Ava…?" Samantha's eyes narrowed at her. “Oh my God I feel so hurt. How could you?” Eva took a deep breath before replying "Relax Sam, I would never forget about it," she said with a strained smile. "But actually, it has been vague for a while. The job has been. overwhelming.” Samantha folded her arms, her eyes glittering with curiosity. "Overwhelming enough to forget our friendship anniversary?"Eva let out a sigh, carefully keeping her expression neutral. "I'm so sorry Sam, I'll make it up to you. I promise.” “Oh, you will.” Samantha said with a devilish smile spreading on her lips.“Uhm…excuse me?” “We are having dinner together tomorrow night to celebrate. And it's on you.” Samantha purred. Eva froze. “Dinner? Tomorrow? Uhm…“Don't you dare try to make up an excuse. Samantha narrowed her eyes. Eva laughed softly. “Chill, I was just thinking of the best venue.” Samantha smiled. “leave that to me. You just have to be there with your credit card. I'll text you the address.” Sh

"You really plan on staying in your pajamas all day?" Shawn's voice came down the hall as he entered the living room, briefcase in hand.Eva sat cross-legged on the couch, knees supporting a slightly tilted-over sketchpad. She looked up startled-she hadn't heard him come in. "I said I wasn't feeling great," she rapidly said, her voice defensive.“You don't look sick," Shawn said, one eyebrow shooting upward as he swept a look over the neat stack of sketches beside her and the soft glowing laptop on the coffee table. "And this doesn't exactly look like resting to me.""It's work," Eva returned succinctly. "I can work from home."Shawn gave a deep, public sigh as he dropped his briefcase onto the chair beside him. "Eva, I know you are upset about the dog. It is okay to take a day to grieve, but don't let it affect you too much.” Eva's body straightened. He thinks this is about the imaginary dog? She gestured in a forced nod to keep her gaze from him. "It's been a lot. I just needed tim

Eva's palms were slick as she approached the office door. The heavy oak loomed larger than normal, it seemed to know what was beyond it. She did stop for a second to steady her breathing. She could do this. Had to do it, too. She hauled a last in-draft of breath, grasped the cool doorknob and stepped inside."Well, if isn't the woman of the hour," Samantha said, kicking back in Eva's chair and crossing her legs, a smug smile spreading across her face. "Took you long enough."Eva came into the room, forcing herself to be calm as she shut the door behind her. "Samantha," she said, the even tone of her voice masked the racing of her heart- "why are you in my office?"Samantha nodded to the chair opposite her. "Why don't you take a seat? We have to have a little talk."Eva was defiant, but somehow swayed across, her heels clomping against the hardwood floor. "I have a busy day today. Whatever it is that you may need, let's just get on with it." She sat down rigid, her back straight and in

"Seriously, did you have to keep doing this?" Eva's voice was tight as she glanced out of the car window, her eyes darting a little nervously.Shawn chuckled and adjusted the cuffs of his fitted suit. "What, too handsome for a personal chauffeur?" He winked, and Eva rolled her eyes."No, I can actually manage on my own," she muttered sharper than she actually meant.Shawn's brow arched, and his smile fell. "You're being weird this morning. What's wrong?"Eva forced herself to laugh it off. "Nothing. Just…stressed over work. I've got a board meeting to attend.”Shawn leaned over and wrapped his hand around hers in a soft squeeze. "You got this. And if not, I'll storm the boardroom myself."She forced a smile, wanting to believe him. As they pulled into the lot, her stomach twisted, and she spotted Samantha leaning against her car, arms across her chest, eyes finding theirs the second they stepped into the lot.Eva's heart went into free fall. Why is she here?"Who's that?" Shawn said,

Eva, come upstairs for a moment," Shawn said from their bedroom; his voice was warm yet laced with excitement. Eva sat up, her fingers clenching on her phone, wherein she had been staring to catch another message from Samantha, nothing so far, it's been a week since she approved that fake report for her. She hasn't made any demands since then, not that she wanted her to, but the silence was itching, the tension just seemed to smother her. She was hedging from response with firm and even, light tones that sounded calm. "What is happening?" she finally said, laying the phone down and rising from the couch. "Just come," he said in light firm tones. The stairs felt heavy as she rose up them, each riser heavier than the last. Surprises were the last thing she wanted at this moment. She could not afford surprises. She entered the bedroom where Shawn stood beside the bed with a huge white box in front of him. He looked excited, his face wearing a genuine smile that sent her heart a
