Chapter 5

Author: Bella

Vivian cast him a sidelong glance and huddled into her sofa, leisurely flipping through her magazine. She purposefully pulled a long face and pouted. “Darling husband, I’ve finished all of my pay for the month. I don’t even have money to apply for a beauty card.”

Liam chuckled helplessly. “My dear wife, my payroll card is already in your hands. Do you need to ask me for money?”

“I’d have to inform you, at least,” She curved her lips into a smile, then extended her leg to kick him playfully. “Hey, Liam, when are we going to the hospital for a check-up? I still intend on having a baby right after we get married. They say that the man should get a check-up too. The baby will only be healthy when both parents are in good health!”

The pair had been together for many years, so by the time they got married, it would be time to have a baby.

“Are you still uncertain about...” Liam slid closer toward her. Then, he continued in a vague tone, “Whether my physique is in good condition or not?”

The pair had moved in together two years ago. Naturally, they were already intimate.

Vivian giggled enchantingly, then gently kicked him again. “Away with you! If you won’t go to the hospital, I won’t either!”

Liam had always listened to her. In a couple of days, he followed her to the hospital for a check-up. Both of them were in pretty good shape. The doctor only prescribed Vivian with some prenatal vitamins.

By the time the couple left the hospital, it was already close to noon. They had a simple lunch outside, then Liam had to drive to the office. Vivian, however, walked around a shopping mall for a while, and then leisurely drove back to the university.

The school that she worked at was not a very big one. It had just been promoted to a university, so it had been trying to organize more educational districts. However, they did not have enough buildings, thus the educational institute stuffed a few of their lecturers into one floor altogether. Vivian parked her car beneath the shady trees behind the office block as usual. Just when she got down from the car, a black all-terrain vehicle drove in and parked close to her car.

The car was unfamiliar to her. It did not look like it belonged to a university lecturer. Vivian’s footsteps unconsciously slowed down a little so that she could stare at it a little longer.

The car door opened, and a man wearing dark sunglasses stepped out. He had a tall and slender figure and was dressed in a shirt and a pair of jeans. He might have looked slim, but Vivian was someone who frequented the gym and she knew that this type of fashion style usually belonged to someone who looked thin with his clothes on but was meaty when they came off. This man may have appeared slim, but he might be hiding ample flesh underneath it all.

Nevertheless, she was not interested. She was deeply in love with Liam and was approaching the stage whereby she would turn a blind eye to all other men but him. They would all look like blurred faces in her eyes regardless of whether they were handsome or not.

However, the man leaned against the car door and looked at her. “Miss, may I ask if the Faculty of Foreign Languages office is in this building?”

He had a distinct voice. It was deep, low, and sweet-sounding. However, it had a somewhat icy-cold edge. It should have sounded soothing on this hot summer day, but in Vivian’s ears, it sent shivers down her spine. That distant memory of a nightmare that she had forcibly buried down into the depths of her mind and was close to obliteration suddenly reappeared.

Underneath the moonlight, the man’s sharp, knife-like glare swept past her face. His expression was apathetic as he said, “Be clean about it. Don’t leave any room for future issues.”

She would never forget that voice for the rest of her life.

As if she had come face to face with the devil, the word “help” seemed stuck in Vivian’s throat. She could only stare at the man in front of her, petrified with terror. She backed away, helpless and panicking. In her terror, her high heel dove into a crack in the ground and she lost her balance, then stumbled onto the ground.

Did you know, Vee?I’ve thought of this more than once. If only our beginning from that night wasn’t so unbearable, how wonderful would it be?… The light from the setting sun spilled towards her from the side, casting a glow on the piece of paper, illuminating the words on it, and giving them a slight shimmer. Just like last year, when she emerged from the ultrasound room in the maternity hospital, weak after a mere two steps, she had to lean against the corridor. She covered her mouth with

Vivian arrived home a little late. She parked the car at the side of the road first, then collected her subscribed newspapers and magazines from the mailbox at her gate. She flipped through the mail as she walked in. To her surprise, she found a letter. It was an envelope made from kraft paper with her name on it.It was a rare handwritten letter with the faint print of a bamboo tree, drawn with Chinese calligraphy ink. The bamboo was tall, straight, and fierce just like the script on the lette

“It’s been three months now, why isn’t the little one moving? When will the baby quicken?” he asked her, “Can it hear me? Will it remember my voice?”He even asked, “Who do you think it’ll look like, Vee? Will it be a girl or a boy?”She knew very well that he was harboring evil intentions, but she gave into him and crumbled anyway. She sobbed and screamed, “Kill me, Sean Jackson. Kill me. I will never give birth to this child even if I die! Never!”He soothed her, “Alright. Don’t give birth

His lower jaw tightened. The lines on his face stiffened icily like the cold edges of a knife. In reality, he had given up long ago. His heart was as dead as ash. However, refusing to accept this, he grasped at everything, hoping to find a straw that could save a life, not to save himself but to save his child’s life. That was how well he knew her. He knew that once she escaped, she would never spare his child. Did he hate her? Yes. He hated how he couldn’t shoot her dead. Love triumphed over ha

“Then, what should we do?” his aide asked.A hero’s end was, inevitably, death. He wasn’t afraid of death, but he was simply plagued with remaining grievances. After a bout of silence, Edward calmly said, “Do something for me. Once that’s done, just slip away. There are no lives in your hands and you aren’t in the cops’ database. No one will notice you.”This aide had received a great debt of gratitude from Edward once, so he was solely loyal to him. He became distressed when he heard this, so

“You deserve it for all of the crimes you’ve committed!” Vivian screamed, losing control. Her emotions felt strangely steady after that scream. She threw the gun away as her sparkling, dark eyes were filled with renewed determination. She stared at him and spoke, enunciating every word, “Sean Jackson and those brothers of yours, you’ve all got your justice. Beaten to death, right? Arrested, was it? But when you willfully hurt others and view their lives as nothing more than weeds, you should hav
