Chapter 111: Dixie
DIXIE RIPPED THE TAB off the envelope."This is so exciting." Elisabeth bounced on the balls of her feet, hovering over Dixie's shoulder."It's not that exciting." She nudged the other woman away before pulling the photographs out of the envelope."Are you kidding? It is too exciting. Let me see."Together they poured over the dozen images of local landmarks and buildings that had withstood the fire of 68 and time. Dixie had been hesitant about taking on this project, but she and Elisabeth had made it into their personal scavenger hunt. They'd even found a few old farmhouses to document that hadn't been part of the original project."Those look so good." Elisabeth squealed and clapped her hands together."They're just snapshots of some buildings." Dixie smiled and flipped through the pictures one more time."Are you going to tell Benji about this now?" Elisabeth turned and leaned against the island in Dixie's house, facing her."I should." She winced and glanced at the

Chapter 112: Benji
BENJI REACHED BEHIND HIM, grasping for Dixie's hand. She wasn't in this alone. He'd stick with her while they handled this asshole. Let the whole town see what a dipshit he was at last.It was just their luck that the first officer to react to the situation was Liam Jones. The guy was an easy going country boy-until he got into uniform.Where was Dixie's hand?"Jace." Liam lifted his hand, his focus on Jace. "Hey, Jace? Why don't we go around back and talk?"Benji glanced at Dixie just as she darted around him."Fuck you, Jones," Jace spat."Jace?" Her tone was all soothing and sweetness. Not what Jace deserved."Dixie-don't." Benji grasped her hand, tugging her away from where Liam and Jace now stood toe to toe.She whirled on Benji, her calm, collected nature shining through. "Stop.""Dix-""You're only making this worse. Just-stop." The chill rolling off her was almost cold enough to bring the Texas temperature down a couple degrees.Benji stared at her, too st

Chapter 113: Dixie
DIXIE STOOD BACK, ADMIRING the photographs. The ones she'd taken with Benji's camera.Shit.She wasn't supposed to be thinking about him."Why are you still here? Are you hiding?" Elisabeth breezed into the room that had been re-purposed for assembling the new scrapbooks."Yes." Dixie winced. There was no point in lying to her best friend."Have you seen or spoken to him since Saturday?" Elisabeth set the stack of newspapers down on the long table that stretched down the middle of the room."No." Dixie's insides quaked. It wasn't uncommon for her early week schedule to make it hard to see Benji, but they always talked."Seriously? No texts? Phone calls? Nothing?""It'll be too hard if we talk. I have to go cold turkey.""Okay. Does he know you're breaking up with him?""I thought I was pretty clear the last time we spoke." Or had she only thought those things? That whole conversation in her driveway was a blur. She'd been operating on autopilot and all she wanted to

Chapter 114: Benji
BENJI HAD A LIST of things a mile long to get done today, but his heart wasn't in it.Five days. He'd never gone that long without seeing Dixie. Not since they'd begun their lessons. He'd shown up at her place last night hoping they were still on, but the darkened house spoke volumes. She wasn't showing up, and she wasn't speaking to him."Hey." Scarlett jogged up to him as he plodded toward his truck."Yeah?""Gosh, tone it down there. You might scare people, Chipper Charlie.""Chipper Charlie?" Benji frowned at his cousin."Yeah, that didn't work." Scarlett blew out a breath and swiped the back of her hand across her brow. "You headed to the store?""Yeah. Got the list." He waved the bit of paper at her."Great. One other thing?""Yeah?""No driving by Dixie's and I need more wine.""You aren't the boss of me." Benji scowled at Scarlett."No, I'm not, but you're seriously moping. I'm worried if you keep going by there she's going to take out a restraining or

Chapter 115: Dixie
DIXIE PEERED DOWN THE street at her house. Why did Jace have to do this on a Wednesday? She silently cursed her ex.The coast looked clear. On a normal day she'd be home maybe half an hour before Benji got there, if she was lucky. Her luck stunk lately. She accelerated down the street and hit the garage opener. For the last week she'd stayed at Elisabeth's. It was nice. Comforting to be around others. Plus Jace was a pain in the ass. She hadn't missed him being in rehab one bit. What was worse, it didn't appear to have dampened his temper.Dixie parked in the garage and slipped out to get a look at her front door. The metal mailbox bolted next to the door was ripped off. Some of the siding was cracked and it would need to be repaired.Great.One more thing to add to the list of things to do.When Liam Jones had called her about it during the work day, she'd almost cried. Except Jace wasn't worth her tears. The only thing to be done was get a handyman out to fix it."G

Chapter 116: Benji
BENJI SET THE STACK of chairs into the rack a little too hard. The whole thing rolled back a few inches and two chairs nearly slid off the hooks."Easy," Garth muttered and put his stack into the rack."If you're going to persist in having this bad mood, go home." Scarlett adjusted the chairs at risk of falling."I don't have a bad mood," Benji grumbled."Dixie stood you up last night. You have a bad mood. I understand it, but I don't want to clean up after it." Scarlett glanced around the barn. "All accounted for?""Yup." Garth grabbed the strap and with Scarlett's help secured the rental chairs in place.Saturday would be two weeks since Benji had seen Dixie. She wasn't speaking to him. He didn't know what the hell was going on unless someone slipped up and said something."Leave." Scarlett pointed at the doors. "You're getting on my nerves and I have too much to do today to put up with you like this.""Scarlett, give him a break," Garth said. She wheeled around t

Chapter 117: Dixie
DIXIE THUMBED THROUGH THE book, the group's conversation washing over her. Book club night usually energized her. It was a bi-monthly opportunity to be in a room full of women she counted as friends. They'd selected a paranormal book this time, and though Dixie had tried she just couldn't get into it. Hear head and heart were stuck in the real world and no amount of sexy werewolf shifter could fix that.Shonda leaned over and gestured at Dixie's plate. "Are you done with your dinner?""Oh, yeah. Thanks.""Something wrong?" Shonda's gaze narrowed."No."Shonda stared at her for a moment longer. She wasn't fooled and Dixie knew it. If she could put Shonda off another week or two she'd be able to talk about Benji without crying uncontrollably. At least that's what Dixie was hoping. She glanced across the room at where Elisabeth sat. She'd arrived late and had to squeeze in where she could. Had something happened at the library? Would Elisabeth tell Shonda about Benji before Di

Chapter 118: Benji
BENJI TAPPED THE NECK of his empty beer.Jessica North braced her hand on the bar and quirked a brow at him."Come on. Hook me up with one more." He spoke slowly, doing his best to get each word out clearly.Jessica shook her head. "Not just no, but hell no."Another patron of The Watering Hole beckoned Jessica for a drink. She poured the man a beer, leaving Benji to sit on his stool and stew.Elisabeth's plan had gone down in flames. He'd been certain that if he could just talk to her everything would be fine. She must be really serious about ending things with him even if that wasn't what her heart was telling her. Dixie was a lead with her head, not her heart, kind of woman.A heavy hand settled on Benji's shoulder. He turned his head and squinted up at his brother. "What the fuck are you doing here?""Jess called." Garth nodded at the bartender."I should have realized something was wrong when he showed up here alone." Jessica thumbed at Benji.Scarlett slid

Chapter 119: Dixie
DIXIE SAT CURLED UP on the sofa staring at the carpet.Elisabeth was in the kitchen heating up leftovers for lunch. She hadn't said much to Dixie this morning, and that was fine with her. Dixie wanted to be alone with her thoughts."Your phone is ringing again," Elisabeth called out.Dixie was inclined to wait for the caller to be forwarded to voicemail, but the irritation in Elisabeth's voice told her she was on thin ice. Dixie wasn't ready to go home or deal with life by herself. She got up and crossed to the table.Mother Robinson lit up the screen.Dixie recoiled."Who is it?" Elisabeth peered over her shoulder. "Again?"Dixie ignored the call. She couldn't count the number of times her former mother-in-law had called over the last two months. Sometimes it was two or three times a day.The phone lit up again."Answer it." Elisabeth bumped Dixie. Her thumb slid across the screen, flashing green. She stared in horror as the call connected and the seconds began

Chapter 120: Benji
BENJI'S HEAD HAD STOPPED pounding. Now he had a slight throb going on, but that wasn't the worst of his problems. It was time to face the music. He'd tried to sneak down to The Hole to settle his tab from the previous night before their afternoon wedding, but it hadn't worked out. Now this little trip was a family affair with Garth, Scarlett and Cole tagging along. They weren't even trying to hide their perverse joy at his misery. At least it gave him something other than Dixie to think about. And taught him a lesson. No more drowning his sorrows. It only led to more pain. He'd get through this, even if it felt like there was nowhere to go without Dixie in the picture. People had survived heartache for centuries. He'd figure it out, too.Benji parked at the curb rather than the lot. It was already packed, and he wasn't keen on staying longer than he had to."Don't buy a round or anything. We are here and gone, got it?" Benji twisted in his seat to look each of the three
