I wanted to scream. To yell at someone. To yank out my hair and just sit on the floor to cry. Alejandro watched me from across my room while I curled up like a ball on the bed after the bomb he’d dropped on me. He’d just told me Jaylen had leukemia and was in the hospital. I hated myself for putting myself in a situation where I couldn’t march to the hospital and demand to be by his side. It was killing me that I couldn’t hold his tiny hand and caress his face.

“Did Levi have leukemia at one point?” he asked me. I didn’t need to lift my head from my knees to know he was standing beside me.

“I don’t know, but I suffered from it as a child.”

“That explains it.” he said, not even a trace of sympathy in his voice. “He got it from you.”

I peered at him from under my lashes. “What?”

“He got it from you.” he repeated. “It can sometimes be genetic.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“Well, now you do.” He said, eyes fixed on the vanity before him.

I watched him sit down beside me on t
