Wrong Car, Right Groom
Penulis: Mountain River

Chapter 1

Penulis: Mountain River
Whispers in the underworld mentioned that Jason Marino, heir to the Family with its hands in the cross-continental arms trade, supposedly loved women with slim waists.

Since his recent return to the country, his eyes had landed on Sonia Stewart—sworn sister to my fiancé, Andy Black.

When Andy found out, he disappeared for three whole days. I finally tracked him down in the Family's club, only to overhear a conversation that shattered my world.

"I'm not just going to stand by and watch Sonia marry that playboy Jason," Andy was telling his lieutenant. "On the wedding day, you need to swap Sonia's wedding car with Leona's. No one must find out!"

His lieutenant thumped his chest, swearing, "No problem, boss! I'll get it done. But... What about your fiancee, Leona?"

Andy let out a confident laugh, as if he were in control of everything.

"I'm the Don's hand-picked Consigliere. Jason knows Leona belongs to me, so he won't lay a finger on her. Once I've slept with Sonia, he'll have to give up on her. After that, we'll just send someone to pick Leona up. She won't suspect a thing. Instead, she'll be scared and trembling… Pathetic but adorable nonetheless. She'll come running right back to my arms!"

Every word was like a bullet leaving holes in my heart, every tone tearing it apart.

I stumbled away as fast as I could, praying they wouldn't hear the sound of my heart breaking.

When Andy tried to pick me up according to his plan later on, he broke down.

...

As soon as Andy finished speaking, the room echoed with the sound of a loud kiss landing on someone's cheek.

Sonia's smug voice followed right after. "Andy, I really don't know how to thank you! I never thought having a slim waist would get me into trouble... Good thing you're there for me!"

Andy grinned. "You're my sworn sister. I once made a blood oath to protect you. No need to thank me."

He paused for a moment, and his tone turned teasing.

"But if you really want to repay me, you can always give me a kid."

The moment he said that, his most trusted men burst out laughing, all of them in on the joke.

Sonia's voice sounded half-excited, half-embarrassed as she protested sweetly, "Oh, come on! How can you say that with so many people around? I might take it seriously! But... What if Leona finds out? She's never liked me. What if she comes after me just because the wedding cars got switched?"

Andy chuckled, his tone infinitely smug. He knew me all too well.

"Relax. Leona won't bother you. She's very obedient...especially in bed. She'll do anything to keep me happy. As long as I warn her at the right moment not to mess with you, she'll listen."

His men roared with laughter.

"God, boss! You really know how to keep Miss Leona under your thumb!"

"No wonder she does whatever you say! Looks like you've got her completely under your charm."

"You're really having a great time, boss. Your fiancée is Don Marino's adopted daughter, so your position is solid. Your sworn sister has your protection and devotes herself to you... You're the kind of man everyone should aspire to be!"

Andy just smiled coolly and said nothing.

He took a crystal wind chime from his jacket pocket and handed it to Sonia. "On your wedding day, hang this on your car's rearview mirror. When the driver sees it, he'll know you're my bride. He'll make sure you get to me safe and sound."

Sonia took the wind chime. She was so ecstatic, she couldn't say a word.

When I saw that wind chime, I lowered my gaze and gave a bitter, silent smile.

Andy's mother had given me that wind chime when Andy and I got engaged, saying it was a gift for her future daughter-in-law. I had always kept it carefully in my jewelry box; I only took it out to admire it every day.

Three days ago, Andy asked me for the wind chime. He said that it was for the wedding preparations, so I gave it to him. I never thought he would give it to someone else.

I turned and walked away. Outside, it was pouring.

My thoughts drifted back to five years ago...

It was raining at my father's funeral, too. I cried so hard that I nearly passed out.

My father had been the Family's top hitman. That day, he was sent to take out a powerful enemy. He pulled off the job, but took several bullets during the crossfire and died in a pool of blood.

The Don, Vic Marino, honored his loyalty by taking me in as his adopted daughter, giving me privileges no one else had.

Everyone respected me, but they all kept their distance.

Then, Vic asked if I would be willing to marry Andy, the genius Consigliere, as he wanted to keep Andy tied to the Family.

It was an open secret, a marriage to buy Andy's loyalty.

I thought it would just be a cold exchange of profit and interests between us, but everything changed because of a sudden attack about half a year ago.

My father's enemies came for me, and Andy didn't hesitate to take a bullet for me. He was shot in the shoulder, but he never flinched. He just held me tight against his chest.

"You're mine. Nothing's taking you from me," he breathed.

He only let go when backup from the Family arrived, collapsing in front of me.

That was the second time I cried for a man. The first was when I lost my father.

The second...was when I lost my heart.

Our political marriage started to change, turning into something dangerously real. Andy would hold my hand through my nightmares. When I said I missed my father, he would drive me out in the middle of the night to visit my father's grave.

I used to think he was the light in my life.

But now...

That light shone on someone else.

Fine, then. If that was what he wanted, then I would grant his wish.

After our honeymoon, life finally settled into a peaceful rhythm, yet it was filled with sweetness that I had never felt before.Jason took care of me in every possible way, and it was obvious to everyone in the estate that he was spoiling me beyond belief. I used to think the light in my life had gone out for good, but Jason came along and lit up the entire night sky just for me.That afternoon, I was reading in a garden chair when the butler hurried over. "Madam, Mr. Andy is at the gate. He says he's resigned as Consigliere and would like to see you one last time before he leaves."Hearing that name, I paused for a moment, but my heart felt nothing at all. I looked up and met Jason's eyes as he stepped outside. He didn't say a word and just watched quietly, leaving the choice entirely up to me.I shook my head gently at the butler, my voice calm. "Tell him that it's not necessary. I wish him all the best."There was nothing left to say between us.The butler nodded; he was go

The first ray of morning sunlight slipped through the white curtains, touching my face. I slowly opened my eyes. Jason's scent still lingered in the air, but the spot beside me was empty, the sheets faintly warm.Just as I sat up, the bedroom door opened quietly.Jason walked in carrying breakfast. When he saw I was awake, his eyes softened into a gentle smile."Good morning, my dear wife." He set the tray on the bedside table and leaned down to kiss my forehead."I thought you had already left for work," I said softly."No matter how busy I am, I want to have breakfast with you first." Jason smiled. "But after breakfast, you need to pack your bags."I looked at him curiously. "Pack? Where are we going?"His eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief, while his voice was filled with mystery and affection. "The private jet is ready. I'm taking you to our island for our honeymoon.""Our...island?" I stared at him, eyes wide.He playfully tapped my nose. "That's right. I bought an i

After Vic left, I couldn't shake the memory of Andy's deadly glare as he was dragged away.Jason pulled me into his arms, his warmth melting away the last vestiges of my fear. He whispered in my ear in a calming tone, "Don't be afraid. It's over now."As I leaned into his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart, I finally felt my emotions settle. "Thank you," I whispered. Thank you for making sure I wasn't just a joke.Jason let go and held my face in his hands, his gaze intense. "Leona, you're marrying me not to get back at Andy or for the Family's reputation, right?"His eyes were so intense, I felt like he could see through every wall I had ever put up. My heart trembled. I tried to look away, but he wouldn't let me. His fingers gently traced my cheek, making me meet his eyes."Look at me and tell me." His voice was gentle but commanding, with a hint of caution.I hesitated for a moment, then finally met his eyes and answered, "Yes. I just wanted to choose for mys

Vic's expression was dark. The "switched-wedding-cars" fiasco had become a scandal known throughout the entire Family. And now, his son and the family heir had proposed to me in front of everyone. At this point, if he wanted to protect the Family's reputation, he had no other choice but to accept it.In the end, Andy was dragged away by Vic's men. The color of his face turned as pale as ash. Finally, the room calmed down, leaving just Jason and me.He came over, gently pulled me into his arms, and pressed a kiss to my forehead. "Did that scare you?"I shook my head, leaning into his warmth. I couldn't help but ask, "When you saw me stepping out of the wedding car yesterday, you didn't seem surprised at all. Did you already know?"Jason chuckled, pinching my cheek. "Of course.""So when did you find out Andy was planning to switch the wedding cars?" I pressed further."That's not important. All you need to know is that nothing can happen here without my knowledge," he said.So

The next morning, Andy rushed to the estate. He claimed there had been a mix-up with the wedding cars and insisted he was there to take me back. However, Jason and I hadn't even gotten out of bed yet.The butler told him the truth, but Andy refused to believe it. He erupted in anger. "They're already sleeping together? Ridiculous!"Like a wild animal, Andy stormed into the estate and kicked open the door to our wedding suite. At the moment, Jason and I were lying in each other's arms on the lavish bed.The loud crash woke us up. Jason sat up, the silk sheets falling away and revealing several fresh, red scratch marks on his strong back. Those marks burned themselves into Andy's mind. He snapped, his eyes red."Leona!" he roared my name, his voice filled with pain.I sat up and pulled the sheets around me before looking gently at the man beside me. My tone was full of concern as I said to Jason, "Honey, put on some clothes. Don't catch a cold."That word "honey" fell on Andy l

I wasn't the only one who saw that provocation Sonia had shot my way.The Capo's daughter saw it too. She gritted her teeth and hissed, "I knew she did that on purpose!"She glanced at me with disdain. "Leona, she stole your fiancé! Aren't you going to..."But she stopped—she realized that when a man's heart was clouded, nothing you say would make a difference. When I got home, I had barely sat down when Andy burst in. He grabbed my wrist, trying to drag me out. "You scared Sonia. You're going to apologize to her right now!"Hearing that, I pulled my hand free and met his cold gaze. "I already told you, I didn't push her. Why should I apologize?""I only believe what I see. Don't make me angry, Leona." With that, he pulled something from his pocket. My father's signet ring, representing his status in the Family. It was my father's keepsake, engraved with his name and the date he died. When we got engaged, I gave Andy that ring. It represented my trust, my heart, and everything
