Stella POVI required some air. After everything that happened last night, my body refused to settle. My mind was still replaying Jimmy’s last sentence on the phone. His father had placed me on a list. A part of me sensed it was tied to my history. The pain that surged in my chest upon recognizing that likelihood was enough to keep me awake all night. When morning arrived I nearly pleaded with Jimmy to join me for a walk. He consented swiftly suspiciously so as if he too required a break, from the house and all that was going on inside. We stepped out simultaneously departing from the neighborhood both of us initially silent. The atmosphere was muggy, dense as if the sky intended to pour but remained uncertain. I gazed at my hands interlacing my fingers.Jimmy looked at me. His gaze was steadier than it had been yesterday. Something lingered within. A tempest. A secret he was unwilling to share with me.“Did you get any sleep?" he inquired gently.I shook my head. "Not much. How, abou

Stella POVConcentrating proved to be unattainable. My gaze remained fixed on the screen as I reviewed Fergusons message for the time.In two hours I’ll come get you so we can head to my parents’ house to begin organizing the wedding.I yelled. Truly yelled. Megan almost inhaled her juice.“What’s happening?" she inquired, hurrying over as if she anticipated spotting blood on the ground.I thrust the phone toward her. "See!”She glanced at it once blinked a couple of times then gradually placed a hand over her heart. "Oh my God Stella he truly means it. He really means it.”“I’m not emotionally prepared " I stated, wandering around the living room, like a kitten. "I carry trauma. I hold secrets. I face two adversaries. I can’t go choose wedding colors.”Megan muffled a chuckle with her hand. "Girl you already have the ring on. You two nearly burned the place down a couple nights ago. He’s prepared. The real question is, why aren’t you?”“I’m prepared." I ceased pacing. "I believe I am

Stella POVThe trip home seemed like a form of punishment. My chest stayed heavy throughout. Each jolt, on the road shook the fury and letdown brewing within me. We got there moments after Jimmy, who stood outside looking like someone prepared to leap in front of a speeding train. He approached soon as I got out of the vehicle."Stella, allow me to clarify " he said swiftly. His tone was gentle, nearly imploring.I kept on walking. I didn’t believe I could stay still. "I’ve heard it all already " I whispered. "I don’t want to become angrier than I am now. Just leave me alone Jimmy.""I didn’t wish for you to discover it this way."I shifted a bit enough to catch the anguish in his expression. It didn't bring me any comfort. "No telling of this story spares me from ruin," I replied. "So please. Not, at this moment."Megan rested her hand on his arm. "Just give her time. That’s everything she requires."I stepped indoors sensing Jimmy’s gaze piercing through me from, behind. My legs gre

Stella POVThe first day I blocked Ferguson, Jimmy, and Jonathan, my phone did not stop vibrating. It felt like the whole world was trying to claw through the screen to reach me. Calls, messages, voicemails, missed video calls. It was endless, suffocating, overwhelming.I shoved the phone under my pillow and refused to touch it.Megan sat beside me on the bed and asked softly, "You are not going to answer any of them?""No," I whispered. "I do not want anyone trying to justify anything. I do not want explanations or apologies or excuses. I need space.""They are probably freaking out," Megan said gently."I am freaking out too," I said. "But no one is calling to check on my panic. They only want to fix the problem they created before it becomes inconvenient for them."Megan exhaled. "Stella, you do not have to talk to anyone until you are ready. Even if that does not happen soon.""Thank you," I murmured. So I stayed silent.---The second day was harder.Because silence, as peaceful

Stella POVThe only things I noticed were the judge, the attorneys, Claudia sitting with her arms crossed like she belonged on a magazine cover than a defendant’s bench and Jimmy’s father sitting rigidly next, to her with a frosty smile that churned my stomach.I took a seat next to Megan my hands still clammy, from giving testimony moments. The statements I made echoed repeatedly in my mind without cease. My personal pictures. The harassment. The strike that burned. The disgrace. The club that struck my skull. The instant when all turned dark. My kidnapping, during childhood. My parents’ cries. My blood ran cold whenever I recalled it.Despite all that proof, including the recordings, documents and testimonies the judge remained unconvinced. He reclined in his chair lifted his glasses and spoke as if he wished the case would vanish."I have heard all the testimonies and examined the evidence " he stated. "Nonetheless, for some allegations the proof provided is still inadequate. Conse
