Chapter 2

Penulis: Mountain River
I didn't know how long I had been standing in the rain...

Not until Andy finally walked out of that room.

When he saw me, he immediately put some distance between himself and Sonia, who was following behind him. He approached me with his familiar, gentle smile, acting as if nothing had happened.

"Why are you standing out here in the cold? Aren't you worried you'll catch a cold?"

He took off his jacket and put it over my shoulders.

"Come on, the family dinner's about to start. Don't keep the Don waiting."

The car took us into the family estate. Andy held my hand as we walked into the hall.

"Where have you been these past few days? You didn't even send me a message," I asked quietly.

"You've always wanted a custom dress from a master designer, right? I went to Manil to find him in the past few days. I left in such a hurry, I forgot to tell you," he replied.

I looked up at him. "So, where's the dress?"

The smile on his face was as perfect as ever. "It's not ready yet. Maybe we'll just save it to use as your wedding dress."

I managed a smile, but it never reached my eyes.

The dance began.

Sonia showed up fashionably late.

The moment she appeared at the entrance, the entire hall fell silent. She was wearing the wedding dress I had always dreamed of, stunning and radiant. It was so beautiful that everyone was left breathless.

As soon as Sonia spotted Andy, she hurried toward us. In her rush, she stumbled and twisted her ankle, falling to the floor and scraping her knee.

"How can you be so careless!"

Andy couldn't hold back anymore and rushed over. He took out his handkerchief and gently wiped the blood and dirt from Sonia's knee.

It was the handkerchief I had knitted for his birthday last year. He had never let it out of his sight. Now, it was stained with another woman's blood.

"I'm fine, Andy... It just hurts a little," Sonia said, her voice shaky as she sobbed.

Right then, the music started. All around us, the other couples began to lead their partners onto the dance floor.

Andy met my eyes, offering just the right amount of apology. "Leona, I'll take Sonia to get her wound treated first. Wait for me. I'll be back soon to dance with you."

He left me with those words as he helped Sonia up before quickly leaving the hall with her.

Couples after couples began their dances in each other's arms.

I sat alone in a corner, my hands clenched tightly in my lap. No one came near me. I could feel the stares. Some were sympathetic, some pitying, but most were sneering at me.

"Wow, even being the Don's adopted daughter couldn't help her keep her fiancé?"

"I heard a long time ago that it was a political marriage. She was just a pawn to keep Andy in the Family."

"How pathetic... Andy dumped her in front of everyone. He must really have had enough of her."

Their whispers pierced my heart.

I stood there the whole night, and Andy never came back.

The next morning, he rushed into my room, only relaxing when he saw I was there.

"Sorry, Leona. There was trouble at the casino on the West Side last night, and then my car broke down. That's why I couldn't go join you."

I didn't hear a word he said. My eyes were fixed on the silk scarf around his neck...and the faint reddish marks it barely covered.

...Were those what I thought they were?

I reached out, wanting to touch the scarf. Andy immediately jerked back, pulling it tighter.

"Does the scarf look strange? It's part of a blessing ritual for our marriage... It was supposed to bring happiness. I have to wear it before the wedding, so I can't take it off."

He lied so smoothly, as if it didn't need any effort to make things up at all.

I lowered my eyes and clenched my fists, barely holding back my tears. "It does look a little odd. It's crooked… Let me fix it for you."

"Don't touch it, or the blessing won't work!" His voice suddenly rose, eyes darting away from mine. "Anyway, don't you still need a pearl necklace to go with your dress? I've already booked the bay that produced the best pearls. Let's go pick out some pearls ourselves."

After changing the subject, he quickly turned and went outside to wait for me.

I tilted my head back and squeezed my eyes shut, but the tears still fell.

When I had changed and gone out, Andy had made sure the scarf covered his neck in its entirety.

As soon as we arrived at the bay, I heard shouting from the beach in the distance.

I looked up, and there was Sonia again.

  • Wrong Car, Right Groom   Chapter 9

After our honeymoon, life finally settled into a peaceful rhythm, yet it was filled with sweetness that I had never felt before.Jason took care of me in every possible way, and it was obvious to everyone in the estate that he was spoiling me beyond belief. I used to think the light in my life had gone out for good, but Jason came along and lit up the entire night sky just for me.That afternoon, I was reading in a garden chair when the butler hurried over. "Madam, Mr. Andy is at the gate. He says he's resigned as Consigliere and would like to see you one last time before he leaves."Hearing that name, I paused for a moment, but my heart felt nothing at all. I looked up and met Jason's eyes as he stepped outside. He didn't say a word and just watched quietly, leaving the choice entirely up to me.I shook my head gently at the butler, my voice calm. "Tell him that it's not necessary. I wish him all the best."There was nothing left to say between us.The butler nodded; he was go

The first ray of morning sunlight slipped through the white curtains, touching my face. I slowly opened my eyes. Jason's scent still lingered in the air, but the spot beside me was empty, the sheets faintly warm.Just as I sat up, the bedroom door opened quietly.Jason walked in carrying breakfast. When he saw I was awake, his eyes softened into a gentle smile."Good morning, my dear wife." He set the tray on the bedside table and leaned down to kiss my forehead."I thought you had already left for work," I said softly."No matter how busy I am, I want to have breakfast with you first." Jason smiled. "But after breakfast, you need to pack your bags."I looked at him curiously. "Pack? Where are we going?"His eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief, while his voice was filled with mystery and affection. "The private jet is ready. I'm taking you to our island for our honeymoon.""Our...island?" I stared at him, eyes wide.He playfully tapped my nose. "That's right. I bought an i

After Vic left, I couldn't shake the memory of Andy's deadly glare as he was dragged away.Jason pulled me into his arms, his warmth melting away the last vestiges of my fear. He whispered in my ear in a calming tone, "Don't be afraid. It's over now."As I leaned into his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart, I finally felt my emotions settle. "Thank you," I whispered. Thank you for making sure I wasn't just a joke.Jason let go and held my face in his hands, his gaze intense. "Leona, you're marrying me not to get back at Andy or for the Family's reputation, right?"His eyes were so intense, I felt like he could see through every wall I had ever put up. My heart trembled. I tried to look away, but he wouldn't let me. His fingers gently traced my cheek, making me meet his eyes."Look at me and tell me." His voice was gentle but commanding, with a hint of caution.I hesitated for a moment, then finally met his eyes and answered, "Yes. I just wanted to choose for mys

Vic's expression was dark. The "switched-wedding-cars" fiasco had become a scandal known throughout the entire Family. And now, his son and the family heir had proposed to me in front of everyone. At this point, if he wanted to protect the Family's reputation, he had no other choice but to accept it.In the end, Andy was dragged away by Vic's men. The color of his face turned as pale as ash. Finally, the room calmed down, leaving just Jason and me.He came over, gently pulled me into his arms, and pressed a kiss to my forehead. "Did that scare you?"I shook my head, leaning into his warmth. I couldn't help but ask, "When you saw me stepping out of the wedding car yesterday, you didn't seem surprised at all. Did you already know?"Jason chuckled, pinching my cheek. "Of course.""So when did you find out Andy was planning to switch the wedding cars?" I pressed further."That's not important. All you need to know is that nothing can happen here without my knowledge," he said.So

The next morning, Andy rushed to the estate. He claimed there had been a mix-up with the wedding cars and insisted he was there to take me back. However, Jason and I hadn't even gotten out of bed yet.The butler told him the truth, but Andy refused to believe it. He erupted in anger. "They're already sleeping together? Ridiculous!"Like a wild animal, Andy stormed into the estate and kicked open the door to our wedding suite. At the moment, Jason and I were lying in each other's arms on the lavish bed.The loud crash woke us up. Jason sat up, the silk sheets falling away and revealing several fresh, red scratch marks on his strong back. Those marks burned themselves into Andy's mind. He snapped, his eyes red."Leona!" he roared my name, his voice filled with pain.I sat up and pulled the sheets around me before looking gently at the man beside me. My tone was full of concern as I said to Jason, "Honey, put on some clothes. Don't catch a cold."That word "honey" fell on Andy l

I wasn't the only one who saw that provocation Sonia had shot my way.The Capo's daughter saw it too. She gritted her teeth and hissed, "I knew she did that on purpose!"She glanced at me with disdain. "Leona, she stole your fiancé! Aren't you going to..."But she stopped—she realized that when a man's heart was clouded, nothing you say would make a difference. When I got home, I had barely sat down when Andy burst in. He grabbed my wrist, trying to drag me out. "You scared Sonia. You're going to apologize to her right now!"Hearing that, I pulled my hand free and met his cold gaze. "I already told you, I didn't push her. Why should I apologize?""I only believe what I see. Don't make me angry, Leona." With that, he pulled something from his pocket. My father's signet ring, representing his status in the Family. It was my father's keepsake, engraved with his name and the date he died. When we got engaged, I gave Andy that ring. It represented my trust, my heart, and everything
