Chapter 10: Blood on the Asphalt

The phone dropped back into my coat pocket, but the static-heavy echo of the quarantine breach still rang in my ears. Sixty miles east. A hospital overrun.

The ninety-day buffer was officially dead.

"Derrick!" I shouted, sprinting out of the warehouse loading bay toward his shop.

Derrick stepped out of his side office, a heavy metal wrench in hand, his face tightening the moment he saw me. "What is it now, Evelyn? If this is another one of your—"

"Pack up the shop," I interrupted, my voice sharp, breathless, and laced with absolute urgency. "Grab whatever tools you need, lock the rolling steel shutters, and get Maya into the back office right now."

Derrick stared at me as if I had lost my mind. He let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "Are you out of your damn mind? Pack up? This is my livelihood, Evelyn! I have three engine rebuilds scheduled for this week—"

"Your engines won't matter when the National Guard seals the perimeter!" I snapped, closing the distance between us and grabbing the front of his work shirt. My fingers dug into the heavy fabric, my eyes blazing with the sheer terror of what I knew was coming. "A regional quarantine hospital sixty miles east was just overrun two hours ago. The state government is enforcing a media blackout, but the border is already leaking. If you stay out here on the open street tomorrow, you and Maya will die!"

Derrick wrenched his collar out of my grip, shoving me back a step. His face twisted with raw fury and bitter resentment.

"You're sick," Derrick hissed, pointing a trembling finger at my chest. "Every time you show up, it's more hysteria, more crazy end-of-the-world conspiracy theories! First you trap me with a lease, then you drop medical supplies, and now you want me to abandon everything I've built because of a 'hospital rumor'? Leave us alone, Evelyn!"

Before I could answer, a piercing, ungodly sound tore through the morning air.

Screeeech—BOOM!

A deafening metal crash echoed from the main avenue two blocks away, followed instantly by the violent shattering of storefront glass and the high-pitched wails of car alarms.

Derrick froze, his head snapping toward the front of the street.

I didn't waste a second. I spun around, drawing my tactical taser from my pocket, and sprinted toward the corner of South 5th Street.

What we saw on the main thoroughfare froze the blood in my veins.

A delivery van had plowed straight into a concrete lamppost, its front bumper crumpled like tin foil. But it wasn't the crash that made my stomach drop—it was what was happening outside the vehicle.

Three figures in civilian clothes were tearing at the driver through the shattered side window. Except they weren't pulling him out to help him. Their jaws were wide open, teeth sinking deep into the driver's throat in a frenzy of wet, tearing flesh and arterial spray. The driver didn't even scream anymore; his body twitched once and went completely limp.

"What... what the hell is happening?" Derrick whispered, stepping up beside me, his color draining away entirely as his wrench slipped from his hand and clattered hard against the asphalt.

"Patient Zero didn't wait for the calendar," I said, my voice dead and cold. "They're already here."

One of the blood-soaked figures paused, its head twisting at an unnatural, bone-cracking angle toward our alleyway. Its milky-white, bloodshot eyes locked onto us, and a deep, rattling snarl hissed from its throat.

It charged straight toward us down the narrow alley, moving with terrifying, inhuman speed.

"Get back!" I yelled, raising my taser.

Derrick, snapping out of his shock, grabbed a heavy iron pipe leaning against the wall. But before either of us could strike, a second shadow dropped from the brick ledge above—a mutated runner, faster and more aggressive than the rest.

It bypassed me entirely, lunging directly at Derrick’s blind spot with outstretched, claw-like fingers!

"Derrick, look out!" I screamed, lunging forward and shoving him hard out of the way.

The heavy, decaying body of the infected runner slammed into me instead, sending us both crashing hard onto the rough gravel. The impact knocked the wind clean out of my lungs, and sharp rocks tore through my jacket into my skin.

The creature snarled inches from my face, its jaws snapping wildly, reeking of rotten iron and death. I jammed the prongs of my taser straight under its jawline and pulled the trigger.

CRACK-ZZZAP!

A violent blue arc of electricity surged through its skull. The creature spasmed violently, its eyes rolling back as its weight went dead against my chest.

I shoved the heavy corpse off me, gasping for air, blood oozing from a deep scrape along my forearm.

Derrick was on his knees beside me, his hands bloody, his chest heaving as he stared down at the twitching monster I had just killed. The icy wall of hatred and stubborn denial in his eyes had completely shattered, replaced by the horrifying, undeniable truth of the apocalypse.

He looked up at me, his voice trembling as he reached out a shaking, grease-stained hand to help me up.

"Evelyn..." Derrick choked out, the walls finally giving way. "What... what do we do now?"

"We survive," I said, gripping his hand tightly, pulling myself to my feet as distant screams began to echo from every corner of the burning city. "And you do exactly what I tell you to do."

Chapter 20: Safe PassageI watched Elena clutch Lily closer as the little girl stirred in her sleep. The woman looked exhausted, and despite the tension between us, I knew she couldn't keep hiding in the bunker forever."You and Lily need to leave," I said.Elena stared at me. "You told me to stay away from your workshop. Now you're telling me to leave the bunker?""Because this place is about to become a battleground." I kept my voice low. "I can't promise I'll be able to protect you both when things get worse."She hesitated, clearly unsure whether to trust me.I understood her hesitation. I'd threatened to throw her out only hours earlier. But keeping her and Lily here while Derrick and I prepared to break through the blockade would put them in danger. I couldn't afford to let that happen.I opened the emergency exit and glanced toward the alley. The floodlights were still blazing across the compound, washing the surrounding walls in harsh white light. I couldn't tell whether the s

Chapter 19: Sparks and Silent EyesThe smell of hot oil, rusted iron, and burning rubber filled the dark back bay.Derrick had positioned his heavy diesel shop truck right over the central maintenance pit. Blue welding sparks exploded into the darkness as he worked on the front bumper, his thick leather apron covered in black grease.I stood near the open hood, holding a heavy flashlight on his work. We had already bolted a massive steel snowplow blade across the front grille to smash through street barricades. Next came the windows."We need reinforced steel mesh over the windshield," I said, keeping my voice low over the hum of the portable battery pack. "It needs to offer some protection against bullets from Julian's men while still giving you enough vision to steer through a horde. We'll use steel plates with narrow viewing slits for the side windows."Derrick lifted his welding mask, wiping a line of sweat from his forehead with the back of his gloved hand."I've got three sheets

Their beams pointed directly at the top floor of the parking garage. On the thermal monitor, I saw the orange shape of the sniper move suddenly. The bright lights were shining directly into his night-vision scope. He couldn't see properly anymore. He raised his arms to protect his eyes, moved away from his rifle, and hid behind a concrete wall to escape the bright light."Now you know I'm watching you, you bastard," I muttered. The sniper now knew that I had discovered him. He could no longer use his night-vision equipment properly because of the bright lights.I pressed the intercom button to speak to the room downstairs."Derrick, move away from the gate and come to

Chapter 17: Glare in the ScopeElena sat on a blanket in the corner of the staging room, holding her daughter close. Derrick brought them two bottles of water and a couple of protein bars. His face looked much calmer now that he knew the little girl wasn't bitten."They'll be safe here for the night," Derrick said, walking over to me by the stairs. His voice was quiet, the anger from earlier gone. "Maya's fever dropped a bit. Thank you... for letting them in.""They stay in the staging room, Derrick," I said firmly, keeping my voice down. "The main food storage stays locked. We don't know these people, and our supplies won't last if we keep feeding extra mouths."Derrick looked like he wanted to argue, but he was too exhausted. He just nodded once and rubbed his bruised arm. "I'll watch the door down here. You go check the cameras."I walked up the metal stairs to the second-floor control room. The heavy steel door locked behind me with a solid click.I sat down at the console a

Chapter 16: Cold Steel and White KnucklesThe silence inside the tiny security cage was suffocating, broken only by the mother’s frantic, ragged breathing and the low, wet thudding of infected bodies beating against the outer iron mesh behind them.Derrick stepped closer to the child, his chest heavy, his boots clicking softly on the cold concrete. "Evelyn... look at her leg.""Don't touch her!" the mother shrieked, instantly scrambling backward and shielding the little girl with her own body. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with pure, maternal desperation. "She’s not bitten! She fell on the pavement when we were running! I swear to God, she just scraped her ankle!""Step back, ma'am," I said through the inner viewing slot, my voice cold, calm, and utterly unyielding. I grabbed a pair of heavy leather gloves and a short steel inspection rod from the wall rack. "If it's just a scrape, you have nothing to fear. But if teeth touched that skin, neither of you enters my buildin

Chapter 15: The CompromiseFor three excruciating seconds, neither of us moved.Derrick’s hand remained glued to the iron latch, his knuckles white, his chest rising and falling in deep, furious breaths. My taser stayed leveled directly at his chest, the faint blue hum of the prongs the only sound in the dark entryway besides the frantic pounding outside."Shoot me, then," Derrick growled, his jaw locked in a rigid line. "Go on, Evelyn. Prove to me that you're no better than the monsters ripping through the street.""I am keeping your sister alive," I said, my voice dangerously steady. "Look at the monitor, Derrick. Look at the man on the left!"Derrick flicked his eyes to the security screen mounted beside the door frame.Through the grainy infrared camera, the man clutching his shoulder was trembling violently. He wasn't just bleeding—his skin was slick with cold sweat, his veins bulging black against his neck. He was turning. In less than two minutes, his central nervous syst
