Chapter 2

Author: Verdant Mountain
Just then, a stranger suddenly lunged at me with a knife. I screamed and stumbled back in terror.

Harry reacted instantly. Drawing on years of muscle memory, he sprinted forward and positioned himself in front of me. He kicked the knife out of the attacker's hand before subduing him.

Before I could catch my breath, Ember shrieked and collapsed, writhing in pain. Another stranger, wielding a knife, had slashed her leg.

Harry hesitated for a split second before abandoning me. He rushed to her side and shielded her protectively.

My heart grew colder with each passing moment as I watched the scene unfold before me.

Seeing that no one was guarding me, the other attacker picked up his knife and charged forward. Just as the blade was about to pierce my chest, someone appeared out of nowhere and kicked the man to the ground.

I opened my eyes and saw it was Jeffrey.

The two assassins, realizing their plan had failed, fled in panic.

Jeffrey's face went dark with fury as he turned to Harry and roared, "Have you forgotten your mission? If anything had happened to Ms. Webb, could you even handle the consequences?"

Harry flinched, panic flashing in his eyes. Still, he quickly brushed it off. "Nothing happened, right? Besides, Ember only got hurt because of Victoria. I couldn't just ignore her."

Jeffrey's expression grew even colder. He stormed forward and punched Harry square in the face. "So you're just going to ignore Ms. Webb's safety? Have you forgotten why Mr. Webb took us in all those years ago?

"He treated us like his own children. And now, you're willing to betray that debt of gratitude just because of one woman?"

Though Harry felt a twinge of guilt, he couldn't take Jeffrey's fists and harsh accusations any longer. The two of them broke into a fight.

I hurried to break them apart, but before I could, Ember let out another pitiful wail. "Harry, it hurts so much!"

Harry stopped fighting at once. He scooped her up into his arms and rushed off without a backward glance.

Jeffrey's face went cold as he turned to look at me, his eyes flashing with anger.

"Why did you stop me? After everything Harry's done, how can you still protect him?" His eyes reddened as he asked me.

"I didn't—"

"Enough," Jeffrey cut me off sharply. "There's no need to explain. Since you've already chosen him, live with the consequences."

Panic surged through me. "I didn't choose him!"

At my words, a flicker of surprise crossed his eyes, but it quickly faded into a shadow of disappointment. "You've loved Harry since you were a child. Everyone knows it. If not him, who else would you choose?"

Jeffrey gave a bitter laugh. "Forget it. Choose whoever you want."

After saying that, he walked away, heavy with disappointment.

An ache spread through my chest as I watched him leave.

What would he think if Jeffrey knew he was the one I had chosen? The thought left me unexpectedly hopeful.

...

The next day, Dad sent over dozens of gowns for me to pick from for the engagement banquet.

I had just settled on one when Harry appeared, supporting the limping Ember as they walked in. Her eyes lit up the moment she saw the dress. She gasped, "It's beautiful!"

But just as quickly, Ember's expression dimmed. "Too bad… Someone like me, who's born into poverty, could never wear something so lovely."

Harry's heart ached instantly. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and said tenderly, "Don't say that, Ember. I'll buy whatever you want for you."

Three years later, Jeffrey and I were married. At our wedding, friends and family showered us with heartfelt blessings.I also received a letter from far away. It was from Harry, sincerely wishing us a lifetime of happiness. Over the years, he had reflected on his mistakes, and though he didn't expect forgiveness, he still wanted to apologize.Reading those words, I knew it was all finally over. The past, like a fleeting bloom, had dissolved into memory. My life now belonged to the future—one filled with love and happiness. After taking over the Webb family business, Jeffrey managed everything with order and precision. Even with his busy schedule, he always carved out time for me.One afternoon, while I was home alone, I wandered into his study to look for a book. That was when I noticed a wooden box.Curiosity got the better of me, and I lifted the lid. Inside was a stack of letters. Each one was a love letter from Jeffrey to me.By the time I reached the last, my tears had blur

But the men were already consumed by lust and had no intention of listening. One of them shoved Ember hard, sending her sprawling several feet across the floor. She winced, tears welling up from the pain.Realizing she had no power to stop them, she gave in with a twisted smile. "Fine. This works too. Who cares if someone does rescue you? Once Jeffrey sees you've been tainted, I doubt he'd still want you."The men leered and closed in on me. I screamed for help, but my voice only echoed uselessly in the empty warehouse."Let her go!"Just as my clothes were about to be torn away, the warehouse doors burst open. It was Harry. With a few swift punches and kicks, he knocked the men to the ground. Then, he draped his jacket over me, scooped me into his arms, and turned to leave. But Ember's eyes went red with madness. She pulled a knife from her clothes and rushed at us like someone possessed."Watch out!" Harry shouted. The blade came too fast. Harry shielded me with his body, a

Harry waited outside my house for hours that day until he collapsed from exhaustion and had to be taken to the hospital. When I heard the news, I felt nothing at all. After all, the situation Harry was in now was entirely of his own making.Since then, Harry stopped appearing in my life.My relationship with Jeffrey grew stronger by the day.Back then, my whole world revolved around Harry. I never saw anyone else. But spending time with Jeffrey taught me that love couldn't survive on one person's sacrifice alone. It took two people giving equally, investing in each other, to make a relationship thrive. And no matter what, one should never allow a third person to come between the two people in a relationship.I thought life would continue in that peaceful, steady way, but then someone showed up and shattered it all.It happened on Jeffrey's birthday. I had gone out by myself to prepare a surprise for him.At the mall entrance, I ran into Ember. She was so thin her cheeks were su

No matter how I tried to explain, he never believed me.In my past life, I still chose him despite knowing how he felt about Ember. Jeffrey froze, staring at me in disbelief. Only when I met his gaze with certainty did he finally step onto the stage.Harry, however, stood rooted in place. He muttered under his breath, "No… This can't be real."Everyone ignored Harry and shifted their attention to Jeffrey. But then Harry suddenly roared and rushed onto the stage. He grabbed my arm tightly. "Victoria, you're doing this on purpose, aren't you? You're just trying to provoke me because you're jealous of Ember!"Suddenly, I didn't understand what was going on. Harry was the one who chose Ember in the first place, and now that I had stepped aside, he suddenly couldn't accept it.Jeffrey, who was beside me, shoved him away without hesitation. "Harry, Victoria's my fiancee now. Stay away from her."Harry gave him nothing more than a disdainful glance before glaring back at me. "Victoria, I know this is just to spite me. Harry stopped in front of me, his eyes dark and menacing as he said, "Victoria, even if I'm forced to marry you, I'll never love you. And if you dare flaunt in front of Ember that you've 'won' me, I'll make sure the wedding never happens!"With that, he stormed off with Ember at his side without even glancing back.I watched their retreating figures, a cold laugh rising in my chest. For the first time, I couldn't fathom why I had ever fallen for someone like Harry in my past life....The engagement banquet was about to begin. I had just finished my makeup when Ember came looking for me. Her face twisted with resentment as she spat out, asking, "Victoria, why? Why should you get everything? It's not fair!"Why were you born into privilege, while I had to grow up as the poor woman everyone looked down on? Even Harry, the man I love, has to give in to your father's power and get engaged to you instead!"Hearing that, I let out a cold laugh and shot her a look full of disdain. "Em
