FLASHBACK!

The smell of warm vanilla filled the kitchen, soft steam curling from the pot on the stove. Mira stood there in silence, her hands steady only because she forced them to be. Her cheek throbbed with every heartbeat — dark purple now, faded red around the edges.

Two pairs of footsteps entered the kitchen just then.

“There you two are,”she said, her voice gentle but brightening with relief. “Come here… let me see you properly.”

“Ma belle, did you miss me?” Jayden’s voice came first, warm and smooth.

“Of course, I missed my boys.” then her eyes narrowed at him, just then Jairo walked in, “You’re looking lean again, both of you. Have you been skipping meals at school?”

“We eat, Mum. Promise.” Jairo said with a gentle smile, leaning to her touch as she cupped his cheeks.

Jayden scoffed and draped an arm over her shoulders. “Don’t listen to him. He forgets lunch because he lives in the library. But me?” he tapped his chest. “I’m your well-fed, handsome son.”

Mira laughed, “

Jayden needed to be moved from that hospital, and Jairo wasted no time telling their father. “On one condition,” Salvatore replied, stepping closer to him. Jairo’s brows narrowed as he tried to figure out the man’s intentions. He didn’t react, didn’t nod, didn’t even blink. That made Salvatore smirk. This one wasn’t as easy to read as the other. “Jayden will be moved,” he continued, pausing just to build tension, “but the day he gets discharged… you both will have your final training. I will choose my successor after that.” Final training? Jairo hated how those words sounded. He knew his father always played dirty games. He also knew asking for details would only bring insults. So he looked at his mother, she had hope in her eyes, and then looked back at his father. His mind did a little calculations before averting his gaze, after he brief pause, he turned and walked out. Jayden’s recovery was painfully slow. Each day dragged by with only tiny signs of improvement. Meanwhile, Mira’s condition worsened. She had delayed proper treatment for far too long, relying only on basic painkillers and medications she could get her hands on. The cancer spread too fast, too aggressively. Now she was at the final stage, and the doctors didn’t know if she would survive much longer. Jairo felt like the world was collapsing around him. He had no one to share the burden with. Every time he looked at Jayden lying there, weak and often drifting into dark talks about death, a cold fear wrapped around his heart. And when he looked at Mira, barely conscious most days, breathing carefully like every inhale hurt… he felt helpless. These were the two people he loved the most. He wished he could trade places with them, take their pain, anything to stop what was happening. Weeks turned into months like a long nightmare. The longer he waited, the deeper his fear dug into him. He

Isabelle froze in the bathroom the moment she heard Jairo’s voice outside. “You fvcked her, right?” The words hit her like a punch to the stomach. Fvcked? Her? The idea terrified her. Were the brothers… passing her around? Jayden responded in his usual confident tone, “Actually, she came to me. We can’t talk here. She’s in the bathroom.” His arrogance stung. She knew he was a playboy, but hearing him talk about her like that made her want to crawl into a hole. Tears gathered in her eyes as shame washed over her. She waited until she was sure Jairo had walked away. She stayed longer than needed, trying to keep herself together before stepping out, grabbing her shoes and bag quickly. Jayden watched her rush toward the door. He reached out and grabbed her arm. “We need to talk…” “There’s nothing to talk about.” she yanked her hand away, her eyes sharp with embarrassment. “What happened last night shouldn’t have happened. We will treat it as if nothing happened.” she turned to lea

Jairo stared at Annabelle with disbelief, his hands gripping her shoulders as he jerked her closer. His voice shook with panic and anger. “What… what are you talking about? What the hell happened when I was away?” he half-yelled, his voice breaking as Annabelle wept uncontrollably. “I-I don’t know,” she stammered between sobs, “but I know it’s because of you. Why did you disappear?” Jairo’s body trembled. His heart was pounding fast, his mind spinning with confusion and fear. He released her, struggling to find the right words. “Which hospital is my brother in?” he asked. Annabelle froze for a second, staring at him as if she couldn’t believe his priorities. “And my sister?” she shot back. Her voice carried disbelief, anger and deep worry. “Jayden will explain everything that happened after I left him and Isabelle that morning,” he said, attempting to stay calm. He was about to ask again for the hospital address when Annabelle cut him off sharply. “So you were there that day,

Jairo wasn’t ready to face anyone, so he stayed at Emilia’s place for the next four days. The more he learned about the eighteen-year-old fresher from his school, the more she intrigued him. He learned she loved pink, the beach, read romance novels when she couldn't sleep, and that she was a terrible cook. But what surprised him most was her calmness. She looked small and delicate, but she didn’t behave like someone who was easily intimidated. She asked direct questions like how he got shot and why, but never pushed when he didn’t answer. She respected his privacy. She tried her best to make him comfortable. And surprisingly, he didn’t mind being there. That morning, she walked in with takeout bags. “You ever thought of learning how to cook?” Jairo asked as she unpacked the food. “Many times,” she sighed. “But I rarely have the time.” He rolled his eyes. “Not an excuse.” She let out a tiny groan. “Yeah, okay. But I don’t have anyone to teach me. My guardian parents are barely h
