.

The painkiller that was supposed to carry me through this journey was gone.

In that moment, all I could hear was the dull thud of my own heartbeat echoing inside my skull, each beat a heavy blow that sent numbness tingling through my limbs.

I wanted to be sick, but even that was beyond my numb body.

I dropped to my knees and tried to blot up the spilled medicine with clothes from my duffel bag.

A hand reached down to help me. It was Cyril.

"Jennifer, don't cry." I touched my cheek. I hadn't even realized tears were streaming down my face.

"Jennifer, even without that medicine, you still have me."

"I'll stay with you."

My heart steadied, just a little.

"Mr. Anderson, Jennifer is still sick. Please stop hurting her."

The plea snapped something inside Ethan.

Ethan snatched the ticket from Cyril's hand.

"Sick?" His voice dripped with contempt.

"She's sick, but still well enough to come seduce you?"

He didn't even glance at it before tearing Cyril's ticket to shreds.

No. I tried to lunge forward and grab it.

But I crashed to the ground.

"Ethan, Jennifer hates being called on her lies. Let's go." Murphy soothed him and took the shredded ticket from his hand.

I reached for the pieces.

But just before handing them to me, Murphy stopped.

Her hand rose into the air, and the fragments of the ticket fluttered up, then drifted down, piece by piece, onto me as I lay on the ground.

"Murphy, you were right. Jennifer really did fake it so she could run away with Cyril."

Their lips were moving, but I could no longer hear what they were saying.

I tried to speak, but blood surged out first, soaking through the scraps of the ticket.

The words "Frostveil Tundra" vanished beneath a deep red stain.

Then I couldn't see them at all.

"I want to live. I have to."I wanted to live, not to punish anyone and not to wait for anyone to save me, but simply because... I still wanted to see tomorrow's sunrise. My consciousness blurred in the agony, and only one thought remained: I can't die here.I didn't know how I survived those first hours. Maybe it was survival instinct. Maybe it was fate's mercy. I felt a sudden rush of cold that balanced the searing heat. The relief didn't last. Extreme cold swept over me at blinding speed. I tried to curl up, but my limbs were already too stiff to obey. Snowflakes landed on my eyelashes, on my cheeks, melting into freezing droplets that quickly hardened into ice.I felt as if I had been frozen solid. When awareness returned, pain came with it, as though every bone in my body had been shattered and re

"Ethan, please untie me. My wrists hurt." Madness flickered in his eyes."Hurt?""When you left Jennifer to face all of this alone, did she hurt?""I didn't want this. I was just afraid you'd leave me."Ethan let out a cold laugh."I never knew you were this selfish and cold, Murphy."Ethan gripped Murphy's chin and forced her to meet his eyes.Murphy shrank back, her voice small and frightened."I just wanted to live." To have a good life. The words detonated something inside Ethan. He slapped Murphy across the face."So your survival meant Jennifer had to die?"Murphy's cheek swelled immediately. The stinging pain blazed across her skin like wildfire, burning through what was left of her composure."What right do you have to judge me?" She lunged at Ethan and crashed to the floor with him."You didn't visit her for three years. You accused her of betrayal. You slept with me while wolfsbane tore her apart.""And now you want to play the grieving mate and beg her forgiveness?""Begging

Ethan forced his breathing back into rhythm and crushed every emotion beneath a mask of calm.Maeve let out a long sigh."Jennifer stopped her treatment a long time ago.""No. She couldn't have. Jennifer was seeing Cyril. That's right! She wouldn't leave her new lover."Ethan pulled out the memory crystal, the one showing Cyril kissing Jennifer."This is a crude fake. They swapped the face and the clothes. Cyril's face, but a woman's hands."Ethan stared at the hand stroking Jennifer's forehead in the image. It was small and slender, clearly a woman's.Maeve studied the crystal closely, then murmured a few incantations over it.With a soft crack of fracturing stone, the projected image transformed completely.Where Cyril had been, Maeve now appeared.Ethan's whole body went rigid. He had been wrong about Jennifer from the very beginning.A thought struck him, and he tore through his bag.A torn ticket fell out, most of it covered in blood. He tried to bend down and pick it up, but his

We can buy new things."All Ethan wanted was to escape this place, to escape everything that reminded him of Jennifer. The dealers who had sold Murphy the herbs seemed to know too much and had started blackmailing her. She needed a way to silence them. The doorbell rang.Ethan opened the door. It was Maeve."Ethan, we need to talk.""Sweetheart, Maeve was Jennifer's closest friend.""You can't trust what she says."She tried to take Ethan's hand and lead him away, but Ethan stepped back to avoid her."Head to the airport first, sweetheart. I'll be right behind you."Murphy didn't argue this time. She even thoughtfully closed the door behind them."Ethan, this potion can tell you whether Jennifer is truly dead." Maeve produced a wide-mouthed bottle filled with a dark green liquid."Even when a mate bond is severed, or goes silent because one mate is too weak, it leaves a mark in the blood.""If that mark remains, one
