When lunch was over, the lawyer took his leave, but not before highly praising Mara’s cooking skills and promising to visit anytime he was in the area. Mara breathed a huge sigh of relief when he finally entered his car and drove off. She now had the entire living room to herself and the love of her life.“Have you seen Leo? Let’s go see him,” she said, pulling Leo by the hand.“Oh, don’t worry. I’ve gone to see him. He was fast asleep. Let’s not disturb him please.”“Then I need to put him to bed,” she said and hurried off alone to the nursery. As expected, she found her son sleeping in a not-so-desirable position, so she carefully lifted him from the ground and transferred him to the bed as quietly as possible to avoid waking him. When she was done, she went back to the living room and jumped on Leo’s lap like a favorite daughter jumping on daddy’s lap.“So, tell me everything that happened to you in that horrible place,” she demanded as she snuggled against his chest.“You mean th

The first greeting Mara got from her mother was an angry scoff. Clearly, the woman was not happy to see her or anyone else for that matter. But Mara was not deterred. She had always expected it. What she had feared was getting attacked. Fortunately, there was a glass barrier between herself and the woman. It seemed the room was specially designed to ensure the safety of anyone who interacted with her whenever she was in her bad moods.“It seems you’re all settled, so I’ll take my leave now. You know where to find me when you’re done,” the receptionist said with a smile and made for the door.“Thank you,” Mara called after her and she nodded in acknowledgement as she left. When she had gone out of the room and closed the door behind her, Mara turned to her mother. She took a deep breath and then exhaled. How would she begin? From the beginning of course.“Mother, I’m your daughter, Mara. Do you remember me? Your ex-husband, Benjamin Johnson, raised me. Do you remember him?”, Mara asked

Benjamin Johnson wished his stepdaughter goodbye and then went his way. He would have liked to accompany to see her safely home, but he had more than several times gotten the hint that she did not want him to know her residence. He had no choice but to respect her decision and let her do what she thought best for herself. At least, she was no longer the little Mara under his care. She was now an adult woman with a child and a job of her own. But that didn’t mean he wasn’t curious about her life. He would very much love to know if she was married yet and if her husband was a good man who took good care of her. But after what had happened between them, he felt he didn’t have the right to ask such questions. If only he knew that was how she also felt! When Mara got a cab, her stepfather went in search of a cab of his own. He had only stayed with her to see her get in a cab and wish her and Leo goodbye. Now that she was in the backseat of the cab all alone with her son who was as quiet as

When they got back into the house, the lawyer had thought that Mara would take Leo aside and confront him concerning the issue of him letting his wife have everything that belonged to him. But to her surprise, Mara did nothing of the sort. Instead she acted like nothing was bothering her. So, the lawyer breathed a deep sigh of relief. She had been worried that she would be the cause of an argument, if not a quarrel, between the two. After having lunch with them and engaging in some entertaining discussions, it was finally time for the woman to take her leave, and Mara saw her to the door.“Thank you for telling me what you told me. Leo would never have told me,” she whispered to her, and the woman nodded in understanding. She knew how Mara felt and she also understood the reason for Leo’s decision.“Just remember that he loves you very much and he will do anything for you,” she admonished and Mara thanked her before wishing her goodbye. After seeing off the lawyer, she returned to mee

When Leo walked into the sitting room, he found Mara in the exact same position they had left her: hunched over her computer, working. But he was quite sure that she was not doing her normal company work. What he could glimpse on her computer screen looked like it had more to do with research than anything else, and her work had little or nothing to do with that. She had begun this new activity only recently and had been keeping at it almost every day. Leo had not asked her what it was about and neither had she volunteered to tell him about it. He was curious, of course, but he would give her all the time in the world. Whenever she was ready to tell him about it, she would. If she never did, then so be it. She was an adult and he would respect her as such.“Why are you guys back in?”, Mara asked, without looking at her Leos.“Something happened. I received something strange from someone we both know.”The tone of his voice and the manner in which he made the statement caught Mara’s ea
