Chapter 17: Glare in the Scope

Elena sat on a blanket in the corner of the staging room, holding her daughter close. Derrick brought them two bottles of water and a couple of protein bars. His face looked much calmer now that he knew the little girl wasn't bitten.

"They'll be safe here for the night," Derrick said, walking over to me by the stairs. His voice was quiet, the anger from earlier gone. "Maya's fever dropped a bit. Thank you... for letting them in."

"They stay in the staging room, Derrick," I said firmly, keeping my voice down. "The main food storage stays locked. We don't know these people, and our supplies won't last if we keep feeding extra mouths."

Derrick looked like he wanted to argue, but he was too exhausted. He just nodded once and rubbed his bruised arm. "I'll watch the door down here. You go check the cameras."

I walked up the metal stairs to the second-floor control room. The heavy steel door locked behind me with a solid click.

I sat down at the console and looked at the eight security monitors. The black-and-white screens showed the dark alleys, the front gate, and the main road. The infected runners were wandering off toward distant gunshots down the street. Everything outside was quiet.

Too quiet.

I zoomed in on Camera 4, mounted high on our roof tower, and moved the lens across the dark buildings nearby. Past the dry cleaners, past the dark apartment block, and over to the six-story parking garage three blocks away.

Suddenly, a tiny flash of light caught my eye.

My hand froze on the joystick.

It wasn't a streetlight—the power grid was completely dead. It was a reflection. A glass lens catching a flicker of fire in the dark.

I hit a button to switch the camera to thermal vision.

The screen shifted into cool blues and purples. High on the top deck of that parking garage, a bright orange heat shape sat motionless behind a long rifle setup.

My stomach dropped.

"A sniper," I whispered.

It wasn't just infected out there. A trained shooter with night-vision gear was staring directly at my building.

I pulled out my phone and looked at the encrypted picture sent to me earlier—the photo of my northern valley bunker.

It all clicked into place.

Julian Sterling hadn't given up. He was using his family's money to hire private mercenaries. He knew he couldn't easily break through my steel doors, so he put a shooter on the roof to pin me inside until I ran out of food and water.

He wanted to starve me out.

I leaned back in my chair, my jaw clenching tight as I stared at the orange heat mark on the monitor.

"You think you can trap me, Julian?" I muttered. "Let's see about that."

I grabbed my control tablet and pulled up the switches for our heavy roof floodlights.

If Julian’s hired gun thought he could hide in the dark, he was dead wrong.

Chapter 20: Safe PassageI watched Elena clutch Lily closer as the little girl stirred in her sleep. The woman looked exhausted, and despite the tension between us, I knew she couldn't keep hiding in the bunker forever."You and Lily need to leave," I said.Elena stared at me. "You told me to stay away from your workshop. Now you're telling me to leave the bunker?""Because this place is about to become a battleground." I kept my voice low. "I can't promise I'll be able to protect you both when things get worse."She hesitated, clearly unsure whether to trust me.I understood her hesitation. I'd threatened to throw her out only hours earlier. But keeping her and Lily here while Derrick and I prepared to break through the blockade would put them in danger. I couldn't afford to let that happen.I opened the emergency exit and glanced toward the alley. The floodlights were still blazing across the compound, washing the surrounding walls in harsh white light. I couldn't tell whether the s

Chapter 19: Sparks and Silent EyesThe smell of hot oil, rusted iron, and burning rubber filled the dark back bay.Derrick had positioned his heavy diesel shop truck right over the central maintenance pit. Blue welding sparks exploded into the darkness as he worked on the front bumper, his thick leather apron covered in black grease.I stood near the open hood, holding a heavy flashlight on his work. We had already bolted a massive steel snowplow blade across the front grille to smash through street barricades. Next came the windows."We need reinforced steel mesh over the windshield," I said, keeping my voice low over the hum of the portable battery pack. "It needs to offer some protection against bullets from Julian's men while still giving you enough vision to steer through a horde. We'll use steel plates with narrow viewing slits for the side windows."Derrick lifted his welding mask, wiping a line of sweat from his forehead with the back of his gloved hand."I've got three sheets

Chapter 18: High Beams and Dark SecretsMy fingers hovered over the tablet in front of me. I selected the switches for the powerful lights on our roof and pointed them toward the parking garage three blocks away. Then I pressed the button.CLICK!Two powerful lights suddenly came on, shining brightly into the dark night. Their beams pointed directly at the top floor of the parking garage. On the thermal monitor, I saw the orange shape of the sniper move suddenly. The bright lights were shining directly into his night-vision scope. He couldn't see properly anymore. He raised his arms to protect his eyes, moved away from his rifle, and hid behind a concrete wall to escape the bright light."Now you know I'm watching you, you bastard," I muttered. The sniper now knew that I had discovered him. He could no longer use his night-vision equipment properly because of the bright lights.I pressed the intercom button to speak to the room downstairs."Derrick, move away from the gate and come to

Chapter 16: Cold Steel and White KnucklesThe silence inside the tiny security cage was suffocating, broken only by the mother’s frantic, ragged breathing and the low, wet thudding of infected bodies beating against the outer iron mesh behind them.Derrick stepped closer to the child, his chest heavy, his boots clicking softly on the cold concrete. "Evelyn... look at her leg.""Don't touch her!" the mother shrieked, instantly scrambling backward and shielding the little girl with her own body. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with pure, maternal desperation. "She’s not bitten! She fell on the pavement when we were running! I swear to God, she just scraped her ankle!""Step back, ma'am," I said through the inner viewing slot, my voice cold, calm, and utterly unyielding. I grabbed a pair of heavy leather gloves and a short steel inspection rod from the wall rack. "If it's just a scrape, you have nothing to fear. But if teeth touched that skin, neither of you enters my buildin

Chapter 15: The CompromiseFor three excruciating seconds, neither of us moved.Derrick’s hand remained glued to the iron latch, his knuckles white, his chest rising and falling in deep, furious breaths. My taser stayed leveled directly at his chest, the faint blue hum of the prongs the only sound in the dark entryway besides the frantic pounding outside."Shoot me, then," Derrick growled, his jaw locked in a rigid line. "Go on, Evelyn. Prove to me that you're no better than the monsters ripping through the street.""I am keeping your sister alive," I said, my voice dangerously steady. "Look at the monitor, Derrick. Look at the man on the left!"Derrick flicked his eyes to the security screen mounted beside the door frame.Through the grainy infrared camera, the man clutching his shoulder was trembling violently. He wasn't just bleeding—his skin was slick with cold sweat, his veins bulging black against his neck. He was turning. In less than two minutes, his central nervous syst
