Early Morning – Tricia’s House

Sunlight crept through the lace curtains of Helena’s room, painting golden streaks across her walls. The alarm buzzed softly at 6:00 a.m.

Helena sat up slowly.

No hesitation. No dread.

Tricia turned, surprised. “You’re up early.”

Helena smiled softly. “I’m going back, Mum.”

Scene – Human Rights Tribunal Office, Monday MorningHelena stood outside the silver-glass building, her ID card clipped to her blazer, nerves dancing in her stomach. She adjusted the folder in her hands, inhaled deeply, and stepped through the doors.Inside, the air smelled like clean paper and quiet justice. Lawyers walked briskly down halls, their voices firm, their eyes tired but focused. It was everything she imagined—and more.Dr. Ikenna greeted her with a nod. “You’re early.”“I was too excited to sleep.”He smiled faintly. “That’s good. You’ll need that energy.”They walked past cubicles into a small observation room. A court case was about to begin—a young girl seeking justice after years of unlawful detention. Helena’s hands tightened around her notepad.“Sit,” Dr. Ikenna said. “And watch. But most importantly—feel.”Helena sat.And watched. And felt.Every word spoken in that room tugged at her—raw, aching, necessary. The girl’s voice was barely a whisper, but it trembled w

Scene – University Campus, Monday MorningThe sound of car horns, footsteps, and student chatter greeted Helena as she stepped out of the cab and onto the familiar pavement of her law school campus. Her duffel bag hung off one shoulder, her hair still smelling faintly of charcoal smoke and Leo’s drum.Greg had dropped her off first before heading back to his academy. She missed him already—but not in a sad way. In a full way.A knowing kind of missing. She took a deep breath and adjusted her backpack, the bracelet Greg had given her swinging at her wrist. It was navy and silver—his favorite colors.Inside the lecture hall, students were already murmuring, flipping through their notes and arguing over assignments. Helena slid into a seat near the window, greeted a few classmates, and opened her journal. Her lecturer’s voice drifted into the room seconds later, calm and clear. “Welcome back, everyone. I hope the break gave you more than sleep—it gave you clarity.”Helena smiled to herse

Scene – Backyard, Last Night in IbadanThe night air was cool, wrapped in a breeze that smelled of burnt wood and distant rain. The bonfire crackled in the center of the yard, flames licking the air, throwing golden light across four familiar faces.Helena sat with her knees tucked under her chin, her cheek pressed to Greg’s shoulder. She wore one of his oversized shirts and had a soft smile on her lips.Tessy and Leo shared a mat across from them, a shared blanket draped over their shoulders. The silence between them wasn’t awkward anymore—it was comfortable, loaded with things that didn’t need to be said.Leo leaned forward, tossing a small stick into the fire. “So, this is it, huh?”Greg nodded. “Our last night here.”Tessy sighed. “Time really flew.”Helena spoke, her voice thoughtful. “Feels like we borrowed time from the world. Like we paused everything for a little while.”Greg looked down at her. “Maybe we needed to.”Tessy raised a brow. “You two got so soft on this trip.”He

Scene – Roadside, En Route to IbadanThe van screeched to a dusty stop beside a suya stand, smoke rising from the grill as the vendor sliced sizzling beef.“I told you to eat before we left!” Helena said, turning around from the passenger seat.“I did,” Leo replied, leaping out the side door. “But that was pre-road hunger. Totally different hunger.”Greg leaned back in the driver’s seat, sunglasses on, one arm resting on the open window. “Should we just set up camp here? Leo’s already flirting with the meat.”Tessy was in the backseat, giggling with her legs up, scrolling through a playlist. “He’s not flirting. That’s his face whenever he smells pepper.”“You’re just jealous,” Leo called from outside, waving his skewer like a trophy.Helena laughed. “Jealous of what? And to remind you that your biggest fan is always grounded—but watching.”Greg’s
