Chapter 91: Scent of a Loser
EllieBlade was getting away, and Ellie couldn't stand it. She knew that he was going to slip right through her fingers. If she had acted on her own without waiting for Carter to get into place, she might've been able to stop him, but since she was following the plan and trying to give Carter a chance to fall into place before she launched her attack, Blade was moving much more quickly than she was. And he was about to cut right past her forces without Ellie so much as landing a paw on him."Luna Ellie, Alpha River wants you to move due east and then cut south to try and get in front of Blade and force him back toward his pack and Ulysses' forces coming in from the north," Dara, Ellie's Omega on the phone, said in her head. She had to assume that had come from Jim, who was doing the same for River."Let them know that I will cut east if that's what I need to do to get in front of Blade, but if we come into close contact with him again, I'm attacking. I don't care if it's only our pack

Chapter 92: Outnumbered
RiverRunning was an activity River enjoyed when he was racing his friends or going for a leisurely jog. Sprinting across the forest floor in his wolf form, terrified that something horrible was about to happen to his fated mate--again--was not his idea of a good time. In fact, River could think of at least a hundred and fifty things he'd rather be doing. When Jim had come through the mind-link to tell him that Ellie was moving in to attack Blade whether or not the rest of the packs were in position, he'd thought that the Omega he'd put in charge of communication had to be mistaken; surely, he'd misheard… or something. How in the world did she think she was going to take on that pack of evil, scrupulous wolves with absolutely no help? She wasn't thinking. That was the only explanation he could come up with. She was so angry and upset at what the other Alpha had done to her that she was thinking irrationally. But far be it for him to tell a woman she was thinking irrationally....So al

Chapter 93: Size Advantage
RiverEllie was in front of him, charging right for Blade, when two huge wolves cut her off. River did his best to get over there to help her, but she didn't need him. It only took her a matter of seconds to dispatch both of them. River couldn't help but smile as he watched her in action. She was pretty d*mn amazing. But this was a fight, and not something to be taken lightly, so River got involved, too. He saw Ellie going after Blade, but the Alpha wasn't willing to engage with her. Apparently, Glade wasn't so big and tough when Ellie wasn't outnumbered drastically as she had been the last time he'd hurt her..As Blade took off from the woods to his right, Ellie was right on his tail. Unfortunately the b*stard was too fast for her. River wanted to help, already having proven that he was faster than Blade. He was headed that way when another large, dark wolf leapt in front of him, teeth bared. River paused and growled right back at the wolf, which was at least six inches taller than

Chapter 94: Trap
EllieShe'd had him--the b*stard was within her grasp. And someohow, stupid Blade had managed to get away.He was on the run now, though. It was just a matter of time before she either cornered him or he got tired and had to give up. Ellie would keep running forever, until her legs fell off, if that's what it took to track down the Alpha who'd tried to kill her and finish him off once and for all.Across the way, she saw River flying across the forest floor. The two of them both sprinted off after Blade. Being able to talk to River at this point would be really helpful. Unfortunately, they hadn't marked one another yet, so they still didn't have mind-link capabilities. That needed to change. The idea of what that would entail was distracting, so Ellie put it out of her mind and focused on gaining ground on Blade. Even without being able to communicate directly with River, the two of them would be able to work together to get Blade; she just knew it."Luna Ellie?" Dara's voice brought

Chapter 95: Leap of Faith
EllieBlade was running as fast as he possibly could. Ellie was keeping up, but as Blade exited the woods and was running through the meadow that Ellie knew bordered on a gorge so deep, if he fell in, they'd never hear from him again. It was coming up so quickly that Ellie was hesitant to keep running at full speed for fear she might fall in herself.River came between the trees to her right, and now all three of them were out in the open land. From here, it looked like the next set of woods was just ahead a hundred yards or so, but those trees were not an accessible place to hide, unless Blade was a really, really good jumper.Ahead of her, Ellie watched as Blade realized there was a hole in the ground ahead of him. He slid, turning sideways, his back feet swinging around and dust and rocks flying into the air. He tipped to his right, his eyes bulging, but then, before he teetered in, he was able to fall back the other direction. The gorge hadn't been his demise, but he was trapped

Chapter 96: Aftermath
RiverIt was difficult to process what he'd just seen. If River had heard about it from someone else, he probably wouldn't have ever believed it. What in the world had Blade been thinking trying to make that jump across the gorge when his neck was ripped open? Was he trying to die?Maybe he was. Maybe he just couldn't stand the thought of a woman killing him. But Ellie had gotten the better of him for sure, and if River hadn't reminded her that she didn't have to end him, she probably would have.He couldn't blame her. After what Blade had done to her, she had every right to rip his throat out and call it a day.He was just afraid she'd feel guilty about it later. Now that Blade was dead anyway, looking at Ellie, River saw the same shock he felt and had to wonder if maybe she wouldn't blame herself and feel guilty about his death despite the fact that he'd essentially killed himself. Making that jump even when one was at a hundred percent wouldn't be easy.He should've never tried it.

Chapter 97: Tying Up Loose Ends
EllieThe daze she'd been in since she'd seen Blade fall to his death was beginning to fade away as Ellie took River's hand and went to her office to meet with the other Alphas. It had all happened so quickly, she still needed time to process it.In her mind, she kept going over what she could have done differently. Maybe if she hadn't bitten him so hard, he wouldn't have acted so callously and tried to clear that gorge. Maybe she should've stayed on top of him until they could take him into custody. Maybe she should've tried to stop him when he went running toward the gorge. She could come up with a million things she could've done differently, but it had played out the way that it did. And there was nothing she could do about it now. So… she may as well get her head back in the game and pay attention because they had an entire pack to deal with now, one without an Alpha, one that would be needing direction, and possibly discipline. The other Alphas were already sitting around a tabl

Chapter 98: Addressing the Pack
RiverThe sun was bright overhead as River, Ellie, and the other Alphas went to Crying Wolf to address the pack and let them know what the plan would be. The night before, Omega warriors from every pack had gone to make sure that order was maintained in Blade's previous pack, but now it was time for the shifters to get some answers. They needed to hear from the Alphas themselves.River could tell that Ellie was nervous. She'd held his hand in the car as they'd driven over together. The other Alphas would meet them there. When River pulled into a parking spot near what he believed to be Blade's office, he saw Ulysses' getting out of his car a few spots over. He didn't see any of the other Alphas just yet.Taking a deep breath, he turned to Ellie. "Are you all right, sweetheart?""Yeah, I'm fine," Ellie said, managing a smile. "I'm just feeling a little sorry for some of these people. They can't help that they were born into this pack, and I'm guessing that they can't all be evil. I'm s

Chapter 99: Dissatisfied
EllieAs soon as she was done talking to the former members of Crying Wolf, Ellie took River's hand and did her best to look calm. On the inside, her emotions were churning like the ocean during a storm. She didn't want anyone else to see that, though. She had to give them the impression that she was cool, calm, and collected. The two of them stayed with the other Alphas, waiting to see what questions the pack members might have or what they needed to do to put people at ease. As far as Ellie could tell, the dividing of the pack mates into the new packs was going well. She didn't hear anyone shouting or complaining. As the families approached the Gammas who were overseeing the new assignments, most of them seemed calm. Fathers and mothers had their arms around their children. Elderly couples held hands. Some of the younger people were in groups that appeared to be more like friends than families, but that was okay. She was willing to allow them to go together to a new pack so long as

Chapter 100: Fears and Regrets
RiverGetting the former pack members of Crying Wolf organized and moved to their new packs took a lot of time. Over the next few days after the Alphas met with the full group in the meeting center, most of their attention was focused on making sure that every threat was taken care of and that everyone was moved comfortably. It didn't leave much time for anything else for any of the Alphas or their leadership team, but River wasn't sure how upset about that he should be. The next thing that had to happen was the marriage ceremony, and as much as he wanted to marry Ellie, he was nervous. He knew he wanted to marry Ellie; there was no question in his mind now that he wanted to be with her. It seemed clear that they were meant to be together, too. He'd tried to leave her and quickly found out it was not only an awful idea but nearly impossible. So the nerves he felt had nothing to do with the commitment he was about to make.He was nervous that she might decide he needed some vengeance.
