21: Repercussion
The next morning, Jarad Brown, Mr. Nuri’s Paralegal, greeted Conor with breakfast. “Mr. Nuri was called away to one of our other offices out of town on urgent business. But I can take you anywhere you need to go this morning.” “Umm, well I probably need to check-in at work” Jarad drove Conor to the GrizlHut. As Conor walked in, he was met by the glaring eyes of a cross-armed Pops. “If you think that Mr. Cochan is going to tolerate a drug dealer working here and using his business as a distribution point, you are dumber than I thought. Hand over your uniform, NOW!” “But that’s not what happened! I can explain! No, my lawyer can explain!” Conor reached for the door but saw Jarad already driving away. “Now, Conor! Hand it over. Not only were you arrested but I had to deal with a customer complaint about you trying to charge her for something she didn’t even order! Jessica should never have married you and if I have any influence I will see you ou

22: Deadlines from Jess
Conor arrived home around noon and was surprised to see that Jessica was also home. “Jess, what are you doing here? I thought you were at your dad’s office today.” Jessica was sitting at their little dining table eating a salad, “I could ask you the same thing! Isn’t today one of your shifts with the Grizlhut? And where were you last night? I never heard you come in.” Conor’s face heated as he tried to decide how to explain. “Well… last night I ran into some legal trouble… I was framed while on a Pizza run..” “WHAT!!! What the hell Conor!?” “I am innocent! My lawyer can explain. Anyway, Pops wouldn’t listen, he just knows the cops questioned me, so he canned me. Didn’t even let me explain…” “You got fired? Conor, we have rent due this week! Five days!” “I know, I know! But I have a new job! A friend helped me talk to the general manager at Jackson furniture! I start tomorrow. And from what I hear, they normally pay better than

23: Dinner for Two...
Conor hung up with a small glimmer of hope, but still a bit at a loss as to how the week would go. He was hopeful that his new job would provide some opportunities, but that didn’t start until the morning. He decided to wander around town and perhaps look for something nice he could make for Jessica for diner. As he strolled through town, he come to a local megastore. Things tended to be less expensive here and they carried many products from all over the kingdom. Conor wandered inside, hoping to be inspired. He strode down one of the aisles, an elderly old lady reached for something on the top shelf. She was so short she was practically climbing the shelves to try to grab a box. Conor rushed over and offered to help. A look of relief washed over the lady’s face. “Thank you, young man. The one on the left please.” Conor easily grabbed the box of cereal and placed it in her cart. “No problem. Glad I could help.” The old lady smiled at him and said, “You are ra

24: Peace Offering
Conor arrived home and set about preparing dinner. He started with a shrimp bisque bourbon soup, followed by a shrimp scampi. The smell of roasting garlic filled the kitchen as he worked. He placed two candles the store manager had provided on their small table and laid out a nice dining set. Everything looked set. He only hoped Jessica would actually be home on time tonight. Jessica walked in just as Conor set steaming bowls of soup on the table. “You made diner again?” Jessica sounded pleased but anxious. “Conor, this is really nice, but… we don’t have the money for this!” “Ha… well actually that is a funny story. Sit, and I will tell you about my adventure.” Conor recounted his trip to the store and how the manager had given them a voucher for the food. “I was even able to get some stuff for later in the week with the remainder.” “Oh, your poor face! That witch really did a number! I suppose your new look at least made you presentable enough she assumed y

25: Conor the Salesman
Conor arrived at Jackson’s Furniture at 8 a.m. sharp the next morning. He had chosen to wear his new suit and tie since that was similar to what the sales team had been wearing yesterday. When he walked through the doors, several sales associates powerwalked over to him. “Can we help you find anything today?” “Are you looking for a sofa, or perhaps a recliner?” “How about dining room furniture?” “I can direct you to the bedroom suites.” Conor was overwhelmed and held up his hands. “I am a new employee. I am just here to meet with Mr. Matthews and get my assignment.” “Oh.” The dejection and disappointment were clear on each of their faces. As they drifted away, one lingered and finally stepped forward, hand outstretched. “name’s Arty. Arty Maron. You said you were to meet with the boss?” Arty was a thin man in his later fifties, with wispy gray hair combed over a balding head. He wore thin glasses near the end of his nose. “Yes

26: Investing in our Future
As Conor made his way up the stairs and along the walkway to his apartment, he found Yuri waiting outside. At fifteen, Yuri was still a bit short for his age, but was quickly maturing. Conor felt like he was a little brother he never had. “Conor! You’re home!” “What’s up Yuri? Everything ok?” “You are not going to believe this! Mr. Nuri managed to get me a spot at the Bayan Gaming Convention this weekend! He says mom can take me and I will be able to present the game! This is HUGE!!! All the top companies will be modeling the new games and systems there! If I can get one of them to like ‘Song of Dragons’, we could go multiplatform and, and…” “WHOA WHOA WHOA, slow down Yuri!” Conor chuckled, “I am excited for you. But take it one step at a time. I am thrilled you get to go to the convention but make sure before you make any decisions you talk to Mr. Nuri. His team knows how contracts work. Let them be the ones to negotiate anything, understand?”

27: Heed the Safety Instructions
Conor woke the next morning feeling excited for the day. Jessica was well on her way to getting very needed advertisement for the mall, Peter Miros would be getting solid business from the city council and chamber of commerce and Yuri seemed set for a big launch of his new game this coming weekend. Things were definitely looking up for the week. Conor knew full well that while these things were going well, he still had only a few days left to make up the remainder needed for their bills by the end of the week. Conor was making his way to Jackson Furniture when his phone rang. “Hello? “Mr. Brantley, this is Jarad, with Mr. Nuri’s office. I am working with Abby Weiss today and we got a call from the spice shop near GrizlHut. It seems the Spice of Life mix is doing really well, and the owner is asking for some part time help with some of his taste testing events. Would you be interested in the work?” “Umm, yes! When is he needing me? I

28 Spice Emporium
Three o’clock came, and Conor clocked out from Jackson’s Furniture and made his way to Mr. Arroz’s Spice Emporium. As he came around the corner, the pungent aroma reminded him of the days he had spent recently working next door with Cara. He wondered briefly if she had a shift this afternoon. “Ah, Conor my boy! Come, come!” called an enthusiastic Mr. Arroz in a thick Pruarian accent. The jovial older man had always been kind to Conor and seemed thrilled to see him today. “Conor, that combination you suggested is selling like nothing I have ever had in my shop! You are truly Celia blessed! And that Mr. Nuri you introduced me to is already having orders placed for a shop near his headquarters!” Conor smiled at the darker-skinned Mr. Arroz, “I am thrilled. I am glad business is doing well for you. Mr. Nuri’s assistant said you might have some work for me?” “Ah, yes! Come!” he waved Conor over to a table he had set out for people passing by to sample spices. “I need someone here to watc

Conor nodded to Mr. Arroz and shook his hand. “Thank you, sir, for this opportunity. I’ve got this.”            “Good, and if you do as well out here as you did creating that spice of life, I will have something special in it for you at the end of the shift.” Mr. Arroz wandered back into his shop leaving Conor to stir the crowds. Conor watched as families wandered by the booth, a few stopping to sniff from time to time, but most were heading to GrizlHut or to the arcade on the other side of the Spice Emporium. As the evening ticked by, Conor enjoyed the pleasant interactions with the few patrons who stopped in and even made a few sales.  As he watched the evening crowds, a familiar head of brunette hair bobbed out of the GrizlHut and headed past him.            “Conor?”

The next morning, Conor awoke to frigid winter air. Apparently, winter had finally come, but at least Jessica had let him keep his blanket today. From the kitchen, he heard Jessica preparing breakfast.            “Hurry up Conor. Don’t be late for Jackson’s! Remember Rent is due Friday!”            Conor rolled out of bed and showered before coming to the kitchen. When he arrived, Jessica had already left for work. He sighed and scrambled an egg, eating it right out of the pan before jogging to work himself. When he arrived, he found a glaring Mr. Matthews waiting for him.            “Care to explain why I have an irate client threatening to sue us after having an accident shortly after leaving our loading dock?”
