Chapter Eleven: Bad Conduct - Landry
They continue their demonstrations and now Matthan is paying closer attention. After they’ve gone through it a few more times, Mei shifts back into her human form, and I now understand why she was wearing a summer dress. She never has to change her clothes this way. Luna Marcus shifts back but has to put his shorts back on. With all the magic in the world, I wish there was a makkari who could cast a spell that would allow us to not have to strip off our clothes when we shifted, to avoid shredding them to pieces. Surely they can do that. “Since we have limited nagatas at our disposal, we’ll be going a few at a time. So, Nare, CJ, Natalia, Gary and Dwain, you go first, and you’ll be paired with Hua, Xīn yí, Fú, Yìchén and Jùn Jié.” He then turns to look at Mei, “Did I say those right?” He asks, and she smiles up at him nodding happily, and he smiles with relief turning his attention back to us. “The rest of the wolves will wait for their turn and the rest of the nagatas will step to th

Chapter Twelve: Heart of Gold - Jennifer
“Someone looks entertained,” suddenly announces Nare, yanking me back into the here and now. “Huh?” I ask, focusing my attention on her as she sits down in front of me in the packhouse dining hall. “You’re sitting here giggling with scrambled egg just hanging from your fork,” she chuckles, “So, spill. What’s so funny?” She asks while digging into her eggs benedict. “Maggie called Landry into work early this morning to help with cleaning the guest house. Poor Landry is trying not to be sick because it seems some people were very intimate and very messy in one of the rooms, and Landry has to clean it and the smell is making him ill. I feel sorry for him, but feeling and seeing how grossed out he is, is making me laugh,” I say with a giggle. “That’s because it’s hilarious,” Beatrix says with a tired chuckle. “All that rolling around and laughing took it out of you,” I tease. “It was worth it,” she says with a yawn. I can’t help but be a bit concerned. I’ve never seen Beatrix so low

Chapter Thirteen: Oh, To Be A Woman - Jennifer
Just then the sound of a crash fills the dining hall, and Nare and I both look over as pack members around the room begin to laugh. I see Jane over towards the buffet, red-faced, hair up in a ponytail with strands falling loose around her face as she looks down at the shattered plates scattered around her. Sympathy washes over me as I watch her grab a tub and begin picking up the broken pieces while trying to hide her embarrassment. I feel sad and disgusted as I look around at all the people who are just laughing at her, instead of helping her, including Nare. “Couldn’t happen to a nicer person,” Nare sniggers. I frown, “That’s not very nice.” Nare’s eyes glow brightly for a split second as she looks up at me, “That bitch doesn’t deserve kindness, not after what she did to me, or you for that matter. Have you forgotten her relentless bullying? Have you forgotten the things she did to you?” She says with strong contempt. I sigh, “Of course, I haven’t forgotten. I’m not asking you t

Chapter Fourteen: Bunkering Down - Landry
'LANDRY!' I jolt awake, looking around in disorientation for the source of the voice screaming my name, but I don’t see anyone. It’s just me and Jennifer. Jennifer! I look down and relax as I see Jennifer sleeping peacefully with her arm still draped over my lap. I smile down at my breathtaking animai whose scent is still overwhelming my senses and setting the bunker ablaze with its frangipani notes. Her body against me feels like a sweet, delectable fire that has me feeling excited and jittery at the same time. Her curls are a wild nest of hair scattered around her face and her usual cream-coloured skin is flushed a bright scarlet like she’s been doused with boiling water, and that’s not unreasonable given her beautiful skin is coated in sweat. Her breathing is slightly laboured, and her heart is beating a little faster than normal, but thankfully all I can sense from her is a peaceful deep sleep. Same for Beatrix. Beatrix has been in hibernation since Jennifer’s heat hit. It’s no

Chapter Fifteen: Sweet Dreams - Landry
“Mmm, something smells really good.” Crap! I was so busy spiralling I didn’t even notice Jennifer waking up. I look over to see her sitting up with a yawn, tugging at the bed sheets and holding them to her chest. She’s not cold, merely modest. She gives me a beautiful and radiant smile, that quickly dips into a frown filled with concern. I hate that I always make her concerned. “Lan, are you okay?” She asks. I nod, doing my best to push all my worries to the back of my mind. “I’m fine, I just didn’t want to wake you. I made breakfast,” I say with a smile, doing my best to distract her. Right on queue her stomach growls and she quickly clutches her stomach while her face turns a shade brighter than it already was from her heat, as embarrassment comes over her. “Excuse me,” she says sheepishly. I chuckle and make quick work of making up our plates and then sit on the bed beside her, handing her hers and planting a soft kiss on her cheek that probably wasn’t a good idea, as that’s a

Chapter Sixteen: After Glow - Landry
After three days of Jennifer’s heat, I should feel exhausted but instead, I feel surprisingly refreshed. Beatrix is awake and being quite the chatty Kathy to make up for lost time, which has Matthan over the moon happy. They’ve both been rather quiet for the last hour or so, so I think they’re busy catching up in their little wolfy world. I once asked Matthan what it’s like being a Wolf Spirit and what life is like for him, but it was extremely confusing. He described it as being like a pocket realm that exists both in this world and another. That my mind is like his bridge between the two, so he can simultaneously see and feel everything I do, and experience life with me, but also interact with other wolf spirits in their own world. Or something like that. It still doesn’t make any sense to me. I’m like the Avengers when Banner is trying to explain time travel to them. It does, however, make me understand Omegas a bit better though. An Omega is just a mutolupus who can’t shift, so

Chapter Seventeen: Olive Branch - Landry
As we exit the bunker and make our way into the packhouse I feel a sense of familiarity and apprehension come over Jennifer, which confuses me. Her steps begin to slow, and I start to look around for the reason when my eyes fall on two familiar faces pacing in the hallway. I take in a deep breath and hold Jennifer close and try to prepare myself for the abuse I’m probably about to receive. Jennifer’s dad, Craig, gently brings his wife to a halt and encourages her to notice Jennifer and me. Yeah, Craig and Melissa are one of the few mixed-species couples to actually get married. Supernaturals don’t really do the wedding thing because there’s no point. We mark our soulmates and that binds us for life, a wedding is just a piece of paper, and given the divorce rate among humans, it means very little and isn’t very binding. But apparently, Melissa wanted a human wedding, which I understand because she’s human. She also wanted it for her parents' sake, since Jennifer informed me that her g

Chapter Eighteen: The Unthinkable - Landry
As I let myself finally start to relax and listen to Jennifer and Beatrix bicker playfully in my mind, the voice of Alpha Amelia calling out an unusual name catches my attention. I look towards the entrance to the packhouse, and I notice Alpha Amelia greeting that same irshiust from the other week. I don’t know much about irshiusts, but she looks like hell. She looks exhausted, there are circles under her eyes, her golden eyes are all bloodshot and puffy and even her skin colour, which if I remember correctly, was a soft mocha colour, now looks a little ashy. Although the golden glitter in her skin is still catching the sunlight like a disco ball. I nudge Jennifer, direct her attention to the doorway, and note her surprise alongside my own. Alpha Amelia asks her if she’s alright, and immediately tears begin to fill the woman’s eyes and I can feel the concern growing inside of Jennifer. We tentatively walk a little closer as Amelia escorts the woman inside, while she gives Amelia a sni

Chapter Nineteen: A Kind Gesture - Jennifer
I don’t know what they put in the juice, but the pups were crazy today! Don’t get me wrong, I still adore my job, but sometimes these kiddos can require an army to wrangle them. Some days they’re mellow and just want someone to cuddle with them and read them a story. Other days, like today, they’re like jumping beans bouncing off the walls. I’ve stayed behind today to finish cleaning, so Macy could go home to her animai Kelly since today is their anniversary. I’m trying to scrub away the sticky marks off the tables from where the pups spilled their juice today when I feel something drip on my head. I look up just as I see another drip about to splatter on my face, but quickly dodge it. 'Gotta love those supernatural reflexes,' muses Beatrix. 'Tell that to my hair,' I say as I touch a sticky patch in my hair. I look up and notice the almost sap-like drops dripping from the ceiling and stare at them in bewilderment. “How on earth did they get juice on the ceiling?!” I shriek. I’m a

Chapter Twenty: Unexpected Closure - Jennifer
I look back at the torment in Jane’s eyes and I see a version of myself I don’t ever want to see again. I want so badly to tell her and free her of this torture, but it’s not my story to tell. We’re talking about Nare’s very medical history, and that’s something I have no right to discuss with anyone behind her back, let alone the person who caused it. “Jane… I very much want to tell you, but I can’t. I can tell you it’s about Michael’s sister Nare, but nothing more. I can’t break her trust or privacy, and I hope you understand that, but I will say, Michael should have told you. You deserve an answer.” “He wants me to suffer,” she says, letting go of my wrists and looking down as a tear trickles down her cheek. I gently take her hands and guide her to the windowsill to sit down. “I can’t speak to what is going through his head, but I do understand what rejection feels like, and even with everything you put me through, I wouldn’t wish it upon you. It’s a pain that… there just aren’t
