Chapter 261
Kane's POV I hope to the Goddess that Willow’s tears this time are tears of joy. She’s all over the place with her emotions, and I can’t keep up anymore. I put Adare on the bed, and he quickly bounces up to sit on her lap. “Thank you for my present,” she says and gives him a hug. I sit next to them on the edge of the bed. “When is your birthday?” she asks. “Twenty-five August. Open it,” I say impatiently. “That was after we met.” “Yes, but I was here. Remember? I ran away.” She laughs softly, and tears into the little gift Adare was holding in his hands. She opened the velvet box and stares at me in confusion. “What is it?” she asks and pulls the key out, holding it between her fingers. “The key to our new place. They finished a week ago.” Her eyes light up. “We have a home?” “Yes,” I smile. I can feel genuine excitement and joy now. “I had it furnished, but you can change anything you don’t like.” She doesn’t seem to care, but she had been eager to get out of my mother’s ap

Chapter 262
Kane takes the key from my trembling hand and unlocks the door to our new apartment. It takes me a while to say anything. It’s huge and so much more beautiful than I envisioned. When Kane said he had the place furnished, I assumed it would look like our apartment. Black and white and nearly clinical. He went the opposite way. The layers of paint and plaster had been stripped down to the original grey-blue brick, and the hardwood floors glow warmly in the sunlight streaming in from the large windows. The wall connecting with the garden was basically just one big window with sliding doors opening up onto a large patio that overlooked the beautifully restored gardens. The fountains bubble merrily, and the green grass invites me to run outside and play. In the corner of the garden, there iss a colourful jungle gym with swings and slides, and sandpit for Adare to enjoy. Surrounding the play area are wooden tables and chairs with umbrellas. Kane anxiously watches me as I attempt to take i

Chapter 263
Kane's POV I had the kitchen designed in much the same way as the one upstairs, but this one is bigger, with massive double-door stainless steel fridges, two ovens, stoves, every gadget imaginable, and a beautiful pantry with all the ingredients my heart could desire in it. Right in the middle of the kitchen is a large island with a black granite top and barstools around it. It’s my hope that there will come a time that we’ll be able to sit here as a family together while I cook supper and catch up with my pups’ days. “Wow,” Willow says and looks around the kitchen with big eyes. “This is definitely your favourite wet dream.” I laugh. “Yes, it is.” “I’m never going to get you out of here, am I?” “Hm--” I pull her into my arms and lift her hair away so I can nibble her neck --“there is always one guaranteed way to get me out of the kitchen.” She shivers and giggles. “No chance. You’d rather bend me over the counter than leave your happy place.” “Oh good,” I tease. “I get to be i

Chapter 264
Kane’s POV The day starts off pleasantly enough. At one point, I fetch Rosie to join us. Her mate refuses. He’s happy to stay here, content with Rosie’s new position as our nanny, but he has no desire to mingle with the leadership of the tribe. I don’t push him, but I do insist that Rosie join us. Adare adores Roland, and he needs a friend. The adults sit at the new picnic tables, watching the pups play, taking joy in their exuberance, as werewolves are prone to do. “How long was your pregnancy,” I ask Rosie after about an hour of watching the two fling sand in the air and using their buckets and spades as drums. “Why your majesty?” “Kings usually grow up with their chancellors. They form a friendship bond at a very young age. It looks to me like that is what Adare is doing.” “This young, King?” “Yes,” I say and lean back in my lawn chair. It’s a well established fact that kings and their advisors grow up together -- that’s how they form the vital trust that they'll need later in

Chapter 265
Despite my fears, Adare seems happy in his new room, especially the tub with all the fun new toys. He had a long, busy day, and the moment I put him down, he falls asleep. I switch on his nightlight and sit on my knees next to his cot, watching him sleep. He’s so little, and already Kane’s talking about the day he’ll be king.I knew from the get-go that any children I have with Kane will grow up to become important wolves, but I didn’t think it would bother me this much, and I have no idea how to process it. Deep down, I know I have to talk to my mate about it, but I don't even know how to do that anymore. I don't think he'd understand.“Willow?” Kane whispers from the door. “Are you okay?”No. “Yes,” I lie. “Just having a hard time letting go here.”“I know,” he says and steps into the room, but doesn’t come any closer. “I need to talk to you about something. Will you come to the living room?”“Right now?”“If you don’t mind.”“In a minute,” I say, and run Adare’s little fingers betw

Chapter 266
Kane's POV I stand on the outside of the clearance, watching Willow as she walks into the middle and sits down. We’re not the only wolves at the temple tonight – some of the visiting wolves are deeply religious, and they come here to pray on a regular basis. Willow won’t shift to human while strangers surround her. Tonight, the soothsayer decided to be here. He’s standing at the foot of the effigy, dressed in his usual purple robes, giving blessings to the wolves that ask for them. While keeping an eye on my mate, I shift and kneel next to the flowers. I pick out a few, and take off the crystal I tied around my wrist before I shifted. I knot the strap around the stems of the flowers and secure the string to my wrist again before I sit down to watch the gathering. Willow walks up to the soothsayer. He holds out a white robe to her. Behind her, the wolves respectfully turn their backs while she shifts to human and pulls the robe over her head. I’m not thrilled about the religious di

Chapter 267
‘You will lose one you love.’ I’m not sure Erica was the one Silke was talking about. All I know is that it's my turn. Kane needs me to be strong for him now. She did get that part right.I check on Adare, then on Kane who is sitting on our new porch, staring straight ahead of him at the wall enclosing the garden. My heart is broken. I loved Erica, she was more of a mother to me than my own ever was, but I am sadder for my mate than myself. He just got to know her, and then she was ripped away from him. He didn’t even have a chance to say goodbye to her.No one had that chance last night. In all, two-hundred-and-sixty-three wolves lost their lives in one fell swoop, and more than two hundred others were found dead in their beds this morning.Kane didn’t just lose his mother. He lost lifelong friends and trusted Gammas.Everyone over sixty who were in wolf form at the time The Templar witches launched their attack, dropped dead where they stood. That was some fearsome magic, and we ha

Chapter 268
Kane's POVWillow held it together until Adare left, then she couldn’t do it anymore. As soon as the pup was out of sight, she fled to our room, slammed the door in my face, and locked it. I tried not to take it too personally, and truthfully we both needed some space. She'd come out and talk to me when we were both ready. When Rosie took him from her, the pup let out a heart-breaking cry that very nearly brought me to my knees. He just wanted his mama, and for a minute or two, I was tempted to order Willow to go with him. But through the numbing haze of my own pain and grief, the certainty that she needed to stay here bled through. She is right. If she leaves too, I’ll be lost.I sit flat on the grass in the garden I designed with pups in mind. I was a fool for thinking we had any hope to live a normal, happy family life here. The only way we’ll ever know peace is if I fake my own death and take my family far away, live as rogues on some remote island or something. But I’d have the d

Chapter 269
I have never seen Kane so broken. It wasn't just the death of his mother, it was everything else weighing him down. but I think Adare’s departure was the last straw for him. We stood at the funeral pyre, waiting for the Omegas to bring out his mother. My mate was distant, barely talking to anyone, just staring off into the distance. Patrick wasn't doing much better. Mina left with the other mothers, and Patrick stood with his arm folded across his chest, staring at the empty funeral pyre, his face completely impassive and his eyes empty. I tried my best to comfort the brothers, but even my usually strong mate’s knees buckled when the Omegas came out of the cabin, carrying the body wrapped in white linens and gently placed it on the massive pyre. The soothsayer handed a burning torch to Kane. He was as white as a ghost when he took the fire from the soothsayer, his hand shaking wildly when he walked up to the pyre and lit the dry wood. Patrick sobbed loudly when the dry wood caught

Chapter 270
Kane's POVI don’t expect Willow to offer up a solution to our war problem. She doesn’t have any answers for me, none of us know what to do. Even Zael doesn’t have a clue. The way the humans are waging this war is insidious and the minute we bring the war to them, we’ll look like the savage animals they’ve been showing on the news, and we’ll lose. Not to mention that they outnumber us, and they have superior weaponry. There's no way we can defeat them in direct combat.Sighing, I get to my knees and look around my son’s destroyed room. This is the worst part of the war. Sending our children away, the soul of any pack, our joy, and pride. Helpless anger washes over me, but the mindless rage is gone. “I’m going outside,” I say and get up.“Do you want company?” Willow asks.“No.”“Are you…going to do something to yourself?”“Just because you become suicidal every time you face a challenge, doesn’t mean I do it.”“Wow,” my mate mutters, but that’s all she says.“I’m sorry,” I say and pin
